Why Did You Wear That: Work in Progress

By |August 2nd, 2013|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

kirsten smithWhen I first came to New York, it was a very different place.  I spent the summer as an intern at Escada, living in a sublet studio apartment on West 49th Street.  Other than sleeping and going to work, I didn’t spend much time in that neighborhood known as Hell’s Kitchen.  The majority of my first Manhattan adventures happened right where I live today.   Back when the Meatpacking District lived up to its illustrious moniker, we stepped over pools of blood and hunks of meat in our stilettos before making it to our final destination.  During that time, before Buddha Bar moved in and skyrocketed the rent, our friends and designers had their studios on Little West 12th Street, which is where more than many of our New York City nights began.  We’d drink and dance and swap out our Midwestern garb for the stylings of our fashionable friends.  When the clock struck midnight, we didn’t head home like Cinderella.  That’s when our evening began.  This was the era when rubbing elbows with an Olsen and sitting down to rest your feet only to find Roberto Cavalli seated beside you was commonplace.  Unlike LA, no one here bothered to bat an eyelash. Why Did You Wear That: One Piece of Advice

By |June 11th, 2013|Why Did You Wear That?|

Often times, a one piece bathing suit is something that conjures up nostalgic thoughts of Annette Funicello the Big Kahuna, and well, the Golden Girls.  But the one piece has come a long way, baby.  Once the modest uniform of the swim team, the one piece has become sometimes sexier than your skimpiest of itsy bitsy bikinis.  With plunging v-necks, racy cutouts, and all but there backs, there is a one piece to enhance and disguise just about any figure.  So, whether you are simply parading poolside before a sunset swim (because the only downside of a singular suit is the tan lines) or you happen to be hiding a trouble spot, a one piece bathing suit is a must for every beach bound babe this summer.

Styling Tip: a one piece bathing suit doubles as a super chic body suit with jeans or denim shorts and heels for post pool dinner and dancing.

Why Did You Wear That: Hats Off

By |March 5th, 2013|Why Did You Wear That?|

spring 2013 trend baseball hatIt’s happened to the best of us, the alarm goes off and you push snooze one too many times.  A can’t be missed last minute invite arrives.  You’ve got a lot of shhh to do and not a lot of time to do it.  Your hair is a real problem and a trip to Dry Bar just isn’t in your immediate future.  Fortunately for you, there’s a very stylish new way to cover up the grease that you’ve amassed on your scalp.  Enter the street style favorite of the season, the baseball cap.  You know the “hat trick” is one of my favorite dirty hairy disguises and finally there’s a fun new way to wear one.

Forget t-ball and cleats, the look is actually quite feminine when paired with skinny jeans or trousers and a semi tailored top.  Whether worn with heels, boots, or designer sneakers, remember to offset the tomboy tone with ladylike makeup, bouncy curls, and a pretty purse.  Who said fashion couldn’t be functional?

Why Did You Wear That: Right on Top of That, Rose.

By |November 21st, 2012|Why Did You Wear That?|

peach roseMuch like fabrics go in and out of vogue (corduroy, velvet, flannel), so do precious metals.  There was a time when one might shudder to see someone wearing yellow gold and then roles reversed and sterling silver was anything but chic.  However, there is another shade of shimmer that is most flattering on all skin tones.  Yellow gold can be too warm while silver and platinum can be too cool, yet rose gold is the perfect in between shade for skin tones of plaster porcelain to dark chocolate.  I’m not sure jewelry could be more feminine than when crafted from rose gold.  I’ve even said that I’d like my next (yes, next) engagement ring to be rose gold.  Hey, nothing wrong with planning ahead (sometimes referred to as “wishful thinking”).  But until my perfect prince charming shows up on his perfect pony with a perfect piece of jewelry for my perfectly manicured ring finger, these rose gold accessories will just have to hold me over (and you too!).
