WhyDid Wisdom: Dressing for the Sexes

By |June 11th, 2009|Why Did You Wear That?, WhyDid Wisdom|

This is going to be half fashion advice, half love advice. Brace yourself, I’m not sure you’re going to love what I have to say, but sometimes, the truth hurts.

Last weekend I had the pleasure of eating at the new Hamptons eatery, Georgica. While the food was AMAZING (basically everything on the menu had truffles involved somehow), the crowd wasn’t exactly my speed.  If you’re a woman in her mid twenties to mid thirties, this is probably not the place for you. If you are a guy in your late twenties to early forties, this is your dream come true.  Seated directly to our right, was a table full of girls in their early twenties (if legal at all).  While the guys at our table (my bf included) were pretty happy about this, the women at the table weren’t as enthusiastic. A couple of the girls at their table had on some ridiculous outfits that only a 20 year old could wear (this included a skirt more like a tutu).  There was one that stood out from the group.  She was wearing something very, very simple, but very effective (in catching a male’s attention).  She had on a “Herve-like” black skirt, tight white tank top, and high heels. Someone (female) at the table asked, “Why would you wear that?”  She received a response (male) of, “Because she can.”

This is a classic example of what I have talked about before in regards to males’ and females’ perspective on what makes a good outfit. While we, as women, think that having on the latest and greatest trend makes us stand out, it’s lost on a man.  Women tend to dress for other women, which is totally fine, but don’t get upset when your boyfriend/husband checks out the woman who is dressing for men.  This is going to sound totally sexist, but if you don’t want your man eyeing the other goods, be the hottest one there.  Granted, if your man has a ridiculous wandering eye, you may want to re-evaluate your situation altogether.  I’m just saying that a “typical” male will notice another beautiful woman from time to time (don’t act like you haven’t winked a cute bartender before). I know some women who hate on the ladies who are playing up their assets yet they aren’t playing up their own. Just because you are taken, doesn’t mean you can get lazy. Keep your man on his toes and deck yourself out from time to time. Trust me on this one.

Why Did You Wear That: Lady WhyDid

By |June 9th, 2009|Celebrity Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

Okay… this is going to basically go against all that is “WhyDid”, but I can’t help it. I am gaga over Lady Gaga.  She is so beyond ridiculous that I can’t help but adore her.  She takes wearing leggings as pants one step further and wears tights as pants (that is if she wears pants at all).  You have probably jammed out to her songs like “Just Dance” and “Poker Face” out at the clubs.  Her entire album (mostly) is amazing, but that’s not why I love her.

She is a total trainwreck, but makes absolutely no excuses for it.  As a matter of fact, I bet she doesn’t even realize how absurd she is. You’re probably wondering how on earth I could possibly let her fashion felonies slide under the radar.  Well, here’s why- she isn’t trying.  She really thinks it is absolutely fine to wear a leotard out in public just like you wear your skinny jeans.  I love a woman with a strong sense of style, whether it be my taste or not.  Granted, she is a performer so she gets a little more slack, but I would still give her props if I saw her strutting down the street in Manhattan.  It takes some serious self confidence to own a pair of lace tights, a leotard and sunglasses and that’s exactly what she does- OWNS IT.  You can always tell when someone is wearing something that is totally contrived. She is trying to look “ironic” in their old concert T, neon pants, and “dirty” hair, but it’s blatantly clear it took her two hours to get ready. Find your own style, be true to you, and own it.

Why Did You Eat That: Down (South) and Dirty

By |June 3rd, 2009|Why Did You Eat That?|

I have been completely MIA and I’m sorry.  I was on a “down south” road trip with my bf.  We flew from Laguardia to Norfolk, Virginia and then drove two more hours to Waves, North Carolina.  The whole purpose of our trip was for my bf to practice his kitesurfing (which is a post all in itself- and it’s coming soon).  Anyway, we stayed at this beautiful “retreat” down there.  Unfortunately, the wind during that week blew- or actually it wasn’t blowing.  We did some exploring while there. We headed to Nag’s Head and Cape Hatteras to see the lighthouses (which we also have a theory on) and we took the ferry over to Ocracoke (the man in the picture above was also on the ferry with us).  You can’t kite surf with no wind, so we decided to head south and explore some more.

Next stop- Charleston, SC. I remembered touring the College of Charleston when I was eighteen, but I didn’t remember how beautiful it really is.  We stayed in a gorgeous hotel called Charleston Place (which turns out to be dog friendly- kinda would have been good to know before we were shoving our poor pooch in his bag every time we left the room). Not only is it a charming city with lots of great restaurants and bars, the people are incredibly sweet and hospitable (it was voted the Most Mannerly City eleven times).  We took a tour (I know, very parently/grandparently of us) because there is so much history and beautiful architecture. I started to regret not going to college there.  I would have made a wonderful southern belle. I really didn’t want to leave, but eventually we had to.

Some of the other highlights of Charleston included the discovery of something amazing called Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka, the oyster shooters at Pearlz, glass ceiling on the kitchen at Cypress so you can watch them prepare your meal, unbelievably good martinis at Slightly North of Broad (S.N.O.B.), the very South Beach rooftop bar at the Pavillion Hotel, the amazing tacos at Taco Boy in Folly Beach, and the amount of kitesurfers at Isle of Palms.

The last stop was Virginia Beach (it is near the airport in Norfolk). There isn’t really much to write about there except they made a great mojito at the place we stayed, the Ocean Beach Club. Then it was back to good ol’ New York City. Thankfully, the weather was nice on Monday and I didn’t go through UV withdrawal.

Guest Post: I Swear this is Real… You’re Welcome.

By |May 26th, 2009|Guest Blogger|

A dear friend of mine, “Pinky Toe”, sent me some pictures after she left the East Coast for the Left Coast. The subject line of the email was “you’re welcome.”  Pinky sends me lots of amazing things- she’s my bestie, after all, so I wasn’t really sure what I was in store for.  I was so beyond horrified by them…that I needed to know two things: 1) where the hell did she find these people?, 2) Why oh WHY was she around such specimens?

I would have written the commentary myself, but her response was so beyond brilliant, that I figured I couldn’t have possibly worded it better myself:

“the first two atrocities were spotted at an Academy Awards After-Party at the Beverly Hills hotel… a classy venue that you may recognize from the film “troop Beverly hills”.  These women were executing one of my favorite combinations to photograph; Arrogance, coupled with ignorance.  They both pranced, and posed and were so confident in their offensive outfits, that i had no choice but to help them make fools of themselves.
The last girl is a poor unfortunate soul that i came across at an east side dive bar called “little joy”.  The kind of place where you’d like to wipe the rim before enjoying your drink… so please tell me why she’s rocking the worlds most offensive…
muu-muu.  If you have a boxy frame, low boobs and a flat ass, God help me to understand why you wear a shapeless dress like this.  the Jill Zarin Haircut and Gold Steve madden sandals dont help either.  The poor thing told me who made the dress (i want to say Catherine Malandrino or some other big name European designer) but i was so blinded by the ugly, that my ears regurgitated the information.xo”

I’m sure after reading her explanation, you can’t help but understand why I consider her one of my very best friends. Not just anyone can convince women to give them front and back “head to toes” and then write such witty and poignant follow up.

Not Suitable.

By |May 22nd, 2009|Somethin for the fellas|

I would say 95% of women are suckers for men in suits.  That’s why after reading an article in the NY Times, I was crushed. Basically, it says that the days of men looking dapper (and delicious) in well tailored suits are over.  We kind of knew this was happening after the whole “dot com” era when men took to wearing outfits that looked like Blockbuster Video uniforms (khakis and blue button down ring a bell?).  I’m not sure who told them that was a good idea, but it wasn’t. Not sexy.  It is frumpy. It’s the male equivalent to women wearing cargo pants and a t-shirt. Get my drift?

You see, men were able to get away with the Blockbuster uniform when companies were desperate for the talent. You could basically bring your dog to work and drink a beer as long as you were there. Now we are in a completely different place.  People need to start dressing and acting like they are grateful to still be employed (which I have said before).  The NY Times article points out that, surprisingly, men are the people who are still shopping in this tough economy.  I’m afraid they aren’t shopping for the right items, however. If you look at the slideshow of suggested outfits for the “new suit” you will see that these are completely ridiculous alternatives to the suit. Not only are they inappropriate for the workplace, they aren’t really “suited” (pun not initially intended- but let’s go with it) for a straight man. I just don’t think a heterosexual man could pull these looks off. Leave them to the fabulous and already stylish men of Chelsea.

I was relieved to see this young man on the train shortly after reading this article.   I know it’s not the clearest photo (via my Blackberry), but he was wearing a well fitted grey pinstripe suit, white collared shirt, skinny grey and pink tie, and the cherry on top- Ray Ban Wayfarers.  See, you can still be young and cool in a suit.

Bottom line- forget what you heard.  The suit still rules. I mean, if nothing else, chicks still dig a man in a suit. The economy may blow, but that doesn’t mean your love life should.
