Growing up, I always loved to feed the ducks at Wheeling Park. My animal obsession clearly began at an early age. I gave up meat for several years as a kid because I realized that bacon came from pigs and at that time I was campaigning for a pot belly pig of my own. I remember this particular park was full of animals. They had a mini zoo complete with strutting peacocks. So, it was sad to return to see that you aren’t even allowed to feed the ducks anymore. Now, it’s just kind of a pond with paddle boats… hardly the magical playland that it used to be…

Why Did You Wear That: Water Under the Bridge

Even the smallest cities have a great deal of history. My hometown, Wheeling, West Virginia, is no exception. As a matter of fact, every time I turn my head, I spot another area deemed a “Historic District.” One such spectacular piece of history is the Wheeling Suspension Bridge, which spans 1,010 feet across the Ohio River. Built in 1849, it has quite literally stood the test of time.

So, rather than poo poo your place of birth, do a little research on your city’s history. You never know what interesting artifacts you may uncover.

Why Did You Wear That: Take Me Home

West Virginia tends to get a bit of a bad rap. Whenever I tell someone that I grew up/went to school there, I get the typical antiquated responses. “Are your parents cousins?” “You have nice teeth though.” “I love Virginia!” Come on, guys. Haven’t we gone over this? West Virginia isn’t all hillbillies and bare feet. The Bachelorette whisked her date to the Greenbrier in this week’s episode and as a matter of fact, it may be more Sex and the City than one might think (Sarah Jessica Parker stayed in Wheeling during the birth of her twins via surrogate).

Even when I don’t have a literal home of my own and can’t figure out where I want to be, West Virginia always feels like home to me. With its rolling hills, friendly faces, and unrivaled natural beauty (have you seen my sorority sisters), West Virginia hardly lives up to its reputation. It defies it. And I’m willing to bet if I didn’t tell you, you wouldn’t even know I was there…

Why Did You Wear That: A Stroll Down Memory Lane

Ever since I was a little girl, I always loved dressing up in my mother’s clothes. Much to her chagrin, sometimes that included climbing trees and running barefoot in the backyard. I’m lucky enough that she kept some of her favorite pieces, which also happen to be some of my favorite pieces. I’m also lucky that I didn’t ruin said pieces while playing princess of the jungle with my big brothers. One particular dress is a buttoned up crochet minidress that I once contemplated removing the lining from (glad I didn’t go through with that brilliant move). Though not all of mom’s vintage treasures are quite timeless enough to take to the the street, I think this little number could certainly turn a few modern day heads.

I may be too old for princess of the jungle and make believe, but I’ll never outgrow a good game of dress up.

Why Did You Wear That: Garage Band

I realize that there are now girls old enough to drink (legally), but not old enough to know who the hell Kurt Cobain is. That doesn’t dissuade me from wearing one of my favorite t-shirts though. I’ve had this shirt for a while now, and I”m not sure I’ll ever get rid of it. Yes, that’ll be me. The 65 year old woman wearing a cut off t-shirt in the grocery line. So? I like to pair it with the unexpected. For this rendition, I’ve topped off a sweet pair of lace shorts with my less than ladylike t-shirt. I specialize in contradictions.

We already know the 90’s grunge look is making a bit of a comeback, so now’s the time to revel in a bit of nostalgia by digging out those old concert t-shirts and making them new again. And no, ‘N Sync isn’t vintage… yet.
