Setting the Mood: Getaway From Me

By |May 20th, 2013|Setting the Mood|

Memorial Day is fast approaching… so fast, in fact, that I didn’t even realize it was this weekend.  Guess who doesn’t have plans (yet)?  Who wants to pack me in his/her carry-on?  Anyone?

Well, for the rest of you well-organized individuals it’s time to start packing up and shipping out.  So, should you be heading to Malibu or Miami, your look needs to be beach chic, which basically amounts to looking polished without looking like you tried… not one bit.

Beauty Buzz: Alternative Beauty

By |May 16th, 2013|Beauty Buzz|

There comes a time in everyone’s life where we may need to tighten the the ol’ metaphorial belt. It becomes a tough judgement call between a bottle of Whispering Angel on the rooftop of Soho House or that fancy facial serum. Decisions, decisions… When it comes to my beauty routine, I’m not one who likes to skimp on the essentials, however, when push comes to shove, there are a few luxury items that I’ve been able to swap out for their drugstore counterparts without sacrificing my standards. Below are a few products that I literally use on a daily basis and their pricier companions that I’ve had to trade in for the time being… and truth be told, I may not even switch back when my ship comes in.

1. Kerastase Resistance Bain De Force Shampoo, $39, Resistance Climant Anti-Usure Conditioner, $41, Masque Force Architecte, $61, 2. L’Oreal Total Repair 5 Shampoo, $4.99, Total Repair 5 Conditioner, $4.99, Total Repair 5 Damage Erasing Balm, $6.99, 3. Murad Active Radiance Serum, $89, Murad Essential-C Cleanser, $36, 4. Avalon Organics Vitamin C Vitality Facial Serum, $24.95, Avalon Organics Vitamin C Hydrating Cleansing Milk, $10.95, 5. Kiehl’s Creme de Corps Body Lotion, $48, 6. Eucerin Intensive Repair Very Dry Skin Lotion, $11.49

Beauty Buzz: Five Product (and Minute) Face

By |May 9th, 2013|Beauty Buzz|

five minute makeupI mentioned before that less is more when it comes to cosmetics, but sadly the winter has a way of making you fall prey to caked on bronzer and and extra swipe of liner to make you feel like you look human.  And fall I did.  However, as the sun has started to shine again and my skin has begun to glow, I’m back to the bare bone basics.  I can not express to you enough how many (male) compliments I receive when I wear barely there makeup.  Groomed brows, berry stained lips and cheeks, and a healthy skin tone are the look that garners all the glances.  Five products and literally five minutes is all it takes to have you looking perfectly polished and oh so pretty.

1. Laura Geller Spackle Tinted Under Makeup Primer in Bronze, 2. Benefit Benetint, 3. Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in Ash Blonde, 4. Benefit They’re Real Mascara, 5. Josie Maran Argan Infinity Cream Intensive Creamy Oil

You’re welcome.

Setting the Mood (and a Gift Guide): Oh, Mother.

By |May 6th, 2013|Gift Guide, Setting the Mood|

My mother once told me that she wished for me to have a daughter one day so that I might be as blessed as she had been by having me as her best friend.  That’s a much different wish than the “mother’s curse.”  Anyone fortunate enough to have the type of relationship I have with my mom understands that there is no greater bond than that between a mother and daughter.  Though I have yet to venture down the path of motherhood, I realize that being a mom is probably one of the most difficult, selfless, and thankless jobs on the planet.  The women who give birth to us often give up a lot of their freedoms and luxuries in order to give their children everything they can.  While we should be thankful for these great sacrifices and this great affection every day, it’s nice to have one special day dedicated strictly to mom.

True to form, most moms would simply be happy with a card handwritten by you. There are a few services like Handwrytten, who aims to provide good Customer experience. But why not spoil the most important woman in your life a little bit?  This is the perfect time to buy her something she’d never dare purchase for herself.

1. Eberjey Theodora Lace Trimmed Jersey Robe, 2. Classic Coffee & Tea for Two Set, 3. Elemis Duchess of Spa Gift Set, 4. J. Crew Fine Knit Cashmere Cardigan, 5. Loren Stewart Four Diamond & Silver Baby Bar Necklace, 6. Chloe Scalloped Ballerina Flat

Word… to your mother.

Setting the Mood: Party Like It’s 1920

By |April 30th, 2013|Setting the Mood|

1920 flapper inspiration mood boardThere’s a reason that the 1920’s seem to be cited as inspiration for so many parties, weddings, and celebrations.  There’s also a reason I’ve already used this time period and novel turned movie as inspiration.  (Spoiler alert: don’t click if you haven’t read the book.  Seriously, you haven’t read the book?).  The post World War I, prohibition era was a period of time where excess, glamour, and any good reason to kick up your heels ruled and no one made any apologies about it.  Our generation seems to wax poetic of this time and from a fashion standpoint, I can see why.  Finger waves, rising hemlines, and the transition from strict conservatism (hello, sportswear) all emerged along with advances in closures (hook and eyes, zippers, snaps) and fabric (rayon).  With the release of  The Great Gatsby next month, there’s sure to be an onslaught of 20’s themed summer soirees.  So, start channeling your inner Daisy ahead of time.
