Setting the Mood: Opposite Day

By |February 20th, 2013|Setting the Mood|

black and white spring trendsThe best way to get through the next two months of below freezing temperatures is to plan ahead.  Plan vacations, plan summer shares, plan spring wardrobes… One of Spring 2013’s trends was the minimalistic and graphic use of black and white shown by everyone from Marc Jacobs to Balmain to Michael Kors.  A long time fan of bold black and white, I am happy to report that this really is one of those trends that would be hard to get wrong… (though I’m sure someone is capable of screwing it up).  You can opt for an actual black and white print or simply pair black and white separates to achieve the look that is clean, crisp, and classic.  Throw em for a loop by accessorizing the look with a red lip or bright bag.

The List Volume 2/14

By |February 14th, 2013|The List|

valentines day flightWhen I took Smitty out this morning, my lobby quite literally had transformed into a florist.  There are a lot of very lucky and loved ladies in my building.  From balloons, to roses, to exotic blooms, they were all lined up at the concierge desk.  Now, seeing as I’m totally unattached this year, and last year’s Valentine’s Day was spent flying home from Los Angeles with my ex in the midst of a heated argument over the fact that he not so much as scribbled a note on a Post-It, one might think that I would be feeling a little bitter about the day of love… but I’m not.  And neither should you.  I’ve got ten (and counting) good reasons why not:

  1. It’s Thursday night and you can do whatever you want.
  2. No shower, no problem.
  3. No need to exhaust yourself over finding an awesome and appropriate gift.
  4. No need to feign excitement over a terribly lame gift.
  5. More time to spend with all of your other single friends.
  6. I can’t tell you the last time my legs have seen a razor.
  7. You can spend the day and evening spoiling yourself, whether it be an indulgent massage or hours of terrible TV.
  8. You definitely didn’t receive any baby’s breath in your bouquet.
  9. Perfect night to spot other singles out on the town.
  10. You know you didn’t settle in exchange for not spending the day alone.

Happy Valentine’s Day, beauties.

Why Did You Wear That: Put a Ring (or Two) On It

By |February 12th, 2013|Why Did You Wear That?|

They say there is no such thing as too much of a good thing… and while that may be debatable in some instances like cologne, when it comes to jewelry, I simply must agree.  Beyonce told us, if you like, you should put a ring on it… and really, who’s going to argue with Beyonce?  So my thinking is the more you like it, the more rings you should put on it, right?  Right.  So, I have taken to stacking several rings on my right ring finger and as of late it would appear that one ring is just not enough for us, ladies.

above the knuckle ringsWe are doubling, tripling, and quadrupling the rings on our fingers from index to pinky to knuckle.  One especially popular place to put a ring is right above the knuckle in delicate bands.  Many jewelry designers are making this trend quite simple by crafting offerings with multiple pieces so you can let everyone know just how much you like it.  And by “it,” I mean you.

Why Did You Wear That: Cracking the Code

By |February 11th, 2013|Celebrity Style, Red Carpet Recap, Why Did You Wear That?|

best dressed grammys 2013 rihannaKelly Rowland in Georges Chakra, Rihanna in Azzedine Alaia, Taylor Swift in J. Mendel

Let’s play a game, shall we? As you may or may not have heard, CBS cracked down on the dress code for the Grammy’s this year. One might remember some of the outfits past that probably led up to the snoozefest that was the Grammy’s this evening. See, half of the fun of music award shows like the Grammy’s is watching the parade of circus like attire come down the red carpet. So, here’s my question: if our favorite songstresses are forbidden from showcasing their “fleshy parts,” what on Earth are they going to wear? This is where the game comes into play…

It’s called, “How Can I Show Skin in Unconventional and Semi-Inappropriate Ways?” Seems the ladies of music are not only familiar with this little extracurricular activity, but also seasoned pros. Our little vocalists found all sorts of fun ways to show skin tonight from sheer panels to sky high slits, taking our newly coined and overly lengthy named game to the next level. As a matter of fact, I’m pretty sure spotting and debating dress code violations was probably the most exciting part of the Grammy’s.

Hide and Seek:

red carpet grammys 2013Hide Chrissy Teigen in Joy Cioci, Kelly Osbourne in Paula Ka, Alicia Keys in Azzedine Alaia, Jennifer Lopez’s leg in Anthony Vaccarello

Put on Your Big Girl Pants:

Beyonce in Osman, Janelle Monae, Kaley Cuoco in Amen

On the other end of the spectrum, some of the gals seemed to take the dress code very seriously by wearing red carpet pant looks. Beyonce donned a jumpsuit taking a cue from spring’s red hot black and white trend, Janelle sported her standard suit look, and Kaley just looks like she scored a last minute invite.

Something Bad Happened:

grammys 2013 katy perry kimbra florence welchFlorence Welch in custom Givenchy, Kimbra in Jaime Lee Major, Katy Perry in Gucci

I felt compelled to place Florence and Kimbra next to each other. It’s like they are starring in some kind of mythical fairytale about a fairy princess and her pet dragon… and well, Katy Perry. Don’t tell me how it ends.

For Good Measure:

Tamia, Lila Downs, Keltie Colleen

These really just needed to be seen.

So, uh, CBS, let’s go ahead and nix next year’s dress code, okay?

Beauty Buzz: Love Me, Love Me Not

By |February 7th, 2013|Beauty Buzz|

curtis kulig love meBefore there was a Christian Louboutin next to the deli on my block (before a bag of chips cost $10), there used to be an art gallery with big glass windows.  Inside this gallery was a huge neon sign, a beacon of glowing red ligt in the night, that said, “Love Me.”  I wished so badly I had the wall space and cash to acquire this piece of art that’s basically my life’s motto.  Little did I know, this was from the same street artist who has made his mark all over New York, Los Angeles, and Tokyo with his signature, “Love Me”  campaign.  You may have seen it scribbled on everything from the side of a building to the side of a meat truck.  The man behind this beautiful mantra?  Curtis Kulig.  Not only is his message beautiful, he’s not too bad to look at, ladies.

curtis kuligBut alas, as all artists know, these bills won’t pay themselves.  His “Love Me” logo gained so much momentum that everyone from Vans to Urban Outfitters has tapped him to add a little love to their products.  And just in time for Valentine’s Day, he’s also teamed up with Smashbox, which may seem like an odd collaboration, but might be the most fitting as makeup application is actually a form of art.  These are the perfect little items to treat yourself or a friend to for Valentine’s Day and, of course, to spread a little love.
