Friday Frocks: In the Navy

By |November 4th, 2011|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

We all have a go to LBD, but have you ever thought about swapping it out for a LND (little navy dress)?  The ladies of the Navy (or the WAVES) certainly do look snazzy in the crisp color. Navy looks great with metallics, nudes, and grey and despite what you may think… Navy can even be paired with black (as shown in dress #9).

Beauty Buzz: I’m Gellin’. You Gellin’?

By |November 3rd, 2011|Beauty Buzz|

It’s no secret ’round these parts that I’m pretty obsessed with nails, nailpolish, nail designs, etc.  If I can put it on my nails, I’m probably going to (or already have) tried it.  This has a lot to do with my inability to keep anything on my nails.  My fingernails are like nailpolish teflon.  Ain’t nothing sticking to these pretty phalanges.  I tried several different types of gel manicures on several different occasions and while it had it’s advantages, I wasn’t totally impressed with the removal process and it is also so hard to find a salon that actually knows how to do it properly.  So… when I heard about Nutra Nail’s Gel Perfect at home gel manicure kit, I was already halfway out the door and on my way to Rite Aid to pick it up.

Now, here I am.  Testing out my at home gel manicure.  (Why yes, since you ask, that is Miranda and I am watching Sex and the City).  The directions are pretty explicit and may induce a mild case of anxiety, but there is no need.  There are three bottles: one of activator (step 1), one of gel color (step 2), and one of cleaner (step 3).  You apply the activator, then the gel to your first five fingers and then clean the brush.  You will then clean your brush and do the other hand.  This process is repeated and you are all done!  It’s that easy.  You will have shiny dry nails in literally 10 minutes (depending how fast you paint).

So, here’s what it amounts to.  If I was even slightly capable of coloring within the lines, this would be awesome.  If you’re anything like me, however, you’re going to struggle with keeping the gel where it is supposed to be and you’ll probably be sitting there picking at your cuticles and wishing your fine motor skills were up to snuff.  I’m hoping that with normal wear and tear of daily life, some of the cuticle mess will disappear.  If not, I’ll just tell people my two year old niece painted my nails.

I already chipped my thumb nail through airport security… I will keep you posted as to how it holds up and whether or not the No-Mess Express remover does, in fact, remove the gel without ripping off my nailbeds.

Girl Crush: Go Play a Video Game

By |November 2nd, 2011|Celebrity Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

In case you haven’t already been sucked in by her first single, Video Games, this sultry songstress is Lana del Rey.  Though there is much speculation as to whether she is a product of her management and as to where exactly she came from (she was formerly known as Lizzy Grant)- one thing is for sure: girlfriend can sing.  Her sound is like nothing else out there and her voice is utterly intoxicating.  As if her vocal chops aren’t enough, she is strikingly gorgeous with doe eyes and voluptuous lips (also much speculation on those).  Her self described style is “Gangster Nancy Sinatra.”  She sports big hair and big accessories– and in this case, bigger is definitely better.

Why Did You Wear That: Putting on the Glitz

By |November 1st, 2011|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

You know how much I love sequin shorts, but fall calls for something a little warmer… yet just as sparkly.  Lucky, lucky me (and you) they have these things called sequin leggings.  While leggings are still not pants and these particular leggings aren’t for everyday wear, these babies are pretty fantastic and sure to turn a few (hundred) heads.  I like this look as an alternative to the “woman wearing a tux” thing.  It’s also a great option for a slightly less dressy than cocktail attire, but definitely more fancy than denim.  With all the upcoming holiday parties and festivities, who doesn’t need another alternative to the LBD?

Little details like a beautiful bangle and bow tie headband complete this party approved look.   Pile hair atop your head in a top notch top knot and slick on some shiny red lipstick.  You’ll be ready to party in no time flat.  Want to recreate this look for your next social gathering?

1. American Apparel Sleeveless Crepe de Chine Button Up, $45, 2. Plan B Sequin Leggings, $93, 3. Forever21 Glossy Bow Headband, $3.80, 4. Kenneth Jay Lane Giraffe Cover Watch, $82.99, 5. Stuart Weitzman Great Neck Suede Bootie, $425

Get your shine on.

WhyDid Wisdom: Happily Ever After (Or at least for the next 72 days)

By |October 31st, 2011|WhyDid Wisdom|

This week’s WhyDid Wisdom is brought to you by the letters, D, U, and H.

So, I don’t like to talk about Kim or the rest of the Kardashian Klan because, well, they drive me KRAZY.  However, the events today leave me with no other choice.  While I saw Kim and Kris (Humphries)’s divorce coming a mile away, as I scrolled through Facebook and Twitter, it seems that some of you knuckleheads are not only surprised, but also upset.  Let me guess, you are the same folks who actually thought this three ring circus and 18 different spin off shows  were “real.”  You were really “rooting” for Kim and Kris, huh?  Well, newsflash, nothing on any of the Kardashian brand “reality” shows is real.  It’s poorly scripted TV.  They are not the Cosby’s and that is not real life.

Luckily, some of you seem to be (finally) getting the wake up call.  One such status update from someone said, “I bet this whole wedding was a PR stunt.”  Oh, wow, somebody call MENSA.  We’ve got a live one.  I’m not trying to be condescending, but come on guys, you didn’t really think this was anything more than an opportunity to trick you, advertisers, and sponsors out of time and money, did you?  Oh… you did.  That’s so sweet.  Well, sugar, face the facts.  You got played.

But don’t feel bad because you know what?  I’m not just annoyed with the American public.  This is a lesson for brands out there everywhere (cough, Vera).  Come on, you should have known better.  Affiliating yourself with something like this is not good for business.  Did you really need to sell out for something as cheap, tawdry, and contrived as a reality TV wedding?  Have some standards.

Sure, some say Kim is a “good businesswoman” but some could also say the same about Bernie Madoff.  Just because they figured out how to make money, doesn’t mean they did it the right way or with even an ounce of integrity.

Here’s the deal.  It’s okay to be pissed off about this, but not because you’re sad that there isn’t going to be another Kim and Kris Making Babies spin off.  It’s okay to be pissed that this family exploited the sacred vows of marriage to make a quick (eighteen million) bucks.  It’s okay to be pissed that NONE of that money was given to charity.  It’s okay to be pissed that our gay and lesbian friends aren’t even allowed to get married in this country.  It’s okay to be pissed that they had the audacity to have a wedding registry.  And it’s most certainly okay to be pissed that such a gauche display of wealth was televised and consumed by so many when there are families in our very own backyards who don’t have enough to pay for groceries this month.

But don’t you dare be pissed and then even think about picking up the remote to watch yet another vapid brain melting morally corrupt episode of “Blah Blah Insert Kardashian Name Here.”  Because if this didn’t teach you a lesson, then you’re just as much to blame for it as Kim.  Without you (and that pesky sex tape), she’d be nothing but a girl selling clothes in the Valley (good one, Kris).
