Friday Frocks: Thankful for Sweater Dresses

By |November 18th, 2011|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

Alright, so we are gearing up for a big week next week.  Big in terms of family, cooking, and our stomachs.  That’s right, Thanksgiving is right around the corner (ahem- next Thursday).  This holiday means many things- one of which is failing miserably at portion control.  Aunt Mimi’s pie is just too good.  While I’d rather just wear something from tent and awning, it is possible that you’ll be spending this special day with a special someone’s family… So, you’ll have to look (somewhat) presentable.  Next best thing to wrapping yourself in a duvet?  The oh so effortless sweater dress.  It’s cozy, it’s cute, and it allows for an extra piece of pie.  Wear yours with textured tights (or sweater leggings) and flat boots for a pulled together, yet totally relaxed look.

1. MAX Studio Oversize V-Neck Sweater, $148, 2. Milly Knit Ashley Stripe Sweater Dress, $295, 3. Retreat Cable Sweater Dress, $97.50, 4. Religion Jumble Sweater Dress, $136, 5. Splendid Patchwork Sweater Dress, $248, 6. J. Crew Dolman Merino Wool Blend Sweater Dress, $140, 7. Kill City Asymmetrical Sweater Dress, $84, 8. Vanessa Bruno Athe Mohair Blend Fair Isle Dress, $450, 9. Juicy Couture Embellished Cowlneck Sweater Dress, $248, 10. Rag & Bone Putney Sweater Dress, $325

Pass the stuffing, please.

Why Did You Wear That: American Woman

By |September 20th, 2011|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

During this magical time of year called fall, it becomes incredibly awkward when trying to dress yourself.  I know we are all beyond elated that Starbucks brought back the Pumpkin Spice Latte, but I’m not exactly psyched when I stare blankly into the depths of my closet trying to figure out what I can put on that will not look seasonally inappropriate (like a summer sundress hangover), but also doesn’t make me look like an overzealous fashion obsessed robot who can not wait to sport fall’s hottest trends.  This is the perfect time of year to merge some of your summer favorites with your soon to be fall staples.  Pairing a breezy chiffon dress with flat booties and a lightweight jacket is the perfect outfit that says, “Oh, what?  This ol’ thing?”

Polka dots, while a huge trend for fall, can sometimes look a little too whimsical and girly for daytime.  That’s why I like to mix things up by adding studded booties and this motorcycle jacket from American Living for jcpenney.  This very same dress can be worn with platform heels in a pop of color with a bouncy high ponytail and cherry red lips to achieve a very girly get up for cocktails with the girls (or a handsome beau).

1. American Living by jcepenney Motorcycle Jacket, $54, 2. Splendid Polka Dot Cami Dress, $108, 3. Max and Chloe Star Double Ring, $40, 4. ASOS Double Row Chain Necklace, $18.30, 5. Dolce Vita Bronco Boot, $65.97

Toughen up.

Why Did You Wear That: Two For the Price of One

By |May 10th, 2011|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

You know the sayings, “Two are better than one”, “The more the merrier”, “You can never have too much of a good thing.”  Well, for a little while there, two for one’s or “twofers” in fashion were not such great things.  You know what I’m talking about… the collared shirts with the vests already attached.  Thank goodness!  You can save yourself the trouble of thinking that one through! Phew!

It wasn’t until recently that twofers were allowed out from the time out corner and welcomed back into our closets.  The maxi skirt is huge for spring and summer and luckily, the geniuses who thought up this trend (um, hello unshaven legs and skirt equivalent of leggings) also threw in a little bonus by making these maxi skirts convertible.  Meaning that the skirt can also be pulled up to your chest, belted, and worn as a dress.  Some of you little wizards were probably already doing this on your own, but the cat’s outta the bag and it’s going mainstream.  Check out how to wear your new skirt/dress… shall we call it a “skress”?

I love a maxi skirt slung low on the hips with slightly wedged sandals and a cropped tee or tank.  It gives an easy, breezy, summer look perfect for a farmer’s market or outdoor festival without making you look like a total skank.  Remember, a little bit of skin is good.  A whole lot of skin is how you end up sixteen and pregnant.

To dress up your skress, hike that baby up to cover your mammaries, add a belt to cinch your waist and throw on strappy sandals to complete the look.  Another brilliant reason to own a skress? Packing purposes.  You’ve got one piece of clothing that works as two separate outfits giving you extra room in your suitcase for those sky high espadrilles and another teeny bikini.

1. C & C California Short Sleeve Cropped Hi Low Tee, $58, 2. Splendid Heather Maxi Tube Skirt/Dress, $88, 3. Elie Tahari Snake Printed Leather Strappy Wedge Sandals, $268, 4. Splendid Heather Maxi Tube Skirt/Dress, $88, 5. B-Low the Belt Eashan Belt, $115, 6. Miu Miu Multi Strap Suede Sandals, $595

Two never looked so good.

Why Did You Eat That: Malibu Brunch

By |November 8th, 2010|Los Angeles, Why Did You Eat That?|

A couple of Sunday’s ago, I spent the day exactly how every Sunday should always be spent: with a Bloody Mary overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Le fiance wanted to take me somewhere to celebrate a month of engagement and Gladstone’s Malibu couldn’t have been a more perfect choice. The weather was perfect, so the drive to Malibu alone, was pleasant, but after valeting, our view only got better.

We were seated at a table outside overlooking the sand and the surf. There is an indoor section, though, I’m not sure why you’d bother… Our waitress asked if we were visiting, so I assume this must be a bit of a tourist stop, but I can’t imagine a local Angeleno not taking advantage of this beautiful locale. Anyway, we immediately ordered two Bloody Mary’s, clam chowder, and crab cakes. Each of which was more delicious than the next. They also brought us a monstrous hunk of fresh sourdough bread. Quite honestly, we didn’t really need to bother ordering anymore food, but like true gluttons, we ordered the fried fish sandwich (I’d pass) and the spiced crusted tuna (a must).

We certainly over ordered, but everything was delicious… and being stuffed is the perfect time for a sun nap on the beach…
