WhyDid Wisdom: Body Modification, Body Dysmorphia. Tomato, To-mah-to.

By |April 14th, 2011|WhyDid Wisdom|

Oh, why hello there.  Sorry, suburbia has sucked me in like a black hole and as much as I’m sure you’ve enjoyed staring at my mug for the last two days, I’m back.  With lots of content and lots to say.  Speaking of faces- what the heck has Lady Gaga done to hers?

It appears Ms. Gaga has had some filler treatment done by contacting the best cosmetic surgeon for fillers in melbourne.  While this is concerning to many (it’s actually hard for me to look at), she insists that it’s totally normal.  In an interview with Harpers Bazaar, she explains that her “horns” have always been there and claims she was- you guessed it – born this way.  It just so happens these puppies are just sprouting out now.

Also in the interview, Lady Gaga proclaimed she has never, nor would she ever, get plastic surgery, insisting that it promotes insecurity.  Um?  I don’t even know how to respond to that.  While I appreciate Lady’s encouragement to young people who are trying to find themselves, I think it is hypocritical for almost anyone in Hollywood or show business to start pointing fingers or talking morals.  When have you ever seen a photo of Gaga in a pair of sweats with a bare face and a ponytail?  I get it.  Her costumes, makeup, and theatrics are all a part of her “marketing” but isn’t hiding behind a facade kind of insecure?  She is constantly playing a character.  She is well spoken, but her answers are calculated.  I hardly call that “being yourself.”  She’s incredibly devoted to her fans, but wouldn’t showing them the “real” Gaga help them connect to her even more?

In regards to plastic surgery, I tend to agree it would be done by professinoal plastic surgeons.  Too much snipping, tweaking, and tucking is never a good thing.  However, this all goes back to the impossibly high beauty standards of the “celebrity.”  Young girls everywhere see photos of perfectly retouched models, movies with women who make a living off of their looks, and pop stars who are manufactured to be practically perfect.  How in the world could they ever live up to that?  No one bothers to show them the behind the scenes footage or the raw photos.

Are any of us really “born this way” or are we all hiding behind some type of facade?

Monday Mashup: A Case of Mistaken Identity

By |April 4th, 2011|Monday Mashup|

While in the checkout line the other day, my fiance asked me, “Babe, who is that?” while pointing at the cover of a glossy tabloid.  I looked over my shoulder quickly and answered, “Jessica Alba.”

I looked again at the headline and was baffled.  What wedding?  Only then did I notice that it was not, in fact, the lovely Jessica Alba.  I stared harder.

But, of course.  It was the tabloid queen, Kim Kardashian.  I had never thought that Kim and Jessica looked alike, however, this magazine cover was like looking at Jess’s twin sister.  This got me to thinking about a couple of things.  One being that Hollywood and the magazines who love it are spending far too much time in post production fixing up photos.  The other is the sad amount of cosmetic procedures taking place every single day.  Not only (but mainly) in La La Land, but all over the country.  Why is it that everyone is trying to look like some sort of predetermined perfect mold of a woman?  When did having a little bit of facial character become such a bad thing?  Isn’t there anything to be said for having your own “look”?  What’s the point of being famous if you’re being mistaken for someone else?

I think the moral of the story here, kids, is to love the way you look and emphasize your differences rather than try and hide them.

Beauty Buzz: Is Nothing Real?

MADONNA-PHOTOSHOP

The other day a Clean and Clear commercial came on and the girls on there looked so fresh and pretty. I remember looking at their bouncy, beautiful locks and thinking, “Dang, I wish my hair was that thick!” Then I caught and reminded myself that there was no need to be jeal. Their hair was not even real!! Hair extensions can make all the difference in the world and ANYONE’s hair could look like that with the right stylist.

When I see these beautiful girls on TV with perfect hair, skin, faces, bodies, I worry about girls in this country. That’s a lot of pressure to try and live up to. I don’t think that most girls realize that half (okay more than half) of what they are seeing on TV isn’t real! There are so many things going on behind the scenes that you would never even know (and these go far beyond the old Vaseline on your teeth trick).

  • Hair extensions- Basically every single girl on television or in the movies has some form of hair enhancement. Whether it be Great Lengths or good ol’ clip ins, there are secrets in her hair.
  • Makeup- You would not BELIEVE what can be done with the use of clever makeup tricks. Blemishes are banished, cheekbones created, eyes widened. You may sit down in the makeup chair as one person and leave as another.
  • Photoshop- Just in case they didn’t quite catch something in makeup, the fine folks over in editing will fix you right up. I once saw a photoshpped picture of myself and wanted to cry. I was now aware of all my flaws and wanted to fix them ASAP so I could look like the girl in that photo.
  • Surgery- Some may go under the knife while others just opt for injectables, but you can be pretty sure that most of Hollywood has had some type of work done. They deny, deny, deny and that bums me out because it’s giving girls a false sense of reality.
  • Crazy diets and workouts- Celebs don’t just look that great by eating cheeseburgers. They have the BEST trainers and nutritionists on the planet, and this is for loosing weight and for weight gain, but you can try the best legal steroids for bulking and get the body you want! If that doesn’t work, don’t forget about body sculpting makeup tricks and photoshop!

Britney_Spears_Candies_1So next time you turn on the TV or pass the rack of glossy magazine covers on your way to the checkout line, don’t feel bad about yourself. You too could look like these lovely ladies with the right beauty and fitness arsenal. I have been lucky enough to live in places where I can see the behind the scenes shenanigans and it breaks my heart to think that girls across the country (and world) hold themselves to such high (unrealistic) standards. None of it’s real! Next thing you know they’re gonna tell me The Hills is fake. Wait… what?
