Setting the Mood: The Days of Our Lives

By |December 2nd, 2013|Setting the Mood|

whydid blogThis week’s theme is going to be a little something called evolution.  And, no, not evolution in the Darwinian way because my father would disown me and besides, it’s much more romantic to believe we were specifically created rather than spawned from algae turned angiosperms.  What I’m talking about is the day to day changes that shape, create, and formulate the special little creatures who have become and who we will be.  I couldn’t have imagined what my day would be like one year ago, and I certainly couldn’t imagine what I would be doing right this moment five years ago when I started WhyDid.com (formerly WhyDidYouWearThat.com).  The way I dress today, let alone, the woman I am, is not something I could have predicted, but for better or worse it is exactly who I am- and for that I’m thankful.

Setting the Mood: Life in Plastic

By |November 11th, 2013|Setting the Mood|

In a world full of fakes, who needs any more plastic than what’s already out there?  There are very few things made of plastic that I can honestly endorse: Barbies, credit cards, Legos, and breasts.  Interestingly enough, it would appear that many designers have revisited this once shunned material in the form of accessories and outerwear.  This time around, wearing plastic and PVC look more sophisticated than the run of the mill Missy Elliot music video.  To add sheen to an otherwise casual outfit opt for plastic rather than pearls.

Setting the Mood: Sugar and Spice

leather and laceOn more than one occasion I’ve been called a paradox; a walking contradiction.  At first glance you may think you could quickly delegate me to one box, but after a conversation and cocktail, you may be moving me to another.  And just when you think you’ve got me figured out, look out for that curve ball because it’s coming.

I don’t like predictability and following the herd makes me more than uncomfortable.  I think there’s much to be said for mixing things up and keeping people guessing, especially when getting dressed.  This is precisely why leather and lace are the perfect complement to one another.  While lace could be overly feminine or somewhat sexy, leather is tough enough to tip the scales from prissy to powerful.  A head to toe leather look would have you reminiscent of catwoman and all over lace could land you somewhere between a Victorian and 80’s Madonna.  However, when the two are combined, the look is lethal.

Setting the Mood: The Haunting

By |October 28th, 2013|Setting the Mood|

halloween mood board fashionHalloween doesn’t have to be all about shimmying into synthetic fabric and trips to Ricky’s for costumes in a plastic bags.  Rather than looking frightening or freaky, you could spend the night looking fashionable.  An evening that’s meant to be about fantasy, this is your moment to beckon your inner seductress or that glamorous goth.  While there is a (very) fine line between sexy and skanky, selecting streamlined pieces sans tulle, glitter, and excessive sequins will have you riding the high road instead of gallivanting in the gutter.  Accessories with a bit of sparkle will add an extra bit of intrigue to any witchy woman.

Setting the Mood: Smells Like Teen Spirit, Again.

90s grunge styleThe 90’s: a decade I can get behind.  Rather than leaving us with treasures like bad perms. legwarmers, and the hair bands of the 80’s, this decade was the cooler, more rebellious little sister.   I always wondered why anyone wanted to purposely look like an asshole by throwing an 80’s theme party.  Some things are meant to be left in the past.  Like your ex’s and that one school photo when you had braces and DIY bangs.

The 90’s left the legacies of grunge, garage bands and fashion trends worth repeating.  Combat boots, babydoll dresses, and anything plaid are 90’s style essentials (not to mention some of this fall’s must haves).  Unkempt hair, porcelain skin, and a deep wine pout are the beauty staples to complete your trip back in time.  Bonus points for being able to borrow your boo’s blouse.  Your flannel, is my flannel, honey.  Hello, androgyny.  Recall CkOne?  Who didn’t love My So Called Life and who can forget the queen of grunge, Ms. Courtney Love?  Starting to see why sometimes history is worth repeating?
