Setting the Mood: Runway Runaround

Last Thursday officially marked the beginning of New York Fashion Week although I think brands and PR firms have sneakily stretched one grueling week into two seeing as my Fashion Week began last Tuesday with a party for Fohr Card on the rooftop of the James Hotel and an amazing panel discussion with Zac Posen. From that point forward, it’s been game on. Friends who are not involved in the industry and even those who are have vowed to reunite after the madness has died down next week. As much excitement, beauty, and straight up style Fashion Week brings with it, there’s an equal and opposite amount of stress, snarkiness, and showboating involved. I’ve come to a place in my life and career where I both love and loathe these two times a year (February and September) nearly as much as my annual trip to those shiny silver stirrups, which I think I adequately verbalized last season.

It can be downright infuriating, dealing with the crowds, the egos, and the newbies who haven’t been alive long enough to understand the underlying purpose of the week, but it is a necessary evil and actually being a part of it is truly humbling. Much like all things that are American these days, Fashion Week has become commercialized and almost a social media safari as to who can capture what picture from what show first and from the best angle. It’s a virtual pissing contest that can leave some victorious and others vexed. However, just when I’m about to roll my eyes and begin to grumble as I traipse through Lincoln Center cursing myself for wearing those shoes, I am reminded that at one point in time I was just a little girl from West Virginia playing dress up in her mom’s clothes. Setting the Mood: Fifty Shades of White

It is upon us. The bone chilling, dark at 3pm, hibernation inducing months of winter. And while the delicately falling snowflakes sure do make for a beautiful backdrop (until the garbage trucks and foot traffic destroy the pristine piles of snow turning them into straight slush), it can be easy to want to just wrap yourself up in the all black uniform of winter. However, in the past couple of years and this one most noticeably, the once faux pas after Labor Day white accessories have become the “it” girl’s go to for breaking up a mostly dark ensemble. Do winter white from head to toe, or just accent your head and toes with white accessories. But remember, we’re channeling a soft snowflake, not the abominable snowman.

Why Did You Wear That: Drab to Fab

Believe it or not some people don’t like to wear sequin covered disco ball-esque dresses. I know. I could hardly wrap my head around it either. I’m somewhat of a magpie and I will use any and all excuses to deck myself, my home, my dog out in anything shiny. Whether it be a shimmering chandelier or sparkly mini, I’m on it. However, in the off chance that you don’t love a sparkly get up as much as me (or the rest of the world), there are some other options to bring a little bling to your standard LBD. It can be as subtle as a glittery manicure or as bold as bejeweled headband. Adding just a hint of shine will take you from wet blanket to woohoo!

Why Did You Wear That: Come On Ride The Train

Never would I have imagined that I’d be a “commuter” at any given point in my life. I remember scoffing at the folks who took the LIRR (Long Island Railroad) into work everyday in New York. The only thing I’d ever used the LIRR for was to attend a baseball game (I think?) or to escape an especially creepy Hamptons House. So, to be one of the “commuters” now is a bit of an adjustment for me, but as I’ve mentioned… my life is a whole lot different than it was a year ago. I chose a backyard and awesome house over the glitz and convenience of a city. Besides… there is only one real city in the U.S.

While working from home does have its perks (Golden Girls marathons, dog on lap, wine for lunch), it had the following effects on me:

My brain was starting to atrophy from lack of stimulation.
I had nothing to complain about on “the list.”
I had not bothered to straighten my hair or apply makeup for over a month.
My nickname became “Rapunzel.”
I was like an anxious puppy when my fiance returned home and our sleep schedules were no longer in sync.

That is why I took an incredible job opportunity when it presented itself to me. That and mama likes nice things. So, yes, this is what has been taking my precious time away from you. I spend my mornings and evenings on the Caltrain. While this does give me lots of time to write and just be quiet, it also gives me lots of people watching. People are weird. I’ve seen people straighten their hair, clip their fingernails, and take their dogs into the restrooms on the train. Why don’t I just drive you ask? Because I lived in New York for the last five years. I don’t like to drive.

In Northern California, it feels like it is perpetually spring. Not the sunny warm bird chirping can’t wait to put on these sandals spring. I’m talking about the phew the snow just melted but there’s still always a chill in the air spring. Therefore, even when it’s sunny, it’s still always a little bit cold. Layering is a necessary skill for survival here and a transitional wardrobe is a must. Quite honestly, all of this seems unfair to me. My mom has better weather in West Virginia right now… I want my money back.

Friday Frocks: Yeah Baby!

It’s no secret that the runways have been channeling the swinging seventies and we’ve seen that flares are making a re-emergence. With spring just around the corner, what better way to get into the spirit than with a flowy patterned frock? I’m not talking about fembots and shooting bullets out of your brassiere. I’m talking about flowing fabrics in psychedelic prints.
