Why Did You Wear That: Wake Me Up When It’s Over

As you are probably well aware, tonight marked the 84th Annual Academy Awards.  I tuned in a little late and then had to verify with my girlfriends that it wasn’t my tear swollen eyeballs or my many mimosas that left me (yet again) feeling totally underwhelmed and… yawn… bored with what was on the red carpet.  They assured me that, yes, everyone was playing it safe and leaving quite a bit of “wow” factor left to be desired.  Meryl Streep and Stacy Keebler both sparkled in gold and both took home a handsome man of her own (one being an Oscar…) making them the winners of the night in my book.  Perhaps all of Hollywood’s starlets and stylists need to hit the “reset” button because right now, it seems like it all has been done before.  I figured the ladies had been warming up all award season for “the Superbowl of fashion” but they too seem to have slipped into a slump.

It took me a while, but I’ve picked my top contenders.

And with every red carpet, there is always a trend, whether good or bad, that prevails.  This evening’s was that of the more modest covered arm.  Everyone from Louise Roe to Melissa McCarthy was seen sporting this modern day Mormon style.  What?  Nobody got a Shake Weight for Christmas?  I want to like JLo’s and Berenice’s versions, but as for the rest… I think it’s a bit too demure… almost pilgrim like.  This is Hollywood, not Plymouth Rock.

Now this is where I’d normally present you with my worst dressed, but there was nothing even offensive enough to showcase here.  And it’s enough to bring on the waterworks again cause that’s my favorite part.  C’MON, ladies!!  Being unable to highlight the truly trifling just proves my point: it’s time to start taking some risks.  Better luck next year.

Why Did You Wear That: No Grey Area

By |February 14th, 2012|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

black and white wallFor those who don’t know me, it may seem strange that my favorite colors are black and white (since black and white aren’t technically considered “colors”).  Much like I try to live my life, I also like my palette to be very black and white.  I do love color very much, but there is something so crisp, so clean, and so refreshing about bold black and white patterns.  Whether it be stripes, dots, florals, geometric shapes, or just something totally abstract, I can’t get enough of these opposite shades.  From my clothing, to our home decor, black and white rule my world.  The best part of using black and white as your base?  The ability to punch it up with just about any color as an accent.

He is my best accessory afterall.  Want to incorporate some black and white into your life?  Here are several options of how to do just that:

Gift Guide: A Rated G Valentine’s Day

beauty and the best rated gCupid and I hate to be pests, but there is no stopping the calendar.  February 14th is on it’s way and whether or not you are choosing to ignore it, time marches on with or without you, my friend.  Maybe you’ve just started dating someone potentially special (but how can one really be sure?) or perhaps you just want to trade gifts with girlfriends instead.  Whatever your Valentine’s Day is shaping up to be, there are some very sweet options so as not to appear completely crazy in love (or creepy).  Nothing worse than going all in without the slightest bit of reciprocity.  Awkward.

Why Did You Wear That: A Sneaking Suspicion

By |January 31st, 2012|Celebrity Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

Maybe you aren’t the ballet flat type of gal, but your tired feet need a bit of a vacation from the daily torture and masochism of skyscraper stilettos.  No longer for athletes and hip hop moguls alone, the designer sneaker is having a major moment right now.  So rather than the dainty flats you’re used to, you can now slip into something more comfortable that is actually stylish (and they’re not Uggs).  I’m also not talking about white sneakers and tights like those of the commuting professional.  That will never be okay with me.  These chic designer sneaks are the answer to your poor aching feet and they are sure to thank you for it… maybe not your wallet, but definitely your feet.

1. Lanvin Diamond Print Canvas and Leather High Top Sneakers, $775, 2. Miu Miu Anthracite Glitter Studded Cap Toe Hi Top Sneakers, $396, 3. Isabel Marant Betty Leather and Suede Sneakers, $680, 4. Converse Leather Sequin High Tops, $90, 5. Nike Dunk High Casual Shoes, $81.99, 6. Pierre Hardy Metallic Leather High Top Sneakers, $650, 7. DSQUARED2 High Top Sneakers, $348, 8. Miu Miu Patent Leather High Top Sneakers, $495, 9. Christian Louboutin Louis Jeweled Sneaker, $2,395, 10. Giuseppe Zanotti Studded Metallic Leather Sneakers, $850

Monday Mashup: Give Me Some Lip

By |January 16th, 2012|Monday Mashup, Red Carpet Recap|

Natalie Portman in custom Lanvin, Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace

Okay, let me just start off by saying that both Natalie and Angelina are two of the most beautiful women on the planet (let alone the red carpet), so this is, by no means, a personal attack or me “being a hater.” That said, I really disliked both of their gowns at last night’s Golden Globe Awards. While they both wore different colors, and slightly different necklines, they both had a little lip of red on their gowns. To me, these both look like bad Valentine’s Day cards, or perhaps boxes of cheap drugstore chocolates. Natalie is beyond petite and this dress is just too much for her tiny frame. I also love the mixing of pink and red (as shown here), but in this instance, it just does not work.

Speaking of tiny, Angelina has never looked more thin (not a compliment). I do not care for the matchy matchy or her “lip,” lips, bag, (and I assume shoes). To me, this dress does not look modern at all. It reminds me of something Aunt Gertrude once wore to a country club social. I applaud her for stepping out of her comfort zone, but hope that she does not get too comfortable in this zone either.

While my opinion is probably not popular with some of you (weird)… I hope at least a few of you are in agreement. So, I’m wondering, whose “lip” do you love?

Kiss off.
