Friday Frocks: Jump At the Chance

By |July 18th, 2014|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

jumping jumpsuit whydidTechnically not a frocks… because, well, they’re not dresses, jumpsuits are panted versions of the maxi dress.  A jumpsuit can be both casual and comfortable as well as silky and sleek.  Whether you opt for uptown or down, just fair warning: it’s going to be a struggle in the bathroom.  Allow for extra time and be prepared for angry, full bladdered women to anxiously sigh while repeatedly interrupting your bathroom break with angry knocks as you try to free yourself from straps, belts, and other accoutrements.  That aside, jumpsuits are kind of like wearing very stylish onesie pajamas out in public without attracting public scrutiny, plus you don’t need to bother shaving.  Jump at the chance to wear one this weekend.

Why Did You Wear That: Pajama Jam

By |May 28th, 2014|Why Did You Wear That?|

pajamas kirsten smithThough I rarely sleep with much on once the weather breaks from freezing, I have an overabundance of sleepwear.  As a matter of fact, for someone who would rather sleep with her window open for fresh air and sweat than turn on her air conditioner, it seems a bit excessive for the lack of closet and drawer space of New York studio apartments. Well Many times I used bridal pajamas for sleeping comfortably. Despite living in what is essentially a large hotel room, my apartment has become a bit of a hangout, probably due to its convenient location to trouble.  Upon entry everyone always comments on the number of rompers and nighties that hang from the doorknobs of my closet… which aren’t there merely for show, but because I’ve got a bit of a textile overpopulation problem. It just so happens that they look nice and add a little bit of color and femininity to my black and white abode.  My pajamas are mostly seen by my girlfriends who catch me between showering and dressing for the day, delivery men, and my neighbors across the street who have seen more than their fair share of me.  But alas, with summer weekend getaways and shared spaces, it’s probably best to have something to sleep in more modest than your birthday suit and slightly sweeter than your old ratty college t-shirt and pair of boxers that came from who knows where.

Friday Frocks (Except Not): One for the Money

By |June 14th, 2013|Friday Frocks|

Speaking of one pieces… this week let’s ditch the frocks for something less formal.  While a onesie can still be dressed up for a night out on the town, sometimes a gal needs a little coverage of the crotchal region.  Maybe you’ll be tackling the new Citi Bikes, or perhaps there are high kicks in your future, in any case, a little bit of modesty goes a long way.  What better way than in a jumpsuit or romper?  (Answer: there is no better way).

Setting the Mood: Jonesing for January

By |January 7th, 2013|Setting the Mood|

january snowFor some of you, the party is over.  For others (ahem, yours truly) the party is just beginning… and you’re obviously invited.  But in case you can’t make it, I understand that January can be a bit bleak, what with the blizzards and below freezing temperatures.  It might be quite tempting to barricade yourself inside until the nightmare that is Valentine’s Day passes.  In the off chance that you’re looking to be a functioning part of society and perhaps secure a date for V-day, it might be necessary to self medicate in the form of shiny accessories, a heavenly scent, and the perfect shade of red lipstick.  Hey, just because I have plans to drown in a pint of Haagen Dazs with How To Lose a Guy in Ten Days’ credits rolling doesn’t mean you have to.

Setting the Mood: A Life Wrapped in Cashmere

By |November 28th, 2011|Setting the Mood|

I may be what some call a “snob” when it comes to knitwear.  You can thank Henri Bendel for that.  You see, I had the pleasure of working in the product development/buying department of their private label knitwear.  While, they sell silk and merino wool sweaters as well, there really is nothing quite like the soft sumptuous hand of cashmere.  Once I’d gotten my hands on it, there was no turning back for me.  I’m not sure if anyone has ever said it before but I will gladly be the first to say, “If it’s not cashmere, I can’t be bothered.”  After experiencing all that is cashmere, I couldn’t imagine wanting to wear anything else.  Bendel’s, quite famous for their cashmere, spun this fine fiber into the likes of pajamas, pillows, blankets, slippers- you name it, it was cashmere.  They have since downsized, but I kind of feel like a life wrapped in cashmere is how the good Lord intended it.
