Why Did You Wear That: Emmy’s Red Carpet- Taste the Rainbow

emmys red carpet 2013Sofia Vergara in Vera Wang, Anna Faris in Monique Lhuillier, Allison Janney in Lorena Sarbu, Zooey Deschanel in J. Mendel

Once it was confirmed that I was, in fact, watching the Emmy’s red carpet arrivals and not a live feed of the Beverly Hills High junior prom, I sat back, sipped some wine, and started taking notes.  At first I thought that purple was the hue that ruled the evening, but after collecting all of the red carpet arrival photos, I realized that the only pattern I was seeing was randomness.  From deep wine to all shades of green, the red carpet was more like a fashion rainbow.  I always appreciate diversity and was glad to not see the same ol’ same, but it seemed as if nobody quite got their look complete.  Example: for once, I finally liked the Prada Lena Dunham chose to wear, but her eye makeup massacre made it null and void.  Julianne Hough’s hair was to die for, but she seemed to forget her pants in J. Mendel.  Claire Danes’ Armani was ethereal, but her helmet hair was anything but.  Rose Byrne looked sleek and chic in Calvin Klein, while Julie Bowen looked like an extra from a country western saloon photoshoot in Zac Posen.  Michelle Dockery knocked it out of the park in Prada and Connie Britton’s Naeem Khan had me wishing I was just knocked out.  While not straying far from their norm, Sofia Vergara in Vera Wang and Christina Hendricks in Christian Siriano wore what works for them and worked the red carpet and their best assets.  My takeaway?  Much like the assorted shades of silk, chiffon, and sequins, this year’s Emmy’s ensembles were a mixed bag… and I apparently need to watch more TV.

Why Did You Wear That: Don’t Be a SAG

Style Stars:

best dressed sag awards 2013Amanda Seyfried in Zac Posen, Anne Hathaway in Giambattista Valli, Jennifer Lawrence in Christian Dior

Judging by tonight’s Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG), I don’t watch enough TV… or at least I’m not watching the right TV shows… because I didn’t know who half of the people walking the red carpet were.  One would have thought that could have been easily cleared up by simply tuning into the red carpet pre-show interviews, but the opposite was true.  Somehow, E! left me ever more befuddled than before by presenting the most awkward interviews and time spent talking about dubstep, juggling, and making it rain.  This is probably the only time I’ve been left wondering, “Where’s Seacrest?”  While scouting for the night’s best dressed was more like a game of “Where’s Waldo?” watching the b-roll footage, I managed to identify the evening’s style stars, style stalls, and overall trends.

It’s clear that winners wear blue and while navy may not officially be the new black (which was still incredibly strong), it was the color that ruled the crimson carpet.  If you weren’t black and blue, you might have shimmered in metallics and if you were looking to punch things up, pink was the go to hue.

Blue Belles:

Pink Ladies:

Style Stalls:

Oh, I feel some of your salty stares right now, but I stand firm on my worst dressed choices.  It all (mostly) comes down to one simple thing: fit.  While Jessica Chastain proves a redhead can wear red on the red carpet, she looked more Jessica Rabbit than sexy starlet and unfortunately, that includes wearing a dress that is two sizes too small.  Remember, my friends, “wrinkles point to the problem areas.”  It pained me to include Julianne Moore because, to me, she is a classic beauty and remember she was one of my best dressed at the Golden Globes?  This slinky black and white Chanel, just skims a little too low– now I know these are the SAG awards, but the top of this dress simply makes her look, ahem, saggy.  As for Morena?  Two words: swamp thing.

Below, some SAG accredited starlets prove that black is not always a safe choice and not all trends need be followed.

Why Did You Wear That: Better Late Than Never

emmys 2012 red carpetMy computer clearly didn’t want my opinion on this year’s Emmy Awards Red Carpet, but I don’t believe for one minute that you guys didn’t.  Afterall, my two cents is more like a million bucks.  So, here we go.  Above are my four favorites from the evening, while below, well…

emmys red carpet 2012So, some curtains, a banana, a gingerbread man, and a mermaid walk into a bar.  Okay, I’ve got nothing, but wouldn’t that have made a great joke?  If you’ve got one, please do share.  While all of these ladies are quite lovely, their red carpet garb was anything but.  I just can’t understand how Emmy nominated actresses can’t afford full length mirrors… or a competent stylist.

And the winner is…

Why Did You Wear That: Work It, Girl

While some ladies may be those of leisure, others work hard for their money.  They’re smart, determined, dedicated, and want to look damn good while dominating a board room.  And while mama does work hard to bring home the bacon, she doesn’t want to put all that money right back into her work wardrobe.  So what’s a girl to do?  Shop smart!  There are plenty of work appropriate options that 1). won’t break the bank and, 2). won’t raise any eyebrows.  The key to a fabulous work wardrobe is investing in smart separates that can be mixed, matched, and accessorized to provide a plethora of early morning options.  Here are three outfits all under $200 that will have you looking like (and making) a million.

Let’s break down the numbers:

BB Dakota Audry Twill Dress, $79.99 Mossimo Palma Pumps, $29.99 + Marc by Marc Jacobs Metallics Packables Shopper, $58 = $167.98

Jack by BB Dakota Nadine Top, $52 My Favorite Things Pencil Skirt, $79.90 + Nine West Escher Pumps, $59.99 = $191.98

BB Dakota Hadley Pants, $59.99 Staring at Stars Chiffon Button Down Shirt, $24.99 + DV by Dolce Vita Boston Pumps, $72.99 = $157.97

Now that’s what I call retail math.

Monday Mashup: Red Carpet Repeat
Written by: WhyDid | Monday Mashup

So, before I announce who I found fantastic and who made me cry “foul!”, I decided to recap the rest of the red carpet from the Golden Globes.  Um… I can’t help but notice… there were a lot of duplications in the wardrobe department.  Whoops! Perhaps the stylists in Hollywood need to communicate more.  Having a twin on the red carpet might be every starlet’s worst nightmare, but seeing double gives us much more to compare come Monday.  While I have my own opinions on who rocked the look best, I’m going to go ahead and let you- my usually fashionably elite- readers decide. Now, behold the beauties that were the Golden Globes:

A Case of the Ex:

Sandra Bullock in Jenny Packham vs. Scarlett Johansson in Elie Saab

Moody Nudes:

Carrie Underwood in Badgley Mischka vs. Dianna Agron in J. Mendel

Pretty in Pink:

Lea Michele in Oscar de la Renta vs. Megan Fox in Armani Prive

Is White Right?

Jennifer Love Hewitt in Romona Keveza vs. Jennifer Lopez in Zuhair Murad

Mean Green:

Angelina Jolie in Versace vs. Mila Kunis in Vera Wang

Well Red:

January Jones in Versace vs. Sofia Vegara in Vera Wang

It’s a Sherbert:

Emma Stone in Calvin Klein Collection vs. Claire Danes also in Calvin Klein Collection

Blue for You:

Mandy Moore in Monique Lhuillier vs. Jenna Ushkowitz in Rebecca Taylor vs. Amy Adams in Marchesa
