Look for Less: Sweater Weather

By |November 20th, 2011|Look for Less, Why Did You Wear That?|

Have we come to terms with this weather yet?  Or are you one of those folks who wears a parka with flip flops?  C’mon.  Don’t do that to me.  Put away your cut off shorts, and let’s get those sweaters out of their Space Bags.  You should not be hanging your sweaters, after all.  Once upon a time, I had a pretty sweet gig working on product development for private label knitwear, so I know my yarns.  Whether you opt for merino or cashmere, it’s cold out there and the best way to bundle up is in a cozy sweater.  Check out how some of Hollywood’s cutest stars are wearing the warm and fuzzies:

1. Wyatt Heather Grey Thermal Cashmere Sweater, $159, 2. Madewell Utility Zip Pants, $19.99, 3. Marc by Marc Jacobs Metal Aviators, $98, 4. Berge Mistral Hobo, $320, 5. Nine West Transport Motorcycle Boots, $129

1. Splendid Chunky Ombre Stitch Poncho, $248, 2. 7 for All Mankind A Pocket Flare, $113, 3. Kate Spade This Is the Year Idiom Bangle, $58, 4. Milly Allie Tote, $465, 5. Sam Edelman Wilma Wedge Bootie, $130

Friday Frocks: Thankful for Sweater Dresses

By |November 18th, 2011|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

Alright, so we are gearing up for a big week next week.  Big in terms of family, cooking, and our stomachs.  That’s right, Thanksgiving is right around the corner (ahem- next Thursday).  This holiday means many things- one of which is failing miserably at portion control.  Aunt Mimi’s pie is just too good.  While I’d rather just wear something from tent and awning, it is possible that you’ll be spending this special day with a special someone’s family… So, you’ll have to look (somewhat) presentable.  Next best thing to wrapping yourself in a duvet?  The oh so effortless sweater dress.  It’s cozy, it’s cute, and it allows for an extra piece of pie.  Wear yours with textured tights (or sweater leggings) and flat boots for a pulled together, yet totally relaxed look.

1. MAX Studio Oversize V-Neck Sweater, $148, 2. Milly Knit Ashley Stripe Sweater Dress, $295, 3. Retreat Cable Sweater Dress, $97.50, 4. Religion Jumble Sweater Dress, $136, 5. Splendid Patchwork Sweater Dress, $248, 6. J. Crew Dolman Merino Wool Blend Sweater Dress, $140, 7. Kill City Asymmetrical Sweater Dress, $84, 8. Vanessa Bruno Athe Mohair Blend Fair Isle Dress, $450, 9. Juicy Couture Embellished Cowlneck Sweater Dress, $248, 10. Rag & Bone Putney Sweater Dress, $325

Pass the stuffing, please.

Look for Less: School Girl Chic

By |October 23rd, 2011|Look for Less, Why Did You Wear That?|

While school started back in September, seems like some celebs are still channeling their inner schoolgirls.  I have no complaints with this look.  I quite enjoyed wearing a school uniform and looking at these nods to prep school style can’t help but make me smile.  Incorporating knits, plaids, and pleats will you give you this same very scholarly look… perfect for fall.

1. J. Crew Puff Sleeve Popover, $79.50, 2. AnnaritaN. Mini Skirt, $115, 3. Foot Traffic Cable Knit Over the Knee Socks, $9, 4. Betsey Johnson Daynaa Wedge Booties, $129.99

1. Express Shaker Knit Dolman Sweater, $39.50, 2. BCBGeneration French Grey Animal Print Skirt, $83, 3. Forever 21 Layered Opaque Necklace, $8.80, 4. Steve Madden Lace Tote Bag, $68.60, 5. Steven by Steve Madden Pembrook Bootie, $129

Why Did You Wear That: Pick of the Patch

By |October 18th, 2011|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

As mentioned, this past weekend, we made the trek to Half Moon Bay for their annual pumpkin festival.  We considered pulling a U-turn looking down the hill at the bumper to bumper traffic,  but hung in there, because really… going to a pumpkin festival is the right thing to do, right?  Maybe not.  This promised pumpkin fest wasn’t quite the vision I’d conjured up in my head while sitting in two hours of traffic.  But with all things in life, you must take the bad and learn from it.  So, here are a few things I learned:

  1. I’m not really a “festival” type of girl.
  2. They’ll charge you four times as much for a pumpkin in the “country” as you’d pay for it at Safeway.
  3. I do love a good petting zoo and still want that pony I yearned for as a little girl.
  4. And I still remember all the words to Kenny Chesney’s She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy (you can take the girl out of West Virginia…).

Luckily, on the road to (and from) the festival, there were several roadside stands with their own pumpkin patches (and petting zoos), where we stopped.  It probably would’ve been prudent to have just gone to the pumpkin patches in the first place and skipped the festival altogether.  Again, we live and we learn. At least I was dressed for the occasion.  Without fail, it is always 15+ degrees colder near the beach in Northern California… and always grey (way to go marine layer).  Wearing a transitional chiffon dress with a cashmere grandfather cardigan was the perfect way to look pumpkin picking chic.  Paired with flat lace up boots and tote, those pumpkins didn’t stand a chance.  Had my tote been any bigger, you bet your ass I would have smuggled a potbelly pig home.

 1. J. Crew Maisie Floral Print Silk Chiffon Dress, $395, 2. C by Bloomingdale’s Cashmere Grandfather Cardigan, $118.50, 3. Seychelles Jungle Lace-Up Short Boot, $165, 4. Rebecca Minkoff Dear Tote Bag, $330

In the end, we opted not to pay the $20 they were charging for a subpar pumpkin.

Look for Less: Leather Weather

By |October 2nd, 2011|Look for Less, Why Did You Wear That?|

So maybe you’re not the “skin”tight leather dress kinda girl.  That’s okay, cause you can still incorporate leather into your life in a more casual, less Catwoman way.  From Paris to LA, celebrities have been seen sporting their second skins all over town.  While the look is undoubtedly sexy, it can be expensive.  You can check this out blog for the best leather history related blog.  That’s why there are some great faux leather (or “vegan” as we’re calling it now- tomato, tomato) options out there.  This is one time when it’s okay to fake the funk.

1. Rachel Zoe Bianca Sequin Top, $275, 2. Top Shop Faux Leather Skinny Trousers, $66, 3. MICHAEL Michael Kors Sloan Oversized Clutch, $248, 4. Blu Bijoux Gold Tear Drop Multi Strand Earrings, $46, 5. La Fenice Eden Suede Platform Booties, $175

1. J. Crew Burnout Linen T-Shirt, $35, 2. Express (Minus the) Leather Seamed Mini Skirt, $59.90, 3. Forever21 Oval Sunglasses, $5.80, 4. Top Shop Mixed Fabric Chain Bag, $56, 5. Ash Hidden Platform Leather Pump, $195

1. Vince Hi Lo Sweater, $159.99, 2. Karl Lagerfeld for Impulse Skinny Faux Leather Pants, $99, 3. Cara Leather and Metal Cuff, $31.90, 4. Kelsi Dagger Teya Studded Platform Pumps, $149

P.S. Might I point out that both pairs of  “leather” pants on here are not leggings.  Please do not go strutting around town in pleather leggings without a top long enough to cover your v-dot.
