Why Did You Wear That: Toot It and Boot It

By |October 16th, 2012|Why Did You Wear That?|

women in boots

You know what I like almost as much as cashmere sweaters, puppies, and unicorns?  Boots!  A great pair of boots (or twenty) makes winter and the impending arctic ice storms (almost) bearable.  In addition to the standard short black bootie, knee high boots, and riding boots, there are four trend heavy boots I’ve picked up on for this fall…and you should too.  Toss one (or two, or three, or four) of these styles into your regularly scheduled program to kick things up a bit (had to).

Friday Frocks: I Can Love You Sweater.

By |October 5th, 2012|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

oversize sweaterBy now, it should be clear how I feel about knitwear.  Cardigans, pullovers, hats, and gloves.  My favorite piece of knitwear, however, is the sweater dress.  By far one of the most versatile pieces of the autumnal season, it can be worn alone with a great pair of boots, with tights when the brisk breeze turns to a crisp chill, and over leggings when the snow plows start to rumble through the streets.  A slouchy, soft sweaterdress is the equivalent of an oversized boyfriend shirt.  It’s comfortable, easy, and altogether chic.  It also has the overwhelming effect of making you look completely cuddly and I cannot be held responsible if handsome strangers have the overwhelming urge to hug you when wearing one.

Ain’t nothin’ better than a dress that’s also a sweater.

Beauty Buzz: Stay Put

By |October 4th, 2012|Beauty Buzz|

kiss on a napkinLast week I went ahead and decided to take some of my own advice (for once) by taking fall’s big beauty trend, wine lips, for a test drive.  I spent a solid twenty minutes perusing my local Sephora (complete with live DJ) looking for the perfect shade of wine lipstick for my pout.  I went from Buxom to YSL to NARS… There’s gotta be a better way than testing on the back of my hand, right?  Anyway, fifteen shades later and I decided on one from Makeup Forever

wine lipstickOh, whoops.  Shall we just say that shade #13 (Purple) was not exactly the look I had been going for?  I know I joke that my new darker locks are a bit goth, but it’s a bit early for Halloween.  There was no way in the world I was going to head out on the town looking like Marilyn Manson.  So, I attempted to wipe off my less than beautiful mistake.   Ruh roh.  This lip lacquer wasn’t budging.  It took a couple of makeup wipes and a pinch of patience before I was able to get this goop gone.

24 hour lip color

Makeup Forever  Aqua Rouge, $24

Had this shade been one that worked for me, I would have been ecstatic.  Finally a product that does what it says.  I’m telling you, this lipstick would have made it through a six course dinner, serious makeout sesh, or an entire evening of karaoke.  So, let’s just call it a happy accident.  I may have gotten the wrong shade, but I certainly will be swapping it out for a more flattering lipcolor sure to last me through the evening… and maybe even til morning.

WhyDid or WhyDon’t?: Cut the Cord…

By |October 3rd, 2012|Why Did or Why Don't?|

corduroy bearWhen I think about corduroy, typically Birkenstocks and granola bars come to mind.  It’s been a while since corduroy has been en vogue (though that hasn’t stopped the fine folks of Northern California), but it would seem this fall, the textured textile has made its way back into top boutiques and fashion forward brands fall offerings.

And while wide wale cords sound anything but appealing, I’ve gotta admit… this season’s versions have really grown on me.  In slim cuts and updated colors they look more modern than those of our American Eagle wide legged past.  And what’s better than finally being able to combine fashion and function when the fahrenheit starts to dip?

corduroy pants1. Blank Denim Corduroy Leggings, $88, 2. Forever 21 Skinny Corduroy Pants, $19.80, 3. BDG Twig High-Rise Corduroy Pant, $59, 4. J Brand 511 Mid-Rise Corduroy Skinny Jeans, $175, 5. Current/Elliot Zip Stiletto Corduroy Pants, $255, 6. Gap 1969 Legging Cords, $59.95, 7. Rag & Bone The Skinny Mid-Rise Corduroy Jeans, $175, 8. By Zoe Riri Corduroy Pants, $201, 9. 7 for All Mankind Luxe Corduroy Skinny Jeans, $178, 10. Citizens of Humanity Avedon Luxury Corduroy, $198

So what’s your take on the reinvention of corduroy for fall?

Would You Wednesday: Like Fine Wine

By |September 12th, 2012|Beauty Buzz, Why Did or Why Don't?|

wine lips fall 2012Red lips have reigned supreme for the last few seasons, but this fall, crimson goes a bit goth.  Fire engine red gets a bit deeper and takes on the tone of dark berries and plum wine.  Not only are apparel and accessories in the shade of fermented grapes going to be all the rage for fall, but makeup trends follow suit.  From lips to fingertips, it seems we’ll be opting for shades of deep red and burgundy.

like fine wineEllis Faas Creamy Lips in Deep Plum Wine, $35, Too Faced La Creme in Divine Wine, $21, NARS Pure Matte Lipstick in Volga, $25, Sue Devitt Balanced Matte Lipstick in Australian Bight, $20, Sunday Riley Modern Lip Color in Wine Stain, $32

It would appear celebrities and fashion addicts alike have already taken to this trend, but will you be swapping out cherry for grape?

And yes, as a matter of fact, I am drinking a glass of red while I write.  For inspiration purposes, of course.
