Red Carpet Recap: I’ve Got the Golden Ticket

Nope, that’s not the second coming of the polar vortex. It’s just hell freezing over because for the first time in a long time, I thought most all of Hollywood’s leading ladies looked nothing short of lovely on this evening’s red carpet in party dresses for the 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards. I wasn’t sure if it was the bubbles from the prosecco getting to my head, or if all of Hollywood had decided to take things more seriously, from their attire to their acceptance speeches. Perhaps it was the absence of teenagers and excessive twerking- in any case, I wasn’t about to complain. Seeing limo after limo from Boston corporate coach arrive depositing a well dressed, well coiffed beauty, I knew my job dissecting the night’s fashion was going to be tough.

And then Sandra Bullock showed up looking like a flamenco dancer.

Followed by Paula Patton as a butterfly struggling to shed her cocoon.

And before all of humanity starts sharpening their pencils (and knives) to write me hate mail, I was most excited to see what America’s current sweetheart, Jennifer Lawrence, would be wearing. I was less than impressed when she made her unfashionably late entrance in the predicted Dior. My dad likened her to a barrel, but I’m thinking she looked more like that awful game women are forced to play at bridal showers wherein they create wedding gowns out of toilet paper.

Her anticlimactic arrival could only be topped by that of America’s original sweetheart, Julia Roberts, who must be a method actor with a movie starring her as a Dolce & Gabbana wearing schoolmarm.  Her conestoga could not be located though.

But again, it wasn’t all bad. Red in all shades from tomato to garnet was by far the color most favored though Emma Watson’s version was the equivalent of a fashion mullet. There was also a lot of embellished black and elegant metallics. And we all know Jared Leto was the real belle of the ball.  Perhaps I’ve reached a new level of zen or have been in California for far too long, but I did not feel like dismantling the TV for the first time while watching an awards show.

Leaves me feeling like 2014 may be looking up. For now.

Why Did You Wear That: Nightie Night

By |November 27th, 2012|Why Did You Wear That?|

chemises and babydollsAlong with spritzing myself with a bit of perfume before bed, I also enjoy a good nightie.  No, I don’t mean a nightcap, although I do enjoy those too.  I am talking about a good ol’ fashion nightgown.  Maybe not the style that the Golden Girls don- but now that you mention it, I love those too- I’m just talking about a simple chemise in satin, silk, chiffon, or the softest cotton. Yes, it’s true.  I’m a lady.

Sure, in the 90’s we all did the whole “boxer shorts” or Soffe cheer shorts thing, but I never could get down with the women who ended up wearing giant flannels or nasty t-shirts and ratty old boxers.  Girlfriend, take a little pride in your night attire.  If your man wanted to go to bed with his pal, Larry, he would… and in that case, Larry would know better than to wear that stained USC shirt to bed with his boo.  I get the irony: this is all very hilarious coming from a lady who sleeps alone, but I stand firm.

Over the years I’ve amassed quite the collection of nighties and knickers.  So many that the ones that did not fit inside my closet (yes, there are more) are hanging “decoratively” on my closet door handles.  I know what you’re thinking… “How is this girl single?!”  No?  That wasn’t what you were thinking.  Hm… Anyway, it’s true, I don’t get invited to too many sleepovers anymore.  No more pillow fights or Truth or Dare for me, but I always am sure to be wearing my boudoir best ’cause you never know who you might meet in your dreams.

Friday Frocks: Flirty Frocks

By |February 10th, 2012|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

nightgown

The flirtiest frock a girl can own is the type that isn’t meant for the public to see.  As a matter of fact, it doesn’t matter if anyone ever sees it as long as she feels good when she’s wearing it.  It’s the prettiest, dantiest, most feminine frock in her closet and whether she does her dishes in it or finds herself showing it off, she’ll feel like the most beautiful woman alive.

Why Did You Wear That: Morning Glory

By |November 15th, 2011|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

Ever have one of those days where you just don’t want to get out of bed?  You’d rather just stay in your jammies and spend the day watching garbage daytime TV and taking all your meals in bed?  Oh, that’s everyday?  Yeah, me too.  Sadly, mama’s gotta pay the bills… which, of course, would require one to actually pry herself from those 1200 thread count sheets and take part in normal human behavior and social activities.  Oh well… doesn’t mean you can’t be comfortable.  As a matter of fact, I’d like to encourage you to wear your nightgown from your bedroom right on downtown.

Slip a soft sweater over your silky nightie.  Accessorize with chunky gold accessories, a pop of bright eye makeup (so you don’t still look like you’re sleeping), and work appropriate oxfords.  While it may not be the day you dreamt of, at least you will look dreamy.

Friday Frocks: Under Where?

By |February 11th, 2011|Friday Frocks|

You thought I was going to do a Friday Frocks with all kinds of red and pink dresses, didn’t you?  C’mon, give me a little credit!  Being someone who loves lingerie as much as I do, I jumped at the chance to leverage the upcoming Valentine’s holiday to highlight some sexy chemises sure to impress anyone lucky enough to lay eyes upon them.

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be all about raunchy red lingerie (I’m talking to you, Frederick’s).  A sexy chemise is much more subtle, yet just as effective in catching a special someone’s attention.  Rolling solo?  I don’t see why you shouldn’t wear one while doing the dishes or giving yourself an at home mani.  Smitty always appreciates when I do!

Top (L to R): Betsey Johnson Thorny Chiffon Babydoll, $75, La Perla Passion de Fleur Chemise, $350, Stella McCartney Clara Whispering Silk Satin Chemise, $300, La Perla Greta Chemise, $345

Bottom (L to R): Agent Provocateur Uschi Slip, $590, Only Hearts Stretch Lace Tie Back Chemise, $57, Flora Nikrooz Romantic Tiered Ruffled Chemise, $124, Body Wrap Slip Shaper, $78

Dress up to get down.
