The List Volume XC

By |November 15th, 2013|The List|

Barbie GirlThere will be certain times in your life when it’ll be okay to fake the funk or fake it til you make it, but there are other things that one should be absolutely uncompromising about. At times it may be a close judgement call, while other times the answer is blatantly obvious. Should you ever get confused, below is a list of a few hard and fast rules when it comes to fakes. (I know some of you will more than likely not catch the Aqua reference, so catch yourself up here).

barbie no makeup

  1. Fashion. Counterfeit goods aren’t just bad for the economy, but they’re just an overall bad look.
  2. A relationship. It’s always better to be alone than with someone you don’t love or who treats you poorly.
  3. Interests. Do what you like. Be who you are. If someone doesn’t like it? Eff ’em.
  4. Nails. That’s what gel manicures are for.
  5. Friends. Ain’t nobody got time for them

barbie

  1. Hair color. Change your hair, change your life.
  2. Confidence. Sometimes, once you’ve faked it a time or two, you’ll start to believe it.
  3. Your phone number. Dudes can be relentless.
  4. A tan… although it’s always more fun to earn your tanlines, your skin will thank you later.
  5. A status update. Sometimes you’ve gotta leave people wondering…

Now, I’m off for the evening…

Friday Frocks: Garden Party

By |March 9th, 2012|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

alice in wonderland tea party

I don’t care what that little groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, said.  It feels like spring outside and I’m ready to throw one heck of a garden party.  Should your teacup be full of tea or champagne… it doesn’t really matter.  Find your most floral frock and accessorize with the most gigantic hat your pretty little head can hold up and a pair of chunky heels (so as to avoid sinking into the sod).  Grab your girlfriends for a day of gabbing and grubbing… just don’t fall down the rabbit hole.

Friday Frocks: Always a Bridesmaid

By |July 8th, 2011|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

Ah, that special day in your life.  You’ve dreamt about it since you were a little girl.  You’re wearing the most beautiful dress you’ll probably ever wear and you get to marry the man of your dreams with your very best friends right by your side.

They were there when you called them with giddy excitement after your first date, wiped away your tears after your first fight, and called them immediately when he finally popped the question.  So why are you dressing them up like show ponies?

I get that this is “your day” but what did I ever do to you?  Why must I look like I’m wearing a prom dress (and a bad one at that)? Is this some kind of hazing?  Cause I’m pretty sure we covered that when I was holding your hair back as you tossed your cookies at your bachelorette party… You know, the time you made me drink out of a penis straw?

Not sure why so many brides insist on making their besties and bridesmaids look like giant eggplants or fluffy pink sheep, while they’ve never looked better.  I know, I know… it’s hard to find one dress that matches your color “theme”, looks good on everyone, and doesn’t upstage you.

A few things:

  1. These dresses are ugly.  They just are.
  2. Not every girl is going to look smashing in the exact same dress.  I don’t care how beautiful your besties are.  Some have hips, some have breasts, and unless you lucked into having quintuplets for best friends, none of them are going to look the same in that damn dress.
  3. When you ask us, “Will you ever wear this dress again?” we have no choice but to plaster on a smile and squeal with delight, “Yes!!!”
  4. We will never upstage you- unless you make us wear these god forsaken taffeta monstrosities. You’re the bride and you are beautiful!

Listen, I know you think that you must purchase official bridesmaids dresses, but there are plenty of great “off the rack” options that might actually make your bridesmaids happy.  To drive home my point, I have found options (all under $300) in every color of the rainbow:

1. Top Shop Yellow Cami Ruched Mesh Dress, $95, 2. Amanda Uprichard Crystal Body Silk Dress, $194,  3. Victoria’s Secret Flirty Multi-Way Dress, $79.50, 4. Presley Skye Ruffle Trim Crepe de Chine Dress, $128,  5. BCBGENERATION Cascading Ruffle Dress, $98, 6. A.B.S. by Allen Schwartz Yellow Silk Chiffon Beaded One Shoulder Dress, $237, 7. Ellen Tracy Sleeveless V-Neck Dress, $148,  8. Aqua Encom Twist Bandeau Full Maxi Dress, $129.29, 9. Aidan Mattox Floral Print Tiered Gown, $295, 10. Aidan Mattox Pansy Silk Chiffon Halter Dress, $279

11. Lauren by Ralph Lauren Chessington Shirred Dress, $130, 12. Ani Lee Taryn Dress, $299, 13. Free People Watercolor Printed Asymmetrical Dress, $128, 14. Mark + James Tie Waist Metallic Tulle Dress, $295,  15. Parker Bead Dress, $297, 16. Max and Cleo One Shoulder Gown, $178, 17. Amanda Uprichard Jessie Maxi Dress, $242, 18. LM by Mignon Cascade One Shoulder Gown, $243, 19. American Apparel Siren Dress, $75, 20. Winter Kate Barbel Lace Trim Maxi Gown, $285

So cut your gals a break, would ya?  You still want them by your side after your big day, right?

Why Did You Wear That: Fall in Line

By |September 1st, 2009|Why Did You Wear That?|

It seems that fall has decided to pop in a little early this year.  The temperatures have dropped and there’s that familiar chill in the air.  Luckily, I get cold when I travel so I happen to have one of my favorite Bendel’s cashmere cardis with me. Otherwise, I would be freezing and unable to leave the house.

So,this first chilly fall day has got me  compiling my fall shopping list.  I’m no Anna Wintour, but here’s my September issue.

Over the Knee Boots– whether you go for a flat or a high heeled version, they will add a sexy edge to jeans and flirty dresses.

flat otk

Pour La Victoire Malorie boot, $375

co op boot

Barney’s Co-op Over the Knee Buckle Boot, $740

Leather Jacket– if you didn’t  grab up a leather jacket for early spring, now’s the time to do so.  For fall they are a little more rocker chic and I would stick to black or perhaps a luggage color.

 joie

Joie Ailey Leather Moto Jacket, $689

Something Plaid– whether it’s a plaid shirt  or just an accessory, plaid is making a come back. Just don’t go plaid crazy. One plaid at a time.

 plaid

Forever21 Snap Button Plaid Shirt, $11.50

Leggings- Oh, leggings. You aren’t going anywhere are you?  Luckily, this season they are available in a multitude of styles.  Two stand outs are denim leggings and leather leggings.  Just PLEASE remember to cover your hoo- ha no matter what style you choose. Leggings still are NOT pants.

dvf

Diane Von Furstenberg Leggy Leather Leggings, $565

juicy

Juicy Couture Denim Legging, $88

Boyfriend Blazer– Cute alternative to a jacket on a brisk day.  Pair it with skinny pants and a pretty blouse.

aqua

Aqua Boyfriend Blazer, $88

The New LBD– the little black dress will never go out of style, but look for new details this fall. Whether it be asymmetrical details or a mesh inset this season’s LBD’s have a little more edge. Dress it up with heels, dress it down with your leather jacket and boots.

bebe

Bebe One Shoulder Mesh Dress, $48

Destroyed Denim– while I think the boyfriend jean will fade out as the temperatures drop, skinny destroyed denim will continue to remain strong.  They will look great with a sexy T and booties.

siwy

Siwy Hannah Slim Crop Jeans, $198

It may be getting cooler, but you’ll still look hot with a few of these items in your arsenal.

Why Did You Wear That: On the Fringe

By |February 26th, 2009|Why Did You Wear That?|

flapper

I can’t lie, I’m obsessed with this spring’s fringe trend.  I love it.  Maybe I was secretly a flapper/hippie in a past life.  Either way, I suggest you jump on the bandwagon and add a little fringe to your life.  Whether you go all out in a flapper-esque skirt, fringed boot, or simple fringe jewelry, there are many ways to incorporate this fun and flirty trend into your wardrobe. Here are a few ideas how: (more…)
