Why Did You Eat That: Follow the Yellow Brick Road

By |March 20th, 2011|Recipes, Why Did You Eat That?|

This past weekend we met some friends for dinner in Culver City.  We tried a place that none of us had been – to save the embarrassment it will remain nameless.  The company was great.  The food, not so much.

To try and make up for our hellacious dinner, we headed over a few blocks to the Culver Hotel to grab a drink.  I obviously had never heard of the place, but was pleased upon arrival.  It looked like an old building in Tribeca and the room where the hotel bar was located had soaring ceilings and all of the old world charm from when it opened back in 1924.  Not only is the room impressive, so is the history.  With more rumored scandal surrounding it than Lindsay Lohan, just being in the place makes you feel like a part of the legend.  Some of the stories include hidden passageways during prohibition to sneak in women and booze, housing the munchkins from the Wizard of Oz, and late night high stake poker games.  Talk about old Hollywood.

I would definitely try and avoid showing up during the “live entertainment” however.  There was live singing halfway through our visit and not only did it clear the place out, it didn’t suit the vibe of the room or the crowd.  We couldn’t wait to finish our cocktails and hit the yellow brick road.

Can’t make it to the Culver?  Sip on this:

Marilyn Monroe:

  • 1oz apple brandy
  • 4oz champagne or sparkling wine
  • 1 dash grenadine syrup
  • cherry

off to see the Wizard!

A Day of Silence: For Japan With Love

By |March 17th, 2011|WhyDid Wisdom|

Today a friend told me about something called For Japan With Love. I hadn’t heard anything about it, but as soon as I did, I was moved to take part in it.

So, rather than blog today about how obnoxious it is when people stand in the “walk” side of the escalator or why you’re stupid for staying with a cheater, I am taking a day of silence and calling you to action. We spend so much time worrying about such trivial matters in our own self obsessed lives that we never take a moment to think about others.  People who are suffering from real problems.  People who lost their lives, their homes, their loved ones.  People who lost everything.  They aren’t worried about what they are going to have for dinner.  They’re worried about where their next meal will come from.

In standard American form, we have tried to make this disaster all about us.  Yes, nuclear power is scary.  No, your yacht is not that important.  Japan doesn’t need you to design a bracelet for the victims of the earthquake.  They  need your prayers, your donations, your support.

Today, rather than worry about what you’re going to wear tonight or whether or not you should buy those new shoes, do something, anything, to help someone less fortunate.  Low on cash?  Donate clothing.  How much of that stuff shoved in the back of your closet do you really wear anyway?  Clothes I was planning to sell on Ebay, I’m donating.

Just because this problem doesn’t directly affect you, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t care.  That iPad you’re reading this on?  Parts of that came from Japan.  The Toshiba TV you’re watching the Kardashians on? Their plant has been shut down.  The camera that took these pictures?  Japan.

While you spend today helping out Japan, don’t forget that this is an ongoing process. Think about those who are less fortunate and suffering not only today, but everyday.

Why Did You Wear That: Erin Go Bra

By |March 17th, 2011|Why Did You Wear That?|

Roberto Cavalli Feather Print Jersey Push Up Bra, $240

As much as I love a good theme party, I despise themed clothing on holidays.  Sorry, I just do.  I especially despise it after the age of twelve.  Needless to say I’m not wearing green today.  Pinch me. I dare you. Anyway, I’m not a complete curmudgeon.  So, in celebration of the Irish (they’re great people afterall: potatoes, Guinness, folklore), there’s a little Irish phrase, “erin go bragh” that essentially translates into “Ireland Forever.”  I’ve gone ahead and translated it into brassieres and done a little erin go bra-ing of my own.  Because if there is one thing I do love, it’s lingerie.  This is about as festive as I’ll get.  Take what you can get, lasses.

1. La Perla Feuillage Tulle Triangle Bra, $590, 2. Eberjey Delirious Triangle Bra, $36, 3. Free People Scandalous Bandeau, $28, 4. Fleur of England Tease Front Tie Boudoir Bra, $94.80, 5. Beauty Buzz: Orange You Going to Try This?

By |March 17th, 2011|Beauty Buzz|

While red lips are here to stay, at times they can seem a little heavy for the warmer spring and summer months.  Luckily, makeup artists everywhere were painting a new shade on the lips of the models backstage at the Spring shows (shown here at Milly).  A variation on fire engine red was tangerine orange.  Whether is was glossy or matte, deep coral or soft peach, this hue showed up on runway after runway.

Just like red lipstick, orange also takes a bit of trial and error to find the perfect shade for your skin and hair.  Below are three citrus fueled shades to test out on your pretty pucker:

1. MAC Pro Longwear Lip Creme in Good To Go, $16, 2. Napoleon Perdis DeVine Goddess Lipstick in Hara, $22, 3. Makeup Forever Rouge Artist Intense #40, $19

Juicy!

Why Did You Wear That: Being Angela Bower

By |March 16th, 2011|Why Did You Wear That?|

It’s no secret how I feel about the current state of TV programming.  Reality TV shows full of Kardashians and overpaid, undereducated wannabes.  Why can’t we can some quality TV back?  Remember TGIF?  Those were the days.  One of my absolute favorite TV shows is Who’s The Boss? I fall asleep watching that and Golden Girls. Seeing as I spend so much time with Angela and co., I started to notice that Angela had some pretty serious style.

I know, you’re thinking Sam (Alyssa Milano) was the hottie on Who’s the Boss? but let’s not sell Angela short.  While you may only think of her as an uptight ad agency executive (remember when it was sexy for women to be smart?), Angela is the poster child of sportswear.  Silk blouses, oversized blazers, pops of color, jumpsuits, and turtleneck tunics are a just a few of Angela’s style staples.  Add some big hair and those large plastic frames and you too, could be running Wallace and McQuade.

1. 3.1 Phillip Lim Sequined Silk Chiffon Jumpsuit, $1,100, 2. Jill Stuart Destine Blouse with Neck Tie, $378,  3. Donna Karan Collection Cashmere Turtleneck Tunic, $995, 4. Steven Alan Renada Double Breasted Silk Blazer, $385, 5. Halston Heritage Stretch Satin Jersey Jumpsuit, $355, 6. Love Moschino Long Sleeve Sweater, $170, 7. Vintage Diane Von Furstenberg Silk Blazer, $185, 8. Wylie Eyeglasses, $35,  9. DKNY V-Neck Silk Jumpsuit, $295, 10. Jill Stuart Doreen Top, $428

Toooony!
