Red Carpet Recap: Grammy’s One on One

The 57th Annual GRAMMY Awards - Red CarpetTaylor Swift in Elie Saab, Sebastian (with dad, Wiz Khalifa)

Last night marked the 57th Annual Grammy Awards.  Everyone was there from Beyonce to Mary J. Blige.  Even Prince showed up clad in head to toe sequins to present an award along with delivering probably the most profound message of the evening, “Albums, like books and black lives, still matter.”  Taylor Swift and Kanye may have buried the hatchet, but Mr. West nearly disrupted Beck’s speech while accepting the award for Album of the Year.  He thought it belonged to Beyonce and clearly we just need to give him a seat on every voting panel to avoid further broadcast disruptions.  In any case, I’m not sure who even hosted last night’s awards, but I wasn’t really tuned into the show post red carpet arrivals.  I had pegged Ms. Swift as my favorite for the night- that is, until Wiz Khalifa’s son, Sebastian showed up.  Two of my favorites who I never thought I’d be calling elegant, were Miley Cyrus and Nicki Minaj.  Both tamed their usually outlandish looks for sleeker, more sophisticated styles.  As for the rest of the arrivals? I’ll let you be the judge as I kept having the strange sensation of deja vu.

kirsten smith valentines day baileysNewsflash: there’s a reason it’s now referred to as “Singles’ Awareness Day.”  Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and I’m not sure if you know, but I have zero to negative interest in it.  The last Valentine’s I actually remember involved breaking up on an airplane on the way back from Los Angeles.  Needless to say, I don’t really have any vested interest in celebrating it this year either.  Rather than sulk in dirty sweats (I don’t own any) and drown myself in a pool of tears, I’ve taken the initiative to use Valentine’s Day as a day to dedicate to my own health and well being.  That would include having a cocktail.  Preferably a cocktail that includes many things I like- chocolate, caramel, and bubbles.  As mentioned, I have a bit of a reputation for falling asleep standing upright, so when I was asked to put together a cocktail for Bailey’s I knew it would need a healthy dose of caffeine.  Below, get my recipe for the perfect Valentine’s Day drink, My Funny Valentine.  A libation that is both delightful and weird… much like my ideal mate.

Why Did You Wear That: American Girl in Paris, Part Deux

By |February 5th, 2015|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

kirsten smith paris why did blogErnest Hemingway, my sometimes emotional doppelganger, has been quoted as saying, “Never go on trips with anyone you do not love.”  Well, this is lesson one in WhyDid’s Guide to Paris.  Years ago, when I was dating my first boyfriend in New York and first real love as an adult, he took me away for my birthday to Puerto Vallarta.  I was nervous, but  thanks to my old dating coaches Im excited because while it’s one thing to spend time together over fancy dinners and attend occasional sleepovers at each others’ apartments, it’s another thing entirely to be bound to one another in a foreign country.  While there were some mishaps along the way, a meltdown over a missing watch, a diverted flight leading to a night spent exploring Mexico City, the experience was an overall positive one– thanks in large part to my easy going nature, and ability to keep calm in a “crisis.”  He deemed me the ultimate travel companion (I’d nominate Smitty) and from then on, I’ve had similar experiences… except for that one trip a couple of summers ago… If you want to get traveling and packaging information then contact to Absolute Back Packers website.

While being “go with the flow” has its obvious benefits, in a city like Paris, it is important to come in with a game plan or else you’ll find yourself still in the apartment past noon and wondering where all the time went by the end of the week.  Upon arriving in Paris, people spoke to me in French, which I’ll take as a compliment, until the look of disgust appeared upon their faces as I butchered the phrase, “Anglais, s’il vous plait,” while sipping my champagne and batting my lashes.  Madame Cook, my highschool French teacher is somewhere mortified.  Most people in Paris do speak English, but if you even attempt to call and make a reservation at one of the upwardly trendy restaurants, they will without fail respond with, “Booked.”  We found it easier to show up and luck our way into a table, but I can’t guarantee that would work everywhere or for everyone.  When attempting to tell someone the address of your destination, just show them on your phone because they will pretend they have no idea what you are saying. You can visit For Lorn Britain for the best traveling tips.

In any case, during my first days wherein I was alone because I couldn’t be bothered booking a flight that wasn’t direct, I wandered the streets of the 7th arrondisment, where we were staying, and as luck would have it, a Parisian friend from New York, happened to be on his way to the city of lights.  He picked me up one evening and we went to the Park Hyatt, which is allegedly a celebrity favorite, for a drink and to catch up.  He was surprised to see the place so empty, and when another friend of his, a model, of course, who lives full time in Paris arrived, she informed us that it had been quite quiet following the Charlie Hedbo incident.  She also added that it was unusually cold for Paris.

After people watching for a while, we decided to liven things up by heading to Hotel Costes. Hotel blog gives you the information about different hotels with their facilities. Known for being a place to be seen and to bump into the beautiful people, we were surprised to find the soundtrack that evening being provided by crickets.  In hopes that it was just still a little bit early, we camped out in a corner table and had another cocktail.  Things never really picked up and true to form, I fell asleep sitting up, which I blamed on jetlag, but anyone close to me knows this is a rather common occurrence.  After toasting to my birthday, it was after midnight in Paris afterall, we decided to fold and my friend walked me home and that’s when the real adventure began.

Setting the Mood: American Girl in Paris, Part Une

If you’re following me on Instagram (and if you’re not, shame on you), you probably know that I have just arrived home from my first trip to Paris. For years I dreamt of being whisked away with the one I love to the city of lights, but once I realized taking myself was probably more likely if I wanted to make it there before I required special assistance during the airplane boarding process than waiting for the man of my dreams, I booked my ticket.  I didn’t know what to expect, though my friends who are regular travelers gave me an extensive list of what to see, do, eat, and buy, so I didn’t know what to pack.  I specifically remember speaking to my father before my departure when he said, “Well, you’re only going for a week.  You won’t need to pack much.”  Laughter ensued.  Upon checking in at the airport, I had to muster my feminine wiles to avoid an overweight baggage fee.  Fortunately, it wasn’t a very full flight.  I’ve always said that pictures will never be good enough.  Pictures may be worth a thousand words, but experiencing a city for yourself is something that can only be felt.  New York, I love you, but Paris is my mistress.

Setting the Mood: Hut, Set, Whatever.

By |January 30th, 2015|Setting the Mood|

what to wear to the superbowlAs I’ve now returned from gallivanting in the streets of Paris, I’ve been reminded that this Sunday marks the 49th annual Super Bowl.  God bless, America.  Honestly, I woke up not knowing what day it was and reaching for the champagne.  So, I guess I’ll feign interest for the next few days until I can return to giving less than zero fucks about sports.  I suppose my only weighted interest in the game should be that my spirit animal, Lenny Kravitz, will be performing with that chick who has it out for Taylor Swift.

This just in, I Googled the teams playing and it’s going to be some East Coast, West Coast/Biggie, Tupac helmet bashing between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks.  Coming from a fashion standpoint, Gisele is married to the Patriots quarterback, so that’s my pick.  Whichever team you will be (pretending) to cheer for, here are a few ways to look sporty chic for the game.
