Why Did You Wear That: Mermaids, Martinis, and MAC

By |March 13th, 2013|Why Did You Wear That?|

Last Thursday, right before the snow and my bubonic plague hit, I headed uptown to fete my favorite hostess with the mostest, Hilary Pereira of Mermaids and Martinis fame at the Fifth Avenune MAC store.  The place was packed as I can’t see any better combination: mermaids + martinis + makeup.  Guests were gifted copies of Hilary’s book and complimentary makeup touch ups.  My life was changed with the introduction of MAC’s new Mineralize Rich Lipstick in a pucker worthy plum.  Champagne and hors d’oeuvres were passed throughout the crowd by almost offensively attractive waiters, but the real treat awaited those who roamed to the back of the party- a DIY martini bar.  Typically applying makeup under the influence would be a poor decision, but fortunately for us, we had the professionals from MAC to keep us coloring inside the lines.

Fins up.

Why Did You Wear That: Hats Off

By |March 5th, 2013|Why Did You Wear That?|

spring 2013 trend baseball hatIt’s happened to the best of us, the alarm goes off and you push snooze one too many times.  A can’t be missed last minute invite arrives.  You’ve got a lot of shhh to do and not a lot of time to do it.  Your hair is a real problem and a trip to Dry Bar just isn’t in your immediate future.  Fortunately for you, there’s a very stylish new way to cover up the grease that you’ve amassed on your scalp.  Enter the street style favorite of the season, the baseball cap.  You know the “hat trick” is one of my favorite dirty hairy disguises and finally there’s a fun new way to wear one.

Forget t-ball and cleats, the look is actually quite feminine when paired with skinny jeans or trousers and a semi tailored top.  Whether worn with heels, boots, or designer sneakers, remember to offset the tomboy tone with ladylike makeup, bouncy curls, and a pretty purse.  Who said fashion couldn’t be functional?

Hats off to you.

Why Did You Wear That: Ribs + Cleavage = Ribbage

By |February 26th, 2013|Why Did You Wear That?|

spring 2013 trends crop topHow’s that New Year’s resolution going?  Good I hope since one of spring 2013’s biggest trends requires baring a bit of skin.  Oh, that’s right, ladies, get your abdominals in check, cause they will be spring (into summer)’s leading ladies.  The look already made an appearance last spring, but didn’t pick up mass momentum.  Remember how much you hated this look? (I loved it).  Well, looks like we (yes, we) are giving it another go once the frost breaks and fortunately the crop top of the season is FUPA friendly.  You see, the key to achieving the look is showing the bit of skin above your belly button and right below the ribs.  So pair a short top with a higher waisted skirt or shorts and you’ll be giving all the right kind of ribbage.  (Should you need an ab blasting workout…)

sex and the city il cantonoriCarrie Bradshaw and I have always been fans of baring our bellies and if Herve Leger has any say in it, the trend will just continue right on into to fall.  So, whattya say, ladies?

Why Did You Wear That: My Awards Show Has a First Name…

By |February 24th, 2013|Celebrity Style, Red Carpet Recap, Why Did You Wear That?|

And the Winners Are:

Stacy Kiebler in Naeem Khan, Kerry Washington in Miu Miu, Naomi Watts Armani Prive

I actually went back and forth a couple of times before finally deciding on my best dressed for this year’s Oscar Awards.  All season long, I’ve been asking the ladies of Hollywood to “bring it” and in the words of a real cinematic gem, Bring It On, “It’s already been broughten!”  So, I guess it’s safe to say that the starlets of the big screen were just keeping their heavy artillery under wraps until tonight.  Much like their careers, no one wants to peak too early.  While I did go ahead and pick my top three ensembles, there are so many more that deserve a bit of airtime.  After all, it’s just an honor to be nominated, right?  Stacy Kiebler wowed in a dress shinier than beau, George Clooney’s, beard, Kerry Washionton popped in a perfect coral red, and Naomi Watts shined in an all over sequin asymmetrical frock.  Blues were still in heavy rotation, but a new pastel trend emerged as a favorite.  Thankfully, far less black was worn than at previous award shows, but when it was, the dresses were embellished so beautifully that the gowns were anything but basic.  And as always, there was plenty of shimmer to light up the red carpet.

We all had high hopes for Jennifer Anniston’s return to the red carpet, but I was less than impressed with a lackluster version of Jennifer Lawrence’s Golden Globes gown and typical Rachel blowout.  Anne Hathaway may have won big with Le Mis, but her pink Prada was ill fitting and nearly as awkward as her red carpet interviews.  I’m not sure why Olivia Munn was even there (was Magic Mike nominated?), but she and her mess of a dress would have been better off staying at home.

White Up the Night:

Charlize Theron in Christian Dior, Zoe Saldana in Alexis Mabille, Jennifer Lawrence in Christian Dior

Why Did You Wear That: Put a Ring (or Two) On It

By |February 12th, 2013|Why Did You Wear That?|

They say there is no such thing as too much of a good thing… and while that may be debatable in some instances like cologne, when it comes to jewelry, I simply must agree.  Beyonce told us, if you like, you should put a ring on it… and really, who’s going to argue with Beyonce?  So my thinking is the more you like it, the more rings you should put on it, right?  Right.  So, I have taken to stacking several rings on my right ring finger and as of late it would appear that one ring is just not enough for us, ladies.

above the knuckle ringsWe are doubling, tripling, and quadrupling the rings on our fingers from index to pinky to knuckle.  One especially popular place to put a ring is right above the knuckle in delicate bands.  Many jewelry designers are making this trend quite simple by crafting offerings with multiple pieces so you can let everyone know just how much you like it.  And by “it,” I mean you.
