Why Did You Wear That: Chain Gang

By |February 19th, 2014|Why Did You Wear That?|

gold chainsThe saying is “less is more” but in some cases- like jewelry- without a doubt, more is more.  We’ve double decked out our fingers.  We’ve stacked our wrists.  (I still refuse to use the term “arm party” as it gives me indigestion just typing it).  And I’ve been layering delicate necklaces for quite some time, but just recently stepped up my game by piling on bulky chains in varying lengths and metals to create a look that would make even 2 Chainz envious.

Adia Kibur Link Necklace, 7. Venessa Arizaga Sunset Necklace, 8. Irene Neuwirth Diamond Collection Diamond Chain Link Necklace, 9. Gemma Redux Offset Lapis Stone Necklace, 10. Fallon Jewelry Classique Bib Necklace

So start layering ’em on because if two chains are good, four have got to be better.

Why Did You Wear That: She’s Got Legs.

legwear editorial fashionOh, hey.  It’s snowing again.  Blame that damn groundhog… or global warming.  Whomever is to blame, it’s bone chillingly cold and frustratingly difficult to get dressed each day keeping both style and thermometer in mind.  One tires of wearing only jeans and pants and our poor little frocks have been left hanging lonely in the outer realms of our closets.

A great way to add interest to a basic little black dress is with fashion legwear.  Not to mention, a wonderful way to show off those stems you’ve been keeping in shape all winter long.  Another option?  Consider layering plain black tights under some of the open work options to achieve the same look without losing the warmth.  And speaking of layering, don’t be afraid to layer over the knee options on top of tights.  Play with texture and patterns to keep things interesting until the snow melts and the sun comes out again.

Why Did You Wear That: Runway Recap- For the Fashion Weak.

By |February 17th, 2014|Why Did You Wear That?|

mercedes-benz-fashion-weekLast week, New York was transformed into a real life, live action perfume ad.  Everywhere you looked long legged, bare faced beauties skid across ice covered cobblestone streets on the way to and from castings and shows like little human Bambis.  Fashion Week in New York has changed quite a bit in the years since I first started attending shows, especially after changing venues from Bryant Park to Lincoln Center.  It seems as if the week has become less and less about the fashion and more and more about snapping photos for social media and angling to have your photo snapped for various web publications (remember, I taught you how here?).  Front rows are full of bloggers and people who are wearing bizarre getups, while many buyers are left straining to see the runway while taking notes on the collections’ line sheets.  The only places harder to get into than the actual shows are the after parties which are chocked full of celebrities, celebrity hangers on, promoters, underage models, and certainly a rapper or two.  I should probably get better at celebrity spotting because after viewing party pictures of an event I’d attended, turns out a newly single Ryan Gosling was a mere banquette and ice cube toss away.  Oops.

Factor in the Polar Vortex blizzard like conditions, and not only was it difficult garnering enough motivation to leave my heated apartment, but the actual commute uptown and other various locations was at times painful.  Every time I thought I was about to miss a show, I was reminded that by being twenty minutes late, I was actually ten minutes early.  And since I have yet to be seated front row at all shows, I always found myself sitting behind people with giant headpieces and vision obstructing hairstyles.  As if that didn’t make the task of capturing a clear image of the catwalk daunting enough, be sure that there was a knucklehead (or two) who felt the need to hold his/her iPhone midair for the entire fifteen minutes of fashion.  But because I’ve mastered multitasking and warping my body into the most advantageous shape for scoping the show, I was able to capture bits and pieces of my week.  Just remember, all my suffering is all for you.

Why Did You Wear That: One Dress, Three Ways (Rated R)

By |February 14th, 2014|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

kirsten smithThe moment the door closes behind me upon arriving home after a long day, or a late night, the clothes are immediately removed.  It’s funny that a woman who loves clothing as much as I do spends so little time in it.  So, it’s a good thing I love silky nighties and lingerie.  That’s why when I came across a dress that could combine all these things, a space was cleared in my closet for it.  A couple of years ago, celebrities like Erin Heatherton and Lea Michele made this look quite popular.   I wasn’t an early adopter, I must admit.  But when a woman works that hard for her body, she wants to show it off.  And if you’re not Lady Gaga or Beyonce, the opportunity to wear a leotard in public comes up rarely if ever.  Ta-da!  No pants, no problem. And if you are looking for a really scary look for your costume then check out these white-out contacts as they look so cool.

Friday Frocks: I’m Just a Love Machine

By |February 14th, 2014|Friday Frocks|

i need valentino

Single or taken, Valentine’s Day conveniently falls on a Friday this year and so more likely than not, you will be leaving the confines of your cozy apartment to take on the town.  So, you may as well get into the spirit of this force fed love fest.  You don’t necessarily have to sausage yourself into a spandex red dress, although I’m sure those will be aplenty.  Opt for something softer in shades of pink or go bold in a graphic print be it floral, hearts, or darling polka dots.
