Friday Frocks: Red, White, and Beautiful

By |July 4th, 2014|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

fourth of july barbecue fashionSo you’ve opted out of that flag bikini, but you are feeling festive and what better way to pledge your allegiance than a Fourth of July friendly frock?  No need to swath yourself in an American flag.  Isn’t that illegal anyhow?  (Ask Lil Wayne).  Instead of being entirely predictable and in the spirit of outfits that have longer shelf lives than summer romances, choose a dress in solid red, white, or blue, or pick a pattern combining the hues to be the biggest babe at the barbecue– potentially setting of some fireworks of your own.

Why Did You Wear That: Star Spangled

By |July 1st, 2014|Why Did You Wear That?|

how to draw a star

People often ask about your favorite color or favorite movie, but rarely does someone inquire as to what your favorite shape might be.  The obvious answer would be parallelogram or rhombus, but I’ve always been partial to stars.  Some girls love to dot their “i’s” with hearts, but I’ve never been one to do that- or to make big gaping “o’s” over them either.  I never mastered bubble letters and finally came to terms with the fact that my handwriting would always be a perfect blend between my father’s precision like engineer pen strokes and my mom’s loopy artist’s scrawl.  But that’s neither here nor there, because who actually picks up a pen these days? (me).

So, back to my favorite shape.  Aesthetically speaking, I suppose I prefer clean sharp lines, but perhaps my pension for stars is a bit more mystical.  And there very well may be a star permanently etched onto my skin- somewhere that, ironically can only be seen by the public when the sun is out.  But this is all hearsay.  In honor of my favorite shape and that holiday coming up celebrating our country’s beautiful independence, here’s some star spangled style sure to make those thirteen original colonies proud.

Why Did You Wear That: It Takes Two

By |June 29th, 2014|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

whydid blog kirstenSometimes you feel like a nut.  Sometimes you don’t.  The beauty of matching separates is that the ways in which they can be worn allow for a bit of creativity.  Of course you can wear them as they were meant to be- matching, or you can always mix things up and wear them as the name implies- separately.  Just as shown this week, a top can be dressed up, a bottom dressed down simply by remixing your basics.  And honestly, who doesn’t love a remix?  I’m talking to you, Too $hort.

This week was the beginning of the season wherein New Yorkers take to social media to remind you of how hot they are.  Remember when we swore we wouldn’t because the winter was so wretched?  Well, just like the Maury Show, the lie detector has determined… That was a lie!  As we strolled through the back streets of the Meatpacking District to snap these shots, It’s all I could do not to just melt into the puddle of sweat that I was becoming.  But alas, I do it all for you.  The irony in all of this being the beautiful vegan handbag I received from Like Dreams having been shot in the middle of the Meat Market.  Don’t worry, no animals were harmed in the production of this shoot… unless you count me and the blister on my arm from my curling iron.

Why Did You Wear That: Game, Set, Match.

By |June 25th, 2014|Why Did You Wear That?|

TennisBall.Net_As much as I like contradictions and mixing things that have absolutely no business swinging from the same monkey bars on the playground, I also love a good pair.  Separates aren’t reserved only for suiting anymore and with the surge in popularity of crop tops (thank you, fashion gods), designers have capitalized on one of this season’s biggest trends: tops with shorter silhouettes worn with long line skirts and shorts.

Not all separates may be office appropriate, but these sets sure do add an unexpected take on cocktail attire (little black what?).  And when you mix and match these separates with some closet essentials, you’ve tripled your look.  That’s my kind of retail math.  A crop top can easily be converted to casual by pairing it with your favorite jeans and heels or give a full skirt a Saturday brunch vibe while wearing it with a white t-shirt and sneakers.  (Remember my experiment in dressing down a sequin crop top?).

Why Did You Wear That: Happily Overall

By |June 20th, 2014|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

kirsten smith overalls whydidWith the return of 90’s trends, it’s felt like a reliving of my youth- not that it was that long ago or anything.  Much like mementos from first loves or pictures from the past, I have a hard time letting go of some of my clothing- in part because I know it’s going to become relevant again and also because it reminds me of particular periods of my life.  Seriously, you should see the closets at my mom’s house.  Hello, 90210.  One article of clothing I wish I’d hung onto were my overalls.  However, I was so happy at the time the trend was over that they were sent straight to Goodwill much like my Kriss Kross cassette was shuttled down the garbage shoot.

So, when these denim onesies made a surprising return (okay, not surprising since I predicted it), I was left looking for an adult pair.  Unlike other fillers (cantaloupe, carnations, baby’s breath, Juvederm, etc.), closet fillers are for trends that you like, but recognize for exactly what they are: trends.  There’s no use dropping two hundred dollars on a pair of destroyed dungarees when you know very well you won’t be wearing them next summer.  We all know summer is meant for flings anyway.  Therefore, I headed to everyone’s favorite “fast fashion” establishment, Forever 21 and scored a pair that I have no buyer’s remorse about.  (And paired them with a crop top, of course). overalls kirsten smith whydid
