Beauty Buzz: Luxury at Your Fingertips

By |October 6th, 2011|Beauty Buzz|

So, you know how much I love some good nail art.  And apparently, I’m not alone in this.  Last year, the recession proof beauty product of choice was lipstick.  This year, however, nail polish is without a doubt the girls’ go to broke ass mood boosting beauty product.  Nail polish is a great way to give your look a quick pick me up without breaking the bank.  The ring finger bling is trending and Emily over at Cupcakes and Cashmere is a freaking nail art Picasso.

So, here’s the deal, I am a devoted Sally Hansen Salon Effects fan, but today I strayed.  I tested out Incoco’s nail strips to see how they measured up. First, things first… the sample I received did not come with the orange stick or nail file that Sally Hansen’s sweet little kit includes.  That made for an inconvenient application. Also- the strips are all packaged together, so if you were planning on beating the system like Ramshackle Glam (smart lady that one), no can do.  Overall?  They are basically the exact same thing as Sally Hansen’s version.  The quality is slightly less though.  The clear plastic cover sticks to the polish rendering some pieces completely useless.  The upside?  Way more colors and patterns so you won’t have to settle for butterflies or leopard print.

Now, I did apply these babies on the Caltrain… so that may have something to do with the subpar execution.  However, I’m no amateur.  I once performed a Sally Hansen nail strip manicure on one of my besties in the backseat of a Bimmer on the way to a baby shower that came out quite flawless.  So, needless to say, I feel quite confident in my nail strip manicuring skills.  My verdict?  If you’re looking for something fancy and the your average fishnet print isn’t going to cut it– check out the array of Incoco patterns to make your phlanges pretty.

Setting the Mood: Greyscale

By |October 3rd, 2011|Setting the Mood|

It’s not true what they say.  It does rain in California.  Especially, Northern California.  Today it has rained all day.  I can’t lie though.  Rain is sometimes a welcome change.  The whole cheerful kingdom thing can get old and makes me long for a little grey weather.  A little reality.  I enjoy the rain so much that I actually waited to go for a run until it started raining.  A neighbor stopped me cause he was worried about my well being, but I let him know that I was enjoying the downpour.  I know.  How very emo/hipster of me.  There’s just something refreshing about it.  You don’t have to feel guilty about holing up for the day and indulging in a book or comfort food.  That said… let’s hope the sun comes out tomorrow.

Setting the Mood: xoxo, WhyDid

In honor of Gossip Girl’s return to television, this week’s inspiration is brought to you by the letters S and B.  Whether you’re team Serena or Team Blair, there’s no denying that these ladies have serious style.  New York is one of the most magical places during the fall.  I don’t know what exactly it is, but I think anyone who’s spent a fall in the Big Apple can attest to that special something that’s  in the air.  Now, I know Serena is taking the season off in sunny California, but I’m still channeling the sumptuous accessories that a city girl might add to her collection this fall-  the perfect shoes, scarf, and clutch for catching cabs and ducking into the hot club du jour.

Beauty Buzz: Quick Fix

By |September 22nd, 2011|Beauty Buzz|

There will come a time when even you, Miss Always Fresh As A Dasiy, will run into a little beauty bag snafu.  As a busy woman, you don’t have time for melt downs- especially those having to do with your appearance.  Luckily for you, I earned the nickname “MacGyver” at a young age when one of the straps on a girlfriend’s homecoming dress decided to boycott the dance (and her date).  I whisked her into the restroom, detached the other strap, and turned her frock into a halter.  Crisis averted- let’s dance!  From that point on, I knew I had a gift.  A gift to share with the world… or at least my closest gal pals and you lovely ladies.  Below are a few of my tried and true quick fixes that are sure to save you from sweating in a less than ideal situation.

Problem: No Eyeliner

Solution: Eyeshadow!  Use a dark shade of eyeshadow, wet a makeup brush (smaller is better), and draw on your very own liquid eyeliner.  I actually do this most of the time rather than using real eyeliner.

Problem: No mirror

Solution: iPhone!  I knew technology would come in handy for something other than Facebook stalking and What’sApp’ing!  Use the camera on your iPhone as a mirror (there is a little flip-a-roo on there that will spin the lens around).

Problem: Bra Straps showing

Solution: Safety Pin!  Okay, so if your mom didn’t buy you those “As Seen on TV” strap converters like my mom did (thanks, Mom!), the fastest way to convert your straps is with a safety pin.  You can also use a rubber band and knot it.

Problem: Horrifying pimple

Solution: Glob of Toothpaste!  Okay, so most people probably already know this- but I swear it works better than most drugstore drying agents.  Just make certain to wipe it off before answering the door or heading out. Awkward.

See, now you will start thinking about what everyday items can be used as feminine superpowers.  What are some of your favorite fast fixes? (We’ve all got a little MacGyver in us!)

Setting the Mood: Why I Autumn….

By |September 12th, 2011|Setting the Mood|

I’m really getting into the autumnal swing of things… even though fall doesn’t officially start until September 23rd this year.  If you want to get all technical, we still have another week and a half of summer left.  To me, fall symbolizes quality time spent with family and friends.  There’s nothing I like more than getting cozy with a group of friends for a rousing game night complete with warm cocktails and yummy comfort food.  This is the perfect occasion for a soft, fuzzy blouse, snuggly scarf, and killer boots.  Just because you’re staying in, doesn’t mean you have to dress down.
