Beauty Buzz: Hair Repair. 911!!

By |April 20th, 2009|Beauty Buzz|

frizz

You know I love taking vitamins and my vitamins are helpful in maintaining my long lustrous locks, but as of last week, my hair was looking mighty wonky.  I had split ends out the wazoo and my hair was feeling a bit more like straw than silk.  Emergency!!

One of my bff’s (she’s a bit of a beauty junkie and has perfect hair) told me about a new product from Paul Mitchell called Super Strong Liquid Treatment, but after searching the web and a few local hair salons, I came up empty handed.  What’s a girl to do?

I hit the local Duane Reade (which I now know is named Duane Reade because the first one ever is located on the intersection of Duane and Reade Streets in Tribeca). After looking at the $58 Kerastase conditioner, I grabbed a much cheaper version from Neutrogena at a whopping $7.98.  I figured I would probably get what I paid for… but was very pleasantly surprised.  After just one use, my ratty ends are now smooth as butta’, baby.  Phew! Crisis averted!

Beauty Buzz: Hairs to You!

By |April 1st, 2009|Beauty Buzz, Celebrity Style|

It seems that you guys really love big hair- almost as much as I do.  The day that I posted about “Bump Its” was the busiest day we’ve ever seen over here at WDYWT.  So, to thank you, here’s more big  hair:

drew

Remember when Drew Barrymore wore her hair like this to the Golden Globes? And remember how she then wore it the same way in several consecutive interviews promoting her new movie, Grey Gardens?  I’m still trying to figure this look out.  What do you think prompted her to decided that this was a good style for her?  I love big hair as much as the next gal – but really?

Here Drew is again… with more bad hair.  Do you think she has some Bump Its under there?  I just hope that she is on her way to the salon and saying, “Peace!” to her bad hair days.

Beauty Buzz: Bump Up the Volume

By |March 25th, 2009|Beauty Buzz|

Okay, so this product kills me- in a good way.  We were watching TV a few weeks ago when this commercial came on and my boyfriend said, “Babe, that’s just like you!”  I burst into laughter because he was totally right.

The product is called “Bump Its”and they are used to give you a nice big bouffant.  I didn’t realize there was really a market for this kind of product.  I honestly thought me and my bff who now lives in LA but grew up with me, were the only people on the planet who actually did this to our heads.  Now granted, I am from the south and have been sporting this look since I could use a comb, but it still cracks me up.

This is a picture from their website with the “Bump It” in place. You can get your very own “Bump Its” for $19.99 or you could always just do it the good ol fashion way- with a comb and some hairspray.

Beauty Buzz: Take Your Vitamins!

By |March 21st, 2009|Beauty Buzz|

vitamins

You’ve heard of pharmaceuticals, and you’ve most likely heard of cosmaceuticals, but the newest kid on the block is nutraceuticals.

Neutraceuticals are vitamins and supplements that are taken daily to address health issues internally.  From cancer to acne, they all have claims to help alleviate your ailments.

Brands like Perricone MD, Elemis, and Borba all have created supplements for skin and body.  Some claim to give you younger glowing skin, while others help to manage weight.  While most have not been evaluated by the FDA, they do produce results.

I’m a sucker for things like this, so I decided to start taking the Skin and Total Body Supplements from Perricone MD about a month and a half ago. My hair has grown about 8 feet (okay, an inch), my nails are stronger and people have definitely commented on how good my skin looks. These supplements aren’t cheap, but I think they are totally worth it.

Beauty Buzz: Lashing Out

By |March 19th, 2009|Beauty Buzz|

So, you’ve probably seen all of these commercials advertising the new mascaras that are supposed to be essentially “extensions” for your eyelashes.  What makes these mascaras unique is that they use microfiber formulas that create little tubes around your eyelashes in order to create volume and extra length.  Well, guess what? I’ve taken it upon myself to try a few of them out.  I tested Maybelline XXL Extensions XX-treme Length Microfiber Mascra, Loreal Double Extend Beauty Tubes Lash Extension Effect Mascara, and Revlon Lash Fantasy Total Definition Mascara.  Below are my thoughts on each:

maybelline

Maybelline was my first trial of the bunch.  I immediately liked it.  My lashes were definitely longer and thicker.  They weren’t clumpy and they still looked very, very natural.  The only downfall, was that this formula dries out quickly.  You would have to replace it frequently.  Also, the results weren’t really that dramatic. So I marched on.

revlon

Next up was Revlon’s version of miracle mascara.  Upon my first use, I was disappointed.  The brush is really weird and didn’t feel as effective during application.  The formula was much more runny that Maybelline’s.  My lashes were definitely longer, but not as thick.  They did have a tendency to clump as well.  After a few days of use, the formula thickened up a bit and I liked it better, but still was not sold on this one.

loreal1

Apparently, the third time is a charm because the last mascara I tested was from Loreal.  Hands down, this was my favorite.  It combined both things that I liked about the two previous trials.  The brush was better, the formula was in between the thick version and the runny version. With this mascara, there was an obvious difference.  My lashes were REALLY long and thick.  The only thing that might deter people or freak them out is when you wash off the mascara.  The tubes literally will come off in clumps and this can be frightening because you’re going to think they are your eyelashes, but I can promise they are not!  Trust me, I would not use mascara that made my eyelashes fall out.

These were just the “drug store” versions of these “eye lash extension” mascaras.  Fiberwig, Blinc, and Lancome all have more expensive versions available at Sephora.com. So go out and try them yourself and start batting those eyelashes at some lucky cute suitor.
