Friday Frocks: Check Me Out

By |November 21st, 2014|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

types of plaid One of the fastest ways to get dressed and stay on trend this holiday season is in a festive plaid frock.  Whether, knit, flannel, or flowing tunic, there are several ways to get yourself checked out in plaid.  Try wearing with tights and boots or under a tough leather jacket.

Friday Frocks: I’m Just a Love Machine

Single or taken, Valentine’s Day conveniently falls on a Friday this year and so more likely than not, you will be leaving the confines of your cozy apartment to take on the town.  So, you may as well get into the spirit of this force fed love fest.  You don’t necessarily have to sausage yourself into a spandex red dress, although I’m sure those will be aplenty.  Opt for something softer in shades of pink or go bold in a graphic print be it floral, hearts, or darling polka dots.

Why Did You Wear That: A Walk in the Park

By |July 30th, 2013|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

It’s a rare occasion that I make it above 14th Street.  Leaving downtown at times feels like leaving the country.  Well, my country.  I’m not actually a neighborhood snob (okay, maybe), but for me, there’s not much reason for me to head uptown.  I used to go for the sole purpose of re-blonding, but then my hairstylist left the country… and I stopped coloring my hair.  Some even say your ears may pop when you cross 42nd Street. Whatever the case may be, I don’t make it up to the Upper West Side or the park very often.

I can’t decide if I gave up on Central Park after I realized there were about 3cm of park where Smitty was actually allowed to be or that time we got pelted by a football courtesy of a group of guys trying to catch our attention.  Speaking of which, a guy once asked me on a date to Central Park.  I never called him back.  Even my best friends have a tough time coercing me to the Upper West Side.  Given enough wine, I’ve found myself sleeping on their couch in the morning, pleased with myself for having passed out before the pizza arrived.  So, when my newly Americanized pal, suggested we head uptown and check out the park, I felt I had to oblige.  I suffered through a steamy subway ride and was soon reminded what a wonderful oasis we have in our otherwise concrete desert.kirsten smith nyc

Friday Frocks: In Full Bloom

By |March 15th, 2013|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

The Soho House roof has reopened, restaurants have started seating outdoors, and I’ve started applying self tanner.  Spring has (almost) arrived.  Keeping in theme with getting into the springtime spirit, the best kind of frocks are those with flowers.  Don’t fret, Pollyanna, not all floral frocks have to be fussy.  Get a flower printed pattern cut in a sleek modern silhouette to look feminine, but not five years old.  Not only is this look totally on trend, it’s sure to get you through the onslaught of summer weddings you’ll be forced to attend.

Friday Frocks: Shiny Disco Balls

By |December 28th, 2012|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

toasting at midnight

2012 is just about over… and I can’t pretend I’m sad about it.  To say it wasn’t my best year on record would be a minor massive understatement.  That said, I am really looking forward to bidding this year adieu.  Doing so will, of course, require a festive frock.  Last year I provided the alternative to a sequin stunner, but who am I kidding?  I love shiny things.  (I also love miniature horses and champagne cocktails).  Give me a reason to add glitter and I’ll gladly take you up on it.  New Year’s Eve is the perfect occasion to shine, so dust off those paillettes and party hats, the countdown to midnight has begun.
