Why Did You Wear That: Vive La Poncho

As someone who is currently wondering, who the f#*& snuck into my apartment while I was out and shrunk all of my pants in the commercial driers downstairs, I completely understand the post holiday bloat.  Too much drinking, too many late nights, slacking on those workouts, and allowing for one (hundred) too many cheat days, has left me giving new meaning to the term “skinny jeans.”  While the seams of my jeans hold on for dear life until I’ve managed to get my life back under control, I’ve taken to hiding my holiday leftovers in clever ways that don’t include Tupperware.  That’s right, it’s been a little while since I’ve sported a crop top and turns out, it’s not necessary to carb load when you aren’t training for a marathon.

One way that is conveniently cozy during this altogether dismal time of year, is draping oneself in what is called a “poncho.”

Now, ponchos have gotten a bit of a bad rap over the last, say, hundred thirty years, but the ponchos of present are anything but unkempt.  Great to wear for travel as well as for covering up those leggings on your way to Pilates, ladies- ponchos are the answer to all of our overeating.  I also love a poncho for lounging lackadaisically around the apartment on winter weekends while I scroll through Netflix for the hundred thousandth time wondering why it’s only suggesting I watch movies with tragic titles and strong female leads.  Because the Snuggie isn’t appropriate for public consumption and you haven’t yet reduced yourself to sweatpants, check out these alternative options in the form of ponchos.

Setting the Mood: Sweater Weather

I may have spent my childhood growing up in Florida, but I always had an attraction to too all things knitwear.  I remember wishing the thermometer would dip below sixty so I could find good reason for wearing sweaters so carefully selected by my doting grandma (Mee Maw), who lived up north and must’ve thought that even her granddaughter in the Sunshine State might catch cold without the proper attire.  I recall one sweater specifically.  It was a kelly green number embellished with some type of gold coin like discs that I wore as a tunic over a pair of black and white houndstooth stirrup (yes, stirrup) leggings.  See, even as an adolescent I knew the difference between leggings and pants.

As an adult, I had the privilege of taking my sweater obsession even further when I worked in knitwear product development for Henri Bendel’s famously fabulous cashmere.  I now know more about weaves, wefts, and fibers than I’d like to admit.  So, while there is a small window where we, northerners, will enjoy all that is fall before we trade in our cardigans for sleeping bag coats, I can’t deny my delight in draping myself in cozy cashmere and lofty knits.

Look for Less: Sweater Weather

By |November 20th, 2011|Look for Less, Why Did You Wear That?|

Have we come to terms with this weather yet?  Or are you one of those folks who wears a parka with flip flops?  C’mon.  Don’t do that to me.  Put away your cut off shorts, and let’s get those sweaters out of their Space Bags.  You should not be hanging your sweaters, after all.  Once upon a time, I had a pretty sweet gig working on product development for private label knitwear, so I know my yarns.  Whether you opt for merino or cashmere, it’s cold out there and the best way to bundle up is in a cozy sweater.  Check out how some of Hollywood’s cutest stars are wearing the warm and fuzzies:
