Setting the Mood: Make It Rain

By |March 31st, 2014|Setting the Mood|

rain fashion editorialWithout a doubt New Yorkers are some of the most intelligent and interesting people on the entire planet and yet all we can seem to talk about is the weather.  Like yesterday for instance, what the hell was that?  Thunder and flurries?  Perhaps we harp on it because it is one thing all of us share no matter our occupations or backgrounds or it could be the fact that all weather, whether heatwaves, snowstorms, or torrential downpours seem to be more extreme when experienced in the city.  In any case, today is the last day before April and though the icy temperatures have started to break (kind of) we always seem to forget that we are now set for another month of miserable grey skies and sloppy street puddles before real spring sets in.  So, brace yourselves and get weather ready with some storm essentials.  This is not a test.

Why Did You Wear That: Light Coat

By |March 19th, 2014|Why Did You Wear That?|

spring central parkTomorrow marks the first official day of spring, however, we’re not quite out of the woods when it comes to outerwear.  While we are left with only a couple more months where a jacket may still be needed, we can swap out the mundane black and grey wool for some lighter weight wares in pops of spring colors from melon to mint, printed to perforated.  Take your pick.

Why Did You Wear That: Almost.

kirsten smith nycYesterday was the first day in a long time that I didn’t have to wear a coat, but a jacket instead.  The thermostat skyrocketed to an unbelievable sixty one degrees although it still felt a little frosty west by the water.  And while skin started to show and our bodies but not hearts began to thaw, it wasn’t quite warm enough to convince me that spring is really on the way.  Restaurants weren’t the slightest bit hesitant about setting up their outdoor seating to capitalize on the overzealous weather revelers.  I even joined friends for rooftop cocktails at Soho House to celebrate (and photobooth foolery followed).  And while we do have only a week left of winter an entire extra hour of sun,  at some point it still does go down.

Why Did You Wear That: Runway Recap- For the Fashion Weak.

By |February 17th, 2014|Why Did You Wear That?|

mercedes-benz-fashion-weekLast week, New York was transformed into a real life, live action perfume ad.  Everywhere you looked long legged, bare faced beauties skid across ice covered cobblestone streets on the way to and from castings and shows like little human Bambis.  Fashion Week in New York has changed quite a bit in the years since I first started attending shows, especially after changing venues from Bryant Park to Lincoln Center.  It seems as if the week has become less and less about the fashion and more and more about snapping photos for social media and angling to have your photo snapped for various web publications (remember, I taught you how here?).  Front rows are full of bloggers and people who are wearing bizarre getups, while many buyers are left straining to see the runway while taking notes on the collections’ line sheets.  The only places harder to get into than the actual shows are the after parties which are chocked full of celebrities, celebrity hangers on, promoters, underage models, and certainly a rapper or two.  I should probably get better at celebrity spotting because after viewing party pictures of an event I’d attended, turns out a newly single Ryan Gosling was a mere banquette and ice cube toss away.  Oops.

Factor in the Polar Vortex blizzard like conditions, and not only was it difficult garnering enough motivation to leave my heated apartment, but the actual commute uptown and other various locations was at times painful.  Every time I thought I was about to miss a show, I was reminded that by being twenty minutes late, I was actually ten minutes early.  And since I have yet to be seated front row at all shows, I always found myself sitting behind people with giant headpieces and vision obstructing hairstyles.  As if that didn’t make the task of capturing a clear image of the catwalk daunting enough, be sure that there was a knucklehead (or two) who felt the need to hold his/her iPhone midair for the entire fifteen minutes of fashion.  But because I’ve mastered multitasking and warping my body into the most advantageous shape for scoping the show, I was able to capture bits and pieces of my week.  Just remember, all my suffering is all for you.

Why Did You Wear That: Boot, Scoot, Blizzard

new york snowIn case you missed it or your Instagram/Facebook feed was not spammed with Winter Wonderlandlike snapshots, it snowed in New York City yesterday.  And if you missed out on posting your very own frosty photo, don’t you worry- because as my chatty cab driver informed me this morning, we should be getting bombarded with another six inches this weekend.  That means one of two things: start stockpiling comfort food and libations or find footwear capable of navigating slush filled streets.  But, please don’t make them standard issue UGGs.  If you’re thinking it may be silly to invest in a pair of boots this late in the winter, let’s not forget that April showers bring May flowers and once it’s stopped being below freezing, we are sure to be showered for a couple more months before we fall back in love with the city during spring.
