Setting the Mood: Playing the Field

By |July 22nd, 2013|Setting the Mood|

athletic editorialI’m not even going to pretend I like sports.  I am not the girl you’re going to see at a bar cringing her way through a beer wearing her “team’s” jersey shouting profanities at the referee’s calls.  I’m just not.  The only “sport” I played in highschool was tennis and I was terrible at that.  Oh, and there was that one time I thought running track would be fun.  It wasn’t.  However, I can get down with the athletic look.  Way chicer than Umbros and far more pulled together than sweats, designers have put their own spin on sports.  The varsity jacket has been reinvented and you don’t even have to date the quarterback to score your own.  Track pants and shorts that are acceptable to wear well past practice.  Sneakers and a Slimane jersey will have you rooting for the home team.

Setting the Mood: White Heat

By |July 8th, 2013|Setting the Mood|

summer whites mood boardHalfway through summer and all the way to the top of the thermometer.  The July heat is nearly unbearable and it’s those humid days where it feels as if anything heavier than a tissue would be too much to wear.  While a New  Yorker’s standard uniform seems to be perpetually black, reversing roles in all white seems to lighten things both literally and figuratively.  Ivory, bone, eggshell, and stark white in linen, lace, crochet and chiffon will keep you cool and cool you down.

Setting the Mood: God Bless…

By |July 1st, 2013|Setting the Mood|

fourth of july fashionAt times I may complain that ol’ US of A has gone down the sh…. I feel blessed to live in a country where what I say, do, wear, and think can’t really be censored… well, for the meantime, at least.  I believe Congress is working on that.  Sure there are Kardashians and fast food chains, but for the most part, the United States of America is what so many people dream of, work for, and aspire to be.  Perhaps we should remember where we came from and attempt to become model citizens of the great states of America…again.  Let’s make Abe and George proud.  Bake that apple pie, put on your best red, white, and blue, and celebrate… we’re Americans, ya’ll.

Setting the Mood: Golden Girls

By |June 10th, 2013|Setting the Mood|

On more than one occasion, read every time we’re discussing another traumatizing date or ex from hell over cocktails, my girlfriends and I revisit the idea of just going in on a townhouse and becoming the modern day Golden Girls… about thirty years early.  Anyone who knows me well, knows that I fall asleep nearly every evening listening to the witty banter between Blanche, Rose, Dorothy and Sophia.  I can’t wait to be a Golden Girl.  And in that spirit, I’m not going to wait– and neither should you.

I’m not suggesting you run to the closest American Apparel and purchase every item in gold lamé.  Not even close.  I am, however, suggesting you bring out your inner golden glow by wearing it right where everyone can see it.  Add some shimmer to your summer beauty routine with these shiny solutions.

Setting the Mood: What a Treat

By |June 3rd, 2013|Setting the Mood|

Ah, at long last, summer weather has arrived (it would seem we just skipped over spring).  Wait, what?  It’s raining today?

Well, in any case, it was (insert expletive) hot this past weekend, which had me fiending for something cold other than rosé… although I had some of that too.  I couldn’t help literally treating myself to something sweet in the frozen form.  And apparently I wasn’t alone seeing as the line for Big Gay Ice Cream in the East Village was all the way down the block on Sunday.  I didn’t feel the least bit guilty indulging because I probably just sweat it off anyhow, right?  If the ice cream man hasn’t cometh, I found this pretty amazing recipe for Sangria Rosé Popsicles from Wine Kitz Pickering that is sure to satisfy your sweet tooth:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups rosé wine (choose one with flavours that complement the fruit you use in the rest of the recipe – ours was a blend of Pinot, Gamay, Merlot and Shiraz, with flavours of red berries and licorice, and aromas of sour cherry, watermelon and strawberry, so we opted for a raspberry-rhubarb pairing, with grapefruit to offset the sweetness)
  • 1/2 grapefruit (or 1 lemon, if you’d prefer)
  • 1 pint raspberries (reserve some to add to popsicles whole)
  • 1/2 to 1 cup simple syrup
  • 1 stalk rhubarb, chopped

Directions:

  1. Chop rhubarb and make simple syrup:  Wash and chop your stalk of rhubarb.  In a pot over medium heat, bring 1/2 cup of water and 1/2 cup of sugar to a boil – just to dissolve sugar.  Once sugar is dissolved, add rhubarb and bring to a simmer.  Cook until rhubarb is soft, then remove from heat.
  2. Purée rhubarb simple syrup and raspberries, add grapefruit and wine:  Pour your rhubarb simple syrup and 3/4 of the raspberries into your blender and purée.  Then juice your grapefruit and add the juice, along with your rosé wine, to the blender and pulse to combine.
  3. Pour into molds:  Add a few whole raspberries to each mould, if possible, then pour in your wine-simple syrup mix.  Freeze until solid, then enjoy!

Happy slurping.
