Why Did You Wear That: Red Hot Red Carpet

By |February 28th, 2011|Red Carpet Recap|

Without a doubt the color of the 2011 Academy Awards was fierce, fiery, red.  From the beautifully structured Vera Wang gown donned by the always stunning Sandra Bullock, to the incredibly minimal Calvin Klein sheath that Jennifer Lawrence slipped into, red was the color that stole the show.  These ladies prove that anyone can look stellar in red.  Whether you are a deep brunette or a sunny blonde, all you need to do is choose the right shade of crimson for you.

If you didn’t go for bold fire engine red, you might have picked something shimmery.  Metallics were still very strong on the red carpet for the Oscars.  One of my very favorites was the ethereal Monique Lhuillier gown worn by Mandy Moore. Also wearing a gauzy gown, was Halle Berry in Marchesa.  My only qualm with her is that same old hairdo.  Time for an update, girl.  Hailee Steinfeld also wore Marchesa (designed for her!) and looked absolutely adorable and age appropriate.  I think we have a future fashionista on our hands.

Two other lovely ladies who wore the metallic trend were Gwyneth Paltrow in Calvin Klein and Celine Dion in Armani Prive.  I must admit, my initial reaction to Gwyneth was “Ick!”  The more I looked at her and saw detail shots, the more I loved how simple and chic her sequin sheath was.  Celine picked a perfect Armani Prive option.  It’s hard to believe this woman just gave birth to twins!

One of the first dresses that I saw when tuning into the red carpet arrivals was Mila Kunis’s Elie Saab gown.  Although I was really nervous about her having a nip slip at any given moment, I already knew she was my best dressed for the evening.  I absolutely loved that shade of lavender on her (or really on anyone for that matter).  The dress was detailed and romantic without being fussy.  Another dress in this same hue, was Cate Blanchett’s Givenchy creation.  This was another dress that I despised upon first glance, but I have to say, the detailing on it was amazing and the color was perfect with her hair and makeup.  I also love the pop of citrusy yellow/green beading that carries over to the back. I think it’s the weird square sleeve’lettes that are throwing me off.

The next two dresses were quite controversial as I watched my Twitter feed this evening.  At first glance, I really like the way Amy Adams looks in her L’wren Scott sequined column dress.  There’s nothing prettier than a red head wearing navy blue.  However, her accessories were totally unnecessary.  She didn’t need them at all.  A lot of people were calling this “Jessica Rabbit gone wrong” but I think it was a really pretty look for her.  Marisa Tomei sported a vintage Charles James navy gown.  I really don’t like this dress.  Mostly because it just does not fit her.  It is totally ill fitted and it actually looks uncomfortable under her armpits.

I’m fairly certain everyone was waiting with bated breath to see what Natalie Portman would wear tonight.  She was a late arrival and some even thought she might not do the red carpet at all due to her impending pregnancy.  But alas, she arrived in Rodarte and looked absolutely flawless.  She appeared to be completely miserable during her interviews on the red carpet, but let’s just blame that on pregnancy hormones.  Another man’s fantasy woman who wore a similar shade was Scarlett Johansson.  As beautiful as she is, her Dolce and Gabbana reminded me of something you could have purchased from bebe circa 2002.  I also, am not digging her new ‘do whatsoever.  All I wanted to do was spritz her with some dry shampoo and run a brush through it not to mention the FUPA illusion it is giving her.

I can’t say that I was truly appalled by anyone’s outfit this evening, which is totally disappointing… well, except Mark Ruffalo’s wife’s bizarre extra arm appendage dress thingy. So who were you favorites on the red carpet?

Monday Mashup: Red Carpet Repeat

By |January 17th, 2011|Monday Mashup|

So, before I announce who I found fantastic and who made me cry “foul!”, I decided to recap the rest of the red carpet from the Golden Globes.  Um… I can’t help but notice… there were a lot of duplications in the wardrobe department.  Whoops! Perhaps the stylists in Hollywood need to communicate more.  Having a twin on the red carpet might be every starlet’s worst nightmare, but seeing double gives us much more to compare come Monday.  While I have my own opinions on who rocked the look best, I’m going to go ahead and let you- my usually fashionably elite- readers decide. Now, behold the beauties that were the Golden Globes:

A Case of the Ex:

Sandra Bullock in Jenny Packham vs. Scarlett Johansson in Elie Saab

Moody Nudes:

Carrie Underwood in Badgley Mischka vs. Dianna Agron in J. Mendel

Pretty in Pink:

Lea Michele in Oscar de la Renta vs. Megan Fox in Armani Prive

Is White Right?

Jennifer Love Hewitt in Romona Keveza vs. Jennifer Lopez in Zuhair Murad

Why Did You Wear That: This Week’s Top 10 Celebrity Looks

By |October 30th, 2010|Celebrity Style|
  1. Demi Moore in this Balmain dress… I mean, I can’t. She looks insane! Ashton doesn’t look too bad either.
  2. Leighton Meester, always picture perfect in Elie Saab.
  3. Claire Danes proves that simple black is always chic with this Lanvin gown.
  4. Sienna Miller is absolutely stunning in Stella McCartney. Take note, Riri. This is the way nude is done.
  5. Selita Ebanks steps out and shines in this little number. Not sure who she’s wearing, but it’s a hell of a lot better than that bird get up in Kanye’s Runaway “movie.”
  6. Never thought I’d see the day. Here is Rachel Zoe at Lanvin’s Halloween Party looking the way she always should. Glam.
  7. Freida Pinto wearing Chritian Dior in a shade of green that was meant for her.
  8. Speaking of green, the sexiest woman alive, Minka Kelly, sports a mini that just makes us green with envy.
  9. Demi has been working it out this week. Here she is in an outfit that looks like it came straight from WhyDid’s closet. Can you believe this woman is 47?!
  10. And last, but most certainly not least we have the absolutely adorable Violet Affleck looking precisely how a little girl should look. Sugar, spice, and everything nice.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Red Carpet Recap: The Money Shot…

By |March 8th, 2010|Red Carpet Recap, Why Did You Wear That?|

Typically I find the big award shows to be one big snooze fest. It seems like a lot of people wearing the gowns they weren’t able to wear at their senior proms. However, this year I was pleasantly surprised. Despite the fact that I spent my morning doing the oh-so rigorous Intensanti with WhyDon’tYouActLikeALady, I didn’t fall asleep (let alone yawn) during the red carpet pre-show. Below are some of the good, bad, and just plain ol’ ugly.

The Good:

ap_meryl_streep_oscar_100307_ssv

Speaking of pleasantly surprised, Meryl Streep looked stunning in Chris March (Project Runway). She is a great example for the older actresses everywhere (take note: she covered her ARMS!!). An absolute perfect choice.

2010-03-08-97515301

Sandra Bullock has really never looked better. Her hair and makeup make her look totally feminine and this dress by Marchesa is truly a departure for her. Obviously Oscar worthy.

2010-03-08-97515655

Some may disagree with me, but she’s SARAH JESSICA PARKER for crying out loud! Would you really expect her to wear some run of the mill satin gown? Abso not! The pale yellow of her Chanel gown is beautiful on her and I love, love, loved her gigantic hairdo. Matt, you’re not looking too bad either.

miley-cyrus-030710-2

Despite the fact that Miley is slouching as if she’s got osteoporosis at age 17, I thought this was a wonderful choice for her (Jenny Packham). It’s a little more grown up, while still maintaining a youthfulness about it. Well played, Hannah Montana.

rachel-mcadams-030710-1

At first, I wasn’t a believer. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a sucker for Rachel McAdams. She’s a gorgeous girl. This dress absolutely grew on me like fungus and it is so different from the typical tulle and taffeta. Bravo, Elie Saab!

oscars32.JPG

Not a huge Cameron Diaz fan, but I am a fan of her in this Bulgari creation. She looks absolutely delightful.

oscars07.JPGElizabeth Banks looks amazing in this grey number by Atelier Versace. My only call out? That cheeseball headband. Just too much.

robert-downey-jr-290

I don’t usually find the men’s outfits all that enthralling, but I do love that Robert Downey Jr. decided to be playful with his accessories. Sometimes it gets so boring with everyone in the standard black and white.

The Bad:

2010-03-08-97515622

I’m 50% sure that Tina Fey is, in fact, wearing a Bump It. Yes, a Bump It a la Snookie on the Jersey Shore. This Michael Kors dress would have been okay on her, if she had just styled the rest of herself correctly.

nicole-richie

This dress by Reem Acra isn’t HORRIFIC, but it does remind me of something my grandma would wear by the pool in Palm Beach. To “top” it off, her hair looks like she was getting in a last minute pre-Oscar workout and didn’t have time to wash it, let alone, dry shampoo.

2010-03-07-amandaseyfried

I have a serious girl crush on Amanda Seyfried, but I do NOT have a girl crush on her Armani Prive. It is not a flattering color for Amanda and it is just too much dress for her. Better luck next time.

george-clooney-435

I think someone summed it up best when they said, “George Clooney looks like a lesbian.”  I mean, I have to agree. What is going on? And what is going on with Elisabetta’s shawl? Are we really at Junior Prom?

The Ugly:

jennifer-lopez-030710-2First of all, WHY ARE YOU HERE??? That being said, your Armani Prive frock is a fashion fail. It looked like cotton candy gone wrong (as if that’s even possible). For a curvy girl, you should know better than to draw more attention to your hips than you need to.

2010-03-07-97515141Maggie, Maggie, Maggie. Really? Were you on your way to a luau and lost your way? Your Dries Van Noten looks like a Hawaiian shirt gone all kinds of wrong. Mahalo.

2010-03-08-97515223

Oh, did you forget you silverware? No worries, Carey’s got you covered in her Prada gown encrusted with all different types of hardware. Dig in.

2010-03-08-97515266

Diane Kruger is typically a fashion dream come true, but she’s kind of my worst nightmare in this dress by Chanel.

2010-03-07-97514964

Yike, yikes, yikes! Zoe Saldana is fashion schizophrenia in her Givenchy gown. The top is actually kind of beautiful. Unfortunately, the red carpet isn’t shot from the waist up. The bottom looks like a cross between a purple poodle and a garden of hydrangeas.

charlize-theron-030710-6

Okay, seriously? Do I even need to go into a diatribe about the nipple covers on Charlize’s Dior gown?

And the Ridic:

gabourey-sidibe-435

I mean, this is all I’m going to say (quote), “If fashion was porn, this dress would be the money shot.” Um, thanks for the… err… visual, Gabourey.

All we really wanna know is where was Lindsay Lohan?  Now back to the beach.
