Why Did You Wear That: Soak It In

By |August 25th, 2011|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

A month or so ago, I had the pleasure of staying at the Napa River Inn and while the entire place was quite magical, one of my favorite parts was the beautiful claw foot bathtub. To be honest, the only thing better than soaking all your troubles away in a beautiful big tub with fizzy bath salts is doing so with a big fizzy glass of sparkling wine. While I couldn’t document said activities on WhyDid without getting a stern email from my father, I couldn’t pass up the chance to snap some photos of this beautiful (and my dream) bathroom.

Lace pants and a silky top were perfectly sexy and sophisticated for a romantic Saturday night dinner in Napa (not so much for a bath). Accessorized with shiny metallic sandals and my go to bangles for just the right amount of sparkle.

1. Leyendecker Chopper Blouse, $231, 2. Love Moschino Black Cropped Lace Trousers, $376.20, 3. MAC Lipstick in Russian Red, $14.50, 4. Alex & Ani Set of 7 Gold Dimpled Bangles, $74.99, 5. Jimmy Choo Buzz Platform Sandals, $628

That’s the only time Smitty has been anxious to hop in the tub, FYI.

Why Did You Wear That: Layering Up

By |August 14th, 2011|Look for Less, Why Did You Wear That?|

Three of my favorite looks from this week all have something in common.  They are all great transitional outfits.  As much as I hate to say it, summer is in its final stretch and fall is fast approaching.  During this time of year, it’s always tricky trying to figure out what to put on– or take off.  The weather is as temperamental as a woman with PMS and no M&M’s.  The only way to get your look right during this time of year is by layering up.  From Olivia Wilde’s cozy and casual look to Emma Stone’s red carpet Chanel Couture, these lovely ladies have mastered the art of layering and you can too by following these easy to put together layered looks (if you need a layering refresher course, click here):

1. All Saints Departed Hoodie, $67.50, 2. Mossimo Jersey Knit Maxi Skirt, $17.99, 3. Kashmere Blue Double Floral Print Cashmere Scarf, $138, 4. Forever 21 Cay Eye Sunglasses, $5.80

1. BCBG Emma Button Down Silk Chiffon Blouse, $168, 2. GYPSY 05 Carmen Twist Skirt, $99, 3. MICHAEL by Michael Kors Jenna Wedge Sandals, $145, 4. Staring at Stars Embellished Eternity Scarf, $32, 5. Elliot Lucca Millana Camera Snake Embossed Crossbody Bag, $64.90, 6. Urban Outfitters Tortoise Trim Aviator Sunglasses, $16

1. Matty M Pearl Metallic Crocheted Sequin Top, $43.99, 2. American Apparel Chiffon Full Length Skirt, $46, 3. M. Flynn Chandelier Cluster Earrings, $88, 4. Diane von Furstenberg Harper Evening Flap Shoulder Bag, $450, 5. Stuart Weitzman Nude Patent Daisy Pumps, $140.25

Why Did You Wear That: Destination Unknown

By |July 14th, 2011|Why Did You Wear That?|

Today I was told to pack a suitcase.  No, not like the, “Get out of my house and get to steppin’ you, crazy bitch!” kind of suitcase.  More of the romantic surprise getaway and I’m not telling you wheeeeere suitcase.  See, tomorrow is my beloved and my anniversary.  I know.  I found myself a true Romeo (no, seriously, he’s a dream come true).  I have no idea where we’re headed, but wait til he gets a load of his gift.  (That’s what you get for marrying a writer, honey).  Anyway, I’m not that great at packing to begin with, so throwing me a curveball like this makes stuffing my suitcase that much more difficult.

Since I know you ladies are just as lovely, I don’t doubt that something like this will also happen to you.  So, to help you out, I’ve figured out how to pack for a destination unknown.  The key is versatility.  Pack things that can be both dressed up and dressed down.  Be sure to tuck a pair of flats (or comfortable shoes) along with some sexy stilettos in your bag.  To jazz up your daytime attire, be sure to bring your bling.  Accessories are crucial in taking any outfit from casual to cosmopolitan.

1. LNA Sunglasses, $195, 2. Michael Kors Leather Clutch, $395, 3. Diane von Furstenberg Camargue  20″ Rolling Duffle Bag, $200, 4. Eberjey Fairy Tales Teddy, $72, 5. Free People Polynesian Princess Romper, $118, 6. Cia.Maritima Leopard Print Top, $48 and Bottom, $68, 7. T-Bags Maxi Dress, $185, 8. Wyatt Heather Grey Cashmere Waterfall Cardigan, $169, 9. Amrita Singh Reversible Resin Necklace, $300, 10. Kenneth Jay Lane Satin Finish Bracelet, $150, 11. Co-Op Barney’s New York Flat Metallic Sandal, $330, 12. Bottega Veneta Strappy Wooden Sandal, $1,015

Don’t forget your sunglasses and something sexy.  No matter where you’re headed, just remember, you’re there to have fun and clearly your honey thinks you’re pretty spectacular already.

Why Did You Wear That: Little Black What?

By |June 14th, 2011|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

Every girl owns (or at least she should own) the perfect little black dress.  But wearing the same hot little number cocktail party after cocktail party can leave a girl feeling bored with what once was a no brainer.  Not even swapping accessories can change things.  Like a rubik’s cube, there are only so many combinations.  This is when you must channel your inner Macgyver and start rigging up new and inventive cocktail combinations.

Besides the LBD (little black dress for the slow pokes), another staple piece is a black pencil skirt.  You may be thinking to yourself, “That’s a little too Betty Draper for me.”  Well, let me tell you, the pencil skirt has stuck around for a reason.  Fitted properly, a pencil skirt can make even the most waifish gal look more Beyonce and less Olive Oil.  To offset the conservative pencil skirt, I paired it with a cropped bandeau top (this little guy happened to be a DVF sample and would benefit greatly from some time spent at a seamstress).  Classic black pumps, top notch top knot, and a sequined jacket completed this unconventional, but totally cocktail appropriate attire.

Before creating this look yourself, remember to use some common sense: 1. Will this look good on you? If you could benefit from a few more sit ups, hold off until you’re bare belly brazen. 2. Where are you planning to wear it?  A funeral or wedding is probably not the right time for this.  Save it for a more appropriate occasion.

1. Cosabella Marni Strapless Plunge Bra, $132.50, 2. Diane von Furstenberg Panel Marta Techno Jersey High Waist Pencil Skirt, $210, 3. Tuleste Market Layered Ball & Chain Necklace, $150, 4. Harrison Morgan Black Sequin Bolero, $220, 5. Christian Louboutin Pigalle 120 Patent Pumps, $595

Friday Frocks: Maxed Out

By |May 20th, 2011|Friday Frocks|

I HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR!!! How many times have you shouted that at your closet whilst standing there staring at its contents in just your skivvies? For me, the number of times is countless. No need to take it out on your poor wardrobe though.  Instead invest in the never fail fashion trend: the maxi dress.    The easiest way to look chic this summer is by slipping into a maxi dress.  Don’t believe me? Here’s my top five reasons for maxing out:

  1. It’s basically one step dressing.  A maxi dress has the ability to make you look feminine and romantic without trying.
  2. Maxis are incredibly figure forgiving.  Eat as much potato salad as you please.
  3. You don’t need to shave your legs.  (Sorry, fellas).
  4. Perfect for pairing with flats.  Give those tootsies a rest!
  5. You can hide small children, pets, and thunder thighs under them.

Whether you choose a breezy bohemian style or a simple slinky column, you’re bound to turn a few heads in one of these:

1. Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent Flutter Sleeve Maxi Dress, $366, 2. Diane von Furstenberg Ethyl Long Wrap Maxi Dress, $545, 3. Winter Kate Silk Maxi Dress, $260, 4. Free People Hippie Trip Maxi Dress, $198, 5. French Connection Leah Linen Maxi Dress, $108, 6. All Saint Pious Maxi Dress, $90, 7. Vintage Havana Tie Dye Maxi Dress, $64, 8. Gypsy 05 Long Organi Alligator Maxi Dress, $149, 9. Free People Polynesian Princess Maxi Dress, $198, 10. Style Stalker Venom Maxi Dress, $169, 11. Alice + Olivia Printed Halter Maxi Dress, $440, 12. Shoshanna Twist Front Printed Maxi Dress, $485

Chillin’ out, maxin’, relaxin’ all cool.
