Beauty Buzz: Somebody Call 911

By |August 20th, 2013|Beauty Buzz|

We’re busy women.  We somehow balance careers, friendships, love lives, and sometimes even children.  How is it even possible that we manage to keep it together while still looking fresh as a girl from the Midwest two weeks into living in the city?  Well, it takes tact.  As any savvy woman can tell you, nothing is an accident  You got a last minute invite for after work cocktails, you squeezed in a Pilates class during lunch break, or perhaps you’d rather your “walk of shame” more resemble a “stride of pride,” which I wouldn’t know a thing about… Whatever your beauty emergency may be, you need to be prepared.  I was never a Girl Scout, but I do believe it is best to be ready for just about anything.

Remember when I said the Sephora sample section was the Bermuda Triangle of beauty?  Well, in this instance, it’s best to gather supplies and pack your purse full of a few crunch time essentials that will always having you looking polished, not foolish.

Beauty Buzz: Go Naked

By |July 18th, 2013|Beauty Buzz|

artistic nudeWe’re all already obsessed with Urban Decay’s Naked Palette (and Naked 2 Palette) with good reason.  And if you’re not, well, get obsessed.  One day, while picking up some essentials from Sephora, I got sucked into the sample section.  It’s like the Bermuda Triangle for beauty junkies.  Steer clear or risk having no groceries for the next week.  Along with a purse size tube of L’Occitane Hand Cream, I snagged a sample of Urban Decay’s Naked Skin Beauty Balm.  I mean, why not?

Urban Decay Naked Skin Beauty Balm

The claim is that it’s an “instant retoucher in a tube.”  With five different skin benefits including SPF 20 and anti-aging ingredients, this balm is like one stop shopping.  As mentioned, I don’t love a lot of makeup on my skin and this beauty balm, goes on so smooth and light that sometimes I feel like I haven’t put enough on.  However, when I peer at my reflection in the mirror, my skin literally does look like it’s been photoshopped.  It quickly evens skintone and reduces the appearance of pores and fine lines,  although you will probably still need a concealer to hide any unsightly behemoth blemishes, like the one I use from Miracle Skin Transformer.  The only thing I found a bit odd about this formula was the slightly minty scent.  It’s not offensive.  It just sort of seems off.  If you’re looking for the perfect lightweight summer skin smoother, grab a tube… but steer clear of the samples.

Beauty Buzz: Star Spangled Beauty

american flag makeupAlright, so you can’t even begin to stomach strapping on a star studded tank top or holiday color coordinated outfit.  That’s fine.  Just don’t be a totally Sally Suckpants refusing to play along whatsoever.  Incorporate a little bit of your American pride this Fourth of July by wearing the colors of our flag on your face (and nails).  Navy liner rimming your lids, cherry red lips, and a slick white manicure will have people believing Lenny Kravitz wrote American Woman for you- and why shouldn’t they?

Beauty Buzz: Hide… Don’t Seek.

By |May 30th, 2013|Beauty Buzz|

For years, I’d basically given up on finding a good concealer.  When a not so friendly facial visitor would set up shop on my face, I just tried to blend it as best I could then play a little game of smoke and mirrors by piling on the Benetint and upping the eyeliner.  I found that most concealers ended up making blemishes look that much more noticeable– like, literally making a mountain out of a molehill.   Then one fateful evening before a first date, I peered into the mirror in horror.  I was either growing a pimple directly between my brows or I was finally turning into a unicorn.  Turns out it was the former.  I didn’t really have time to perform “surgery” on it, so I checked to see what samples I had lying around.  Well, as luck would have it, I had a teeny tube of Miracle Skin Transformer Treat & Conceal.  A tiny dab on my pesky pimple and au revoir!  No one would be the wiser.  So, next time another blemish decides to make an appearance, I’m fully armed and it won’t set me back a month’s rent like the cult favorite from Cle de Peau.

Miracle Skin Transformer Treat & Conceal Eye & Face

And for the record, the only one who got lucky that evening was me… for finding my new favorite concealer.

By |May 16th, 2013|Beauty Buzz|

There comes a time in everyone’s life where we may need to tighten the the ol’ metaphorial belt. It becomes a tough judgement call between a bottle of Whispering Angel on the rooftop of Soho House or that fancy facial serum. Decisions, decisions… When it comes to my beauty routine, I’m not one who likes to skimp on the essentials, however, when push comes to shove, there are a few luxury items that I’ve been able to swap out for their drugstore counterparts without sacrificing my standards. Below are a few products that I literally use on a daily basis and their pricier companions that I’ve had to trade in for the time being… and truth be told, I may not even switch back when my ship comes in.
