Yesterday was the first day in a long time that I didn’t have to wear a coat, but a jacket instead. The thermostat skyrocketed to an unbelievable sixty one degrees although it still felt a little frosty west by the water. And while skin started to show and our bodies but not hearts began to thaw, it wasn’t quite warm enough to convince me that spring is really on the way. Restaurants weren’t the slightest bit hesitant about setting up their outdoor seating to capitalize on the overzealous weather revelers. I even joined friends for rooftop cocktails at Soho House to celebrate (and photobooth foolery followed). And while we do have only a week left of winter an entire extra hour of sun, at some point it still does go down.

Setting the Mood: Go Green

While all of us damn near took sledgehammers to our alarm clocks this morning thanks to Daylight Savings, we were stopped only upon realization that this tortuous early wake up call puts us that much closer to spring… and our alarm clocks are more than likely our most prized possessions, our cell phones– and it’s very difficult to choose the right Instagram filter with a cracked screen, not to mention dangerous.

And although we’ve safely guided ourselves through and survived the onslaught of holidays starting in November and ending with the massacre that is Valentines’s Day, there is one more left that I hesitate to actually qualify as a holiday. The “holiday” to which I’m referring is St. Patrick’s Day and the only thing I despise more than the streets of my beloved city being crammed full of drunken non-Irish leprechauns is that one obnoxious human who will, without fail, attempt to pinch you due to not wearing a speck of green. My younger self had much stronger feelings as to which green was appropriate (A refresher of NYC on St. Patrick’s Day), my older wiser self is much more lax and think even a green juice should count. So, let’s play along and get our green on.

Friday Frocks: Cover. Up.

All seasoned spring break babes know that the only part of your poolside wardrobe almost as important as the bikini is the coverup. And maybe your shades, but let’s stick with the former. The coverup must be more than your shredded denim shorts and American Apparel tank top. Everyone knows I love lingerie, a good cocktail, and my maltipoo, Smitty. Something else I love more than the average juice fasting female is swimwear. Some girls are all about bags, some about shoes and while I love both, a bikini is always certain to catch my attention as well as my paycheck. I even consider myself a bit of a bathing suit expert. I mean, I spent two years having the pleasure of filling Bendel’s with barely there beachwear.

I love bathing suits so much there are times when I wonder why I don’t just move to an island and live in a bikini whilst sipping on fresh coconuts, but then I get bored even imagining it and continue on in my concrete jungle.

Sure, this took me the greater portion of a day to pull together, but because I love swimwear so much, I enjoyed every moment of it. Setting the Mood: … And Break.

Your definition of “spring break” doesn’t necessarily need to include a wet t-shirt contest and well tequila shot from a super soaker into your already inebriated mouth. Sometimes the best kind of spring breaks are those spent with close friends in low key locations. Sure, during my years as a co-ed I visited the obvious and oh so exotic locales of Aculpulco, Cancun, and Panama City, but never did I appear in a Girls Gone Wild DVD, nor did I awake in nothing but plastic beads. I did, however, misplace my purse and nearly face a lifetime spent in Mexico without government ID. But alas, UPS delivers to all of Northern America and I was returned home safely to two less than impressed parental units. While my behavior south of the border was less than stellar, let’s just remember that I was far from bikini clad, AK47 holding, Riff Raff groupie, so I call that a “win.” And why should we ditch the tradition once we’ve earned our undergraduate degrees? Maybe, much like naps, spring break is a tradition that should span on throughout all of adulthood.
