Why Did You Wear That: Soak It In

By |August 25th, 2011|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

A month or so ago, I had the pleasure of staying at the Napa River Inn and while the entire place was quite magical, one of my favorite parts was the beautiful claw foot bathtub. To be honest, the only thing better than soaking all your troubles away in a beautiful big tub with fizzy bath salts is doing so with a big fizzy glass of sparkling wine. While I couldn’t document said activities on WhyDid without getting a stern email from my father, I couldn’t pass up the chance to snap some photos of this beautiful (and my dream) bathroom.

Lace pants and a silky top were perfectly sexy and sophisticated for a romantic Saturday night dinner in Napa (not so much for a bath). Accessorized with shiny metallic sandals and my go to bangles for just the right amount of sparkle.

1. Leyendecker Chopper Blouse, $231, 2. Love Moschino Black Cropped Lace Trousers, $376.20, 3. MAC Lipstick in Russian Red, $14.50, 4. Alex & Ani Set of 7 Gold Dimpled Bangles, $74.99, 5. Jimmy Choo Buzz Platform Sandals, $628

That’s the only time Smitty has been anxious to hop in the tub, FYI.

Why Did You Wear That: Party Pants

By |August 16th, 2011|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

This is one of my all time favorite outfits and these sequin shorts may seem silly, but I’ve found them to be awfully versatile. This particular pair of party pants has made its way from the Standard in New York to the Chateau Marmont in LA and had a blast all along the way.

Since moving up north, all my “fun” clothes have been doing nothing but collecting dust. Needless to say, my sequin shorts haven’t seen the light of day. Sorry, kids, unless you love to wear North Face, Patagonia and J. Crew when you’re feeling jazzy, Northern California is not for you.  But just because I’m suffering doesn’t mean you need to be.

Ready to turn your pants into a party? Thought so:

1. Kill City Good Country Muscle Tee, $52, 2. Chan Luu Sequined Track Shorts, $148, 3. Rachel Roy Cross Charm Bracelet, $65, 4. Anya Hindmarch Sea Snake Valerie Clutch, $650, 5. Dolce Vita Madison Platform Pump, $165

Are sequin shorts the new LBD? No, probably not, but they are certainly a fun addition to any girl’s wardrobe.

Why Did You Wear That: Jump On It

By |July 19th, 2011|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

There she is.  The romper’s big sister, the jumpsuit.  Let it be known, I love a good romper, but sometimes, a girl needs a little variety.  That’s where the jumpsuit comes in.  While the romper is considered to be quite casual, a jumpsuit can easily be accessorized into a striking evening option.

Some good things about jumpsuits:

  • It’s one stop dressing!  Your top and your pants are connected!
  • Wearing a jumpsuit is kind of like wearing adult onesie pajamas.
  • It’s no coincidence that when I try to type jumpsuit, I keep typing “humpsuit.”

Some less than good things about jumpsuits:

  • Probably not going to attract too many fellas with your new jumpsuit induced FUPA.
  • Awkward moments in the bathroom.

Ready to “jump” on this trend?  I like to go all 80’s when accessorizing this trend.  Deep side part, pearl accessories, and shimmery makeup.  Depending on the type of jumpsuit, you could do both heels or flats (though I might point out you already look like a jerk- probably best to stick with heels).  Remember to allot extra time for the restroom and you’re good to go.

1. Sunahara El Sol Jumpsuit, $125, 2. Free People Floral Printed Romper, $118, 3. Theory Garvie Cotton and Modal Jumpsuit, $215,  4. Halston Heritage Cold Shoulder Jumpsuit, $125, 5. Alice + Olivia Dawn Pleated Top Jumpsuit, $440,  6. Lucy in Disguise The Roxy Jumpsuit, $305, 7. Rachel Roy 24 Hour Jumpsuit, $129, 8. Karina Grimaldi Basic Jumper, $239

Why Did You Wear That: Clean Up in Aisle 4

By |June 28th, 2011|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

Fun Fact: I HATE grocery shopping.  I despise going.  When I lived in New York, I used this awesome thing called MaxDelivery.com.  You go online, order, and voila! Your groceries are delivered to your door in an hour.  (You’re welcome, New Yorkers).  Sadly, the grocery store is a necessary evil in most other cities, so I must trick myself into making it fun.  This week, I played a little game of dress up. Channeling my inner “housewife,” I shimmied up and down the aisles crossing things off my list.

Fun Fact #2: This dress is a vintage (or just used) dress from my mom.  The first time I wore it, I wasn’t aware how sheer it was.  As I walked through the streets of Manhattan, I thought I was pretty darn sexy seeing as I was getting lots of looks (both male and female). It wasn’t until I passed by an especially reflective window that I realized you could see all my bits and pieces.  Oops!  Luckily, I was still working in the buying office at Bendels and had some samples behind my desk to remedy my accidental peep show.

Fun Fact #3: The tiny Dooney & Bourke bag was a bag my mom got me when I was a little girl so that I could match her.  I only brought it out of the archives about a year ago and I love it, not only because it’s tiny, but because of the special sentimental value (not going to lie… wouldn’t carry a Dooney otherwise).

1. Dahlia Anchor Print Chiffon Tea Dress, $112.05, 2. Tabitha Simmons Linen and Silk Sandal Bootie, $595, 3. Dooney & Bourke Navy Surrey Bag, $100, 4. Minor Obsessions Anchor Charm Necklace, $315, 5. On Gossamer Black Lace Trim Sleek Slip, $48

Why Did You Wear That: Little Black What?

By |June 14th, 2011|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

Every girl owns (or at least she should own) the perfect little black dress.  But wearing the same hot little number cocktail party after cocktail party can leave a girl feeling bored with what once was a no brainer.  Not even swapping accessories can change things.  Like a rubik’s cube, there are only so many combinations.  This is when you must channel your inner Macgyver and start rigging up new and inventive cocktail combinations.

Besides the LBD (little black dress for the slow pokes), another staple piece is a black pencil skirt.  You may be thinking to yourself, “That’s a little too Betty Draper for me.”  Well, let me tell you, the pencil skirt has stuck around for a reason.  Fitted properly, a pencil skirt can make even the most waifish gal look more Beyonce and less Olive Oil.  To offset the conservative pencil skirt, I paired it with a cropped bandeau top (this little guy happened to be a DVF sample and would benefit greatly from some time spent at a seamstress).  Classic black pumps, top notch top knot, and a sequined jacket completed this unconventional, but totally cocktail appropriate attire.

Before creating this look yourself, remember to use some common sense: 1. Will this look good on you? If you could benefit from a few more sit ups, hold off until you’re bare belly brazen. 2. Where are you planning to wear it?  A funeral or wedding is probably not the right time for this.  Save it for a more appropriate occasion.

1. Cosabella Marni Strapless Plunge Bra, $132.50, 2. Diane von Furstenberg Panel Marta Techno Jersey High Waist Pencil Skirt, $210, 3. Tuleste Market Layered Ball & Chain Necklace, $150, 4. Harrison Morgan Black Sequin Bolero, $220, 5. Christian Louboutin Pigalle 120 Patent Pumps, $595
