Girl Crush: Channeling Fran, the Flashy Girl from Flushing

By |March 29th, 2011|Celebrity Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

As previously stated, I’m a big fan of “classic” (um, is the 90’s now classic?) television.  One of my favorites is none other than The Nanny starring nasal voiced Fran Drescher.  While on the show she is portrayed as a tacky Jewish girl from Queens, if you look at Fran’s wardrobe, she’s really a trendsetter.  Don’t believe me?  Let’s just take a gander at the spring trends she’s sporting in the photos above:

  • Crop top. Check.
  • Florals. Check.
  • Animal Print. Triple check.
  • Stripes. Check.
  • Colorblocking. Check.
  • Flatforms. Ugh… Check.

Not so tacky now, is she?  A funny site I came across while doing my reconnaissance work for this post called, Should Be On the Nanny, pinpoints just how “on point” Fran was with her over the top outfits.  I often find myself sitting in front of the TV screen thinking one of two things: “I have that outfit” or “I need that outfit.”  If you, too, are channeling your inner girl from Flushing here are some Nanny-approved outfits to hop on your boss’s desk in:

1. Anne Klein New York Polka Dot Silk Georgette Blouse, $136.50, 2. Spring & Clifton Rumour Mini Skirt, $121, 3. Alice + Olivia Nicola Leopard Print Dress, $297, 4. Alice + Olivia Yoko Floral Flutter Sleeve Blouse, $275, 5. Truly Madly Deeply Mini Pencil Skirt, $32, 6. Jonathan Saunders Chilton Embellished Silk Mini Dress, $717.50, 7. bebe Neon Mesh Panel Dress, $129, 8. Theory Elizabeth Short Sleeved Turtleneck Top, $85, 9. Forever 21 Pretty Plaid Skirt, $19.80, 10. Asos Bandeau Leopard Jumpsuit, $53.79, 11. All Saints Mohan Leather Jacket, $395, 12. Report Signature Black Stretch Winston Platform Over the Knee Boots, $252, 13. Bettye Muller Caprice Wedges, $185, 14. Charlotte Olympia Miranda Leopard Platform Wedge, $902, 15. Friday Frocks: Shifty Little Lady

By |March 25th, 2011|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

A “mini” history lesson today.  A shift dress is a simple, short silhouette accented by darts on the front bust and a straight or slightly A-line hem.  The neckline is typically either a high boatneck or crewneck and there is no definition at the waist.   This very simple shift was first credited to Hubert de Givenchy as he designed most of Audrey Hepburn’s wardrobe- including that oh so iconic black shift she wore in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The dress was later made popular by Lilly Pullitzer when she wore the dress while selling fresh squeezed fruit juice (I’m not kidding) roadside in Palm Beach, Florida.  The image that comes to my mind, however, is Twiggy in a shift dress.  She was hired at 16 to model the shape for Mary Quant who had shortened the hemline to about six inches above the knee.

Despite the simplicity of this shape, it doesn’t work for every body.  Bigger busted ladies may have a harder time slipping into this shift.  It works best on boyish figures and is a fantastic choice for you ladies with great gams.

1. Rogan for Target Leopard Print Shift Dress, $39.99, 2. Missoni Paneled Zig Zag Knit Shift Dress, $1,600, 3. Ali Ro Stripe Knit Shift Dress, $206, 4. J. Crew Cotton Blend Shift Dress, $120, 5. Thakoon for Target Colorblock Shift Dress, $39.99, 6. Tibi Zip Back Ponte Shift Dress, $293, 7. Free People Colorblock Shift Dress, $138, 8. Milly Maggie Shift Dress, $370, 9. Jenni Kayne Zip Front Shift Dress, $595, 10. Michael Kors Leather Trim A-Line Canvas Shift  Dress, $1,495

Why Did You Wear That: Sucker Punched

By |March 25th, 2011|Celebrity Style|

I understand that fashion draws inspiration from everything around it, but when I saw the outfit donned by Jena Malone for the Suckerpunch premiere, I felt that this “inspiration” was more like “imitation.”  Please see below:

A). This proves I paid attention in art history, but more importantly it proves my point.  Jena Malone wants you to suckerpunch her clam… wait. No.  Jena wants to jam out with her clam out.  Ugh.  Jena’s a pearl… ?  What was my point?

Thoughts on Jena’s Botticelli-esque attire?

Girl Crush: Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?

By |March 23rd, 2011|Celebrity Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

My what big eyes you have… I’ve loved Amanda Seyfried since she played the dopey Karen Smith in Mean Girls alongside Lady Lohan, herself.  So what a perfect choice she was for the storybook turned mega movie, Red Riding Hood, released earlier this month.  With classic fairytale features, they couldn’t have cast a better beauty for little Ms. Hood.

It doesn’t take much for Amanda to look lovely.  With gigantic green eyes, perfectly porcelain skin, and hair that dreams were made of, it would really be hard for this stunning starlet to look bad.  Her red carpet style is simple, understated, and very sexy.  She knows her legs are her best feature and she isn’t afraid to show them off (smart girl).  During her downtime, Ms. Seyfried can be spotted around town with dog, Finn and her signature sunglasses.  Her style is always effortlessly chic.

1. American Apparel The Wool Cape, $170, 2. Ray-Ban XL Wayfarer, $145, 3. DOMA Detachable Hood Leather Jacket, $598, 4. Brian Atwood Lana Patent Peep Toe Pumps, $525, 5. Frederic Fekkai Brilliant Glossing Cream, $32, 6. Banana Republic Coy Combat Boot, $119.99, 7. Ralph Lauren Collection Ruffle Washed Linen Dress, $1,498, 8. Lanvin Plisse Dress, $1,975, 9. Benefit Dandelion, $28

…The better to see you with, my dear.

Why Did You Wear That: Hot Pants

By |March 22nd, 2011|Why Did You Wear That?|

Another trend from the oh so styling 70’s are the infamous hotpants.  While the originals are hardly suitable for public viewing, I’ve interpreted them into my own fashion.  I love denim, but how many different washes and cuts can you have before growing bored?  By adding some color to your denim game you can really switch things up.  Now your bottom isn’t the “neutral” and you’ve added an instant pop to any outfit.

Add a floral patterned top or a sheer neutral blouse to your “hot pants” to balance the bold.  A pair of strappy neutral or metallic high heeled (platform) sandals will finish off your look and have you doing the hustle in no time.

1. Rich & Skinny Bikini Flare Jeans, $156, 2. Rag & Bone Zipper Skinny Jeans, $198, 3. Dittos Skinny Suzie, $180, 4. Rich & Skinny Bikini Crop, $172, 5. Vince Five Pocket Skinny Pants, $225, 6. American Apparel Unisex Mineral Wash Stretch Bull Denim Slim Slack, $74

get down on it.
