Setting the Mood: … And Break.

By |March 4th, 2014|Setting the Mood|

spring break fashionYour definition of “spring break” doesn’t necessarily need to include a wet t-shirt contest and well tequila shot from a super soaker into your already inebriated mouth.  Sometimes the best kind of spring breaks are those spent with close friends in low key locations.  Sure, during my years as a co-ed I visited the obvious and oh so exotic locales of Aculpulco, Cancun, and Panama City, but never did I appear in a Girls Gone Wild DVD, nor did I awake in nothing but plastic beads.  I did, however, misplace my purse and nearly face a lifetime spent in Mexico without government ID.  But alas, UPS delivers to all of Northern America and I was returned home safely to two less than impressed parental units.  While my behavior south of the border was less than stellar, let’s just remember that I was far from bikini clad, AK47 holding, Riff Raff groupie, so I call that a “win.”  And why should we ditch the tradition once we’ve earned our undergraduate degrees?  Maybe, much like naps, spring break is a tradition that should span on throughout all of adulthood.

Beauty Buzz: Fresh Face- Spring 2014

By |February 27th, 2014|Beauty Buzz|

spring 2014 beautyIt’s probably difficult to even begin thinking about your spring beauty regimen with lips scratchier than sandpaper, snot encrusted nostrils and eyeballs that won’t.stop.watering.  I’ve basically thrown in the towel on a full face of makeup at this point… eyeliner is entirely out of the question unless I want to look like it’s the morning after while it’s still the night of.  Sure, the winter is brutal for beauty, but let’s not forget that there comes a point in New York ladies’ lives, say around July, wherein we give up on makeup altogether again as it will have run down our faces and right onto our blouses before we’ve even completed our commutes.  Therefore, spring is just about the only time where we can be playful with our makeup palette and anticipate our faces staying in place for most of the day.

The makeup and hair for spring this year was sort of divided into two camps.  While some designers like Michael Kors and Alexander Wang went for clean, fresh, bronzed barely there faces and “I woke up like this” hair, others like Rag & Bone painted lips and eyelids with bright pops of colors.  Most notably was blue for eyes and while red and berry lips were still very much trends, the most prevalent pout was lacquered up in orange.  This isn’t the first time we’ve seen orange lips on the runways and I’m still not sold, but perhaps you can make the look come across as something other than having housed a bag of Cheetos.  If you didn’t wake up with Olsen hair, a low sleek ponytail seen at Jason Wu or braided crown a la Naeem Khan are good ways to camouflage a potentially bad hair day.  Wide cloth headbands at Vera Wang as well as flowered accoutrements at Zac Posen adorned updos as well.  The cat eye remained strong.  So strong, in fact, that makeup artists continued the bold black liner all the way around the eyes.  And speaking of cat’s, claws were kept quite simple.  Many opted for soft shades accented with silver space age stripes and others chose the reverse French manicure, both proving that nail art is here to stay for at least another season.  So schedule your facials, ladies.  It’s time to prep your canvas for a very colorful spring. If you would like to look for great makeup find out here how to obtain it.

Setting the Mood: Spring Awakening

By |February 24th, 2014|Setting the Mood|

spring fashion trendsSpring equinox is less than a month away (March 2oth) and even though that sadistic groundhog, Phil, made us wait it out a little longer this year, there is light at the end of the proverbial tunnel.  That means, it’s time to shake off that winter way of thinking and dressing… and eating.  Before you know it, it’ll be time to start bitching about how hot it is, but in the meantime let us revel those few pleasant weeks of spring that remind us why we live in the best city in the world.  Judging by this past weekend’s “heatwave” that spawned dozens of pairs of bare legs to make their post polar vortex debut and the crowded streets on Sunday for boozy brunches (not to mention the rooftop at Soho House that resembled that of a Lorde music video shoot), it seems that the natives are restless and ready to shed winter’s layers.

Setting the Mood: Love Me Tender or Not So Much.

By |February 10th, 2014|Setting the Mood|

valentines dayThe only day in February with more unnecessary hype surrounding it than the first day of Fashion Week is Valentine’s Day.  While I’m love’s greatest champion even after all my crashing, burning, and broken hearts, Valentine’s Day gives me a little bit of anxiety.  Not really for myself so much as the rest of the general population.  My blackened heart basically makes me immune to the inevitable disappointment of people everywhere who dreamt up a day so romantic it would make Cinderella sick.  Without fail, plans fall apart, hearts get shattered, and mascara finds its way down tear stained cheeks.

Don’t believe me?  Check out a few of my Valentine’s Day massacres:

One year it was spent eating an entire box of red velvet cupcakes and crying with my gay best friend.  Did I mention the cupcakes had been meant for his date who canceled an hour before?

I once went through a breakup while seated next to my boyfriend turned ex boyfriend on an airplane on the way home from Los Angeles.  That was an awfully long flight.

And last year I really exceeded all of my bad decision making capabilities with a late night margarita fueled rendezvous.  That lead to an entire year of what some might consider an all around bad decision.  I’d actually like to thank the fine folks previously employed at Mole for having served us more tequila shots than there are days in February.

But it’s not all bad.  People have gotten engaged, met at single’s mixers, and lived out The Bachelor worthy dates.  So, let’s go with that.  While I’ll probably padlock myself indoors and surrender my iPhone to my doorman for the evening so as to avoid my apparent February 14th curse, you kids go out and have fun.

Setting the Mood: Sweat This.

By |February 3rd, 2014|Setting the Mood|

gym fashion editorialThey say summer bodies are made in the winter.  I can’t help but agree as I sweat myself silly at the gym.  There’s nothing more annoying to us gym rats than the people who show up in mid-May in sheer panic knowing that Memorial Day is right around the corner and they will be forced to slip into something more skimpy.  They’re kind of like the people who show up to the gym on January 2nd and last about a month.  I’m actually willing to wager they might be the same crowd.  You know the hardest part about going to the gym?  Actually going.  The second hardest part is figuring out how to look good without being the girl who looks like she got “ready” to go to the gym and walks on a treadmill texting with a full face of makeup and a fresh blowout (please don’t be that girl).  While I usually attempt to look totally unapproachable because there’s nothing I hate more than being hit on mid stride, it is entirely possible to look totally stylish while you sweat.
