My mom looks fantastic in a hat. Any kind. You name it- from bonnet to bucket- she works the look. She probably should have been British or born in the mid 18th century. Fortunately for me, I inherited that trait along with her side stitch inducing humor (am I right?). In this sizzling summer heat, you may not intuitively reach for a hat, but they are one more step in the right direction towards sun damage defense (more on that here). Setting the Mood: Get It, Sporty.

The other day I received a message asking how to get abs like mine. I’m not sure if she was expecting some magical answer like, “I house a bag of Cool Ranch Doritos dipped in Cool Whip before bed every night,” but she seemed a bit bummed out when I answered instead, “Pilates, yoga, and running.” This is not another installment of “You Did Not Eat That.” I actually do spend time sweating and while I did partake in National Ice Cream Day on Sunday, I am cognizant of what I put into my body on a regular basis. I don’t do it because I want to be thin, though that is a welcome side effect, I do it because I actually feel better when I’m not bombarding my intestines with ingredients I can’t pronounce… except for the occasional glass of wine from some far corner of the Earth that I just point to on the menu and smile. Sure, when I was in college I could sit down in front of the TV with a raging hangover and feed my frame an entire pizza without seeing the effects. But seeing as I’m no longer wielding a fake ID from Tennessee, my metabolism has given me the middle finger and shopping is most certainly not my cardio.

Setting the Mood: Who Wears the Pants?

High summer is probably not the time you think most of waking up, stretching those lanky limbs, and slipping into a pair of slacks. Much to many of my friends’ chagrin, my main motive when choosing my daily attire is to cover as little as possible with the thinnest layer of fabric conceivable all without contracting a ticket for public indecency. The caveat in all of this is my phobia of making bodily contact with many of the publicly shared spaces, ie., rash inducing velour seats of the Jitney descent or the unidentifiable, indestructible material of taxi cab cushions. Therefore, in the fear of revisiting a middle school incident of ring worm, there are times when covering up my gams is an absolute must. Fortunately, this summer, there are plenty of pants that don’t fall under the suffocating category of denim. Breezy wide leg pants in plenty of patterns are perfect for pairing with croptops and keeping the Center of Disease Control slightly less busy. And really, what’s the purpose of a pants of dance of if you’ve got no pants to lose?

Setting the Mood: The Dog Days of Summer

A phrase used to describe the “sultry” (more like sweaty) days of summer- July and August this side of the equator. And since I love summer and I most certainly love my darling dog, Smitty, this week will be dedicated mainly to the man who shares my bed, my heart, and sometimes my sandwich. Sure, I do love diamonds, but if you pressed me to honestly choose between karats and k-9’s, my pup would always reign supreme. Just ask all my ex-boyfriends.

memorial-day-fashion The unofficial start of summer, Memorial Day, is upon us (the official start of summer is June 21) wherein I realize I have been like the grasshoppers rather than ants all spring. Meaning, while everyone packs up their cars, boards the Luxury Liner or (shudder) the LIRR, I’m left waving goodbye and cursing myself for not having thought ahead to make plans or get a boyfriend. It’s not all a loss though, I won’t suffer through the hell that is Hamptons traffic and there is a pool two blocks away that will be potentially slightly less crowded. And just because I may be catching my Vitamin D all by my lonesome doesn’t mean I have to look like it. Perhaps I could even fool myself into believing that I’m on my own very exclusive private island called Manhattan. Setting the Mood: Land of the Free, Home of the Babes

Oh how quickly time flies. I remember last year’s Fourth of July as if it was yesterday. Much like I always do, I had put off making any actual plans for the holiday, but was fortunate enough to not be left entirely alone as one of my best girlfriends somehow landed herself in the city as well. To make the best of it, we got a picnic together, gathered our SPF, sunglasses, Whispering Angel, and towels and took them to the roof. We embraced the day and the sun listening to our favorite Pandora station while partaking in some serious girl talk. It wasn’t all stars and stripes for us though. As I was dodging irate phone calls from the guy I was seeing, basically threatening my life if I didn’t find a way to make it to New Hampshire on the next train (do trains even go to New Hampshire?), what appeared to be the set up for a rap video shoot complete with DJ and turntables arrived on my roof. Again, we attempted to make the best of our dire circumstances as my roof boasted the best view for fireworks that year. However, when we started being filmed without consent in our teeny bikinis, we packed up and I tried to book the next flight to Manchester. We never did see the fireworks.
