Setting the Mood: Garnet Girl

Not only is the garnet January’s gemstone, it also happens to be one of my favorite colors behind black, white and grey and closely followed by ballet pink. And wouldn’t you know, January just so happens to be my birth month. The deep red hue most often associated with garnets (did you know they could also be green, yellow, purple, and orange?) is a perfect shade for the chilly winter months. It looks great in everything from outerwear to accessories to your pouty little lips. It would appear that I’m not the only fan of the shade as it was quite popular at this year’s Golden Globes.

Setting the Mood: Vortex- The Escape

Happy Monday– and welcome, polar vortex. While literal deadly cold temperature descend on most of the country, the west coast seems to have been spared. So, I’ll leave out the fact that I’m writing this in my sports bra with the sliding glass doors open ’cause that would just be cruel. Speaking of complete and utter sadism, forcing one to leave the toasty confines of his or her home just to enter a few numbers in an excel sheet and return banal emails seems completely unreasonable. Sadly, not all executives share my exemplary work ethic and therefore many of you have braved the vortex bundled in winter’s bulkiest wares. And while you may think there’s no other way to survive such flesh freezing temperatures without resembling that of the Michelin Man in said puffer coat and Uggs, it is actually possible to look wonderful in a environment resembling less than a storybook Winter Wonderland.

Setting the Mood: Auld Lang Syne

Bad news? It’s Monday. Good news? It’s the last Monday you will have to slog through in 2013. I have mixed emotions when it comes to New Year’s Eve- mostly because of the pressure that people put on one night (the last night) of the year. In my personal/professional experience, the more weight put on the night, the more disappointing it usually turns out to be. Pretty sure FOMO reaches its peak every year on this day. I actually can’t recall the last December 31st that was drama free and TV movie perfect- although I did spend last year in West Virginia with my mom in a vintage sweatshirt jumpsuit and a crown. That was pretty fabulous. If you’re looking for a foolproof recipe for a festive NYE, try this: something sparkly + something bubbly+ people you love = a happy new year.

Setting the Mood: Private Parts

This time of year, especially around the holidays, plaid plays a very important role in winter wardrobing. Personally? I have a penchant for plaid. I went to plenty of private schools, St. Michael’s, St. Edward’s, and Linsly and maybe that’s where my love of plaid began. Many may beg to differ, but there’s nothing better than slamming the snooze button knowing that your outfit for school that day is predetermined, so you can afford a few more moments of shut eye. Honestly, there’s not a lot better than a good school uniform. For years, I was living out my very own Britney Spears Baby One More Time music video. Not really sure how the boys (or teachers) concentrated with pretty young things clad in pleated plaid skirts, knee socks, button downs, and blazers. The worst three years of my life were those spent in public school during my middle school years- not solely for the lack of uniform, because my closet actually quadrupled in size during that time. I may be the only adolescent on record who begged to go back. I’m pretty sure it appeared on my Christmas list two years running. While I did finally get my way, I still wax poetic about inappropriately short plaid skirts (I found myself in the office on more than one occasion for figuring out new and inventive ways to chop off a few inches from mine) and all the iterations of legwear and platform penny loafers. Fortunately, there are many ways that we can all relive our prep school pasts with grown up plaid pieces.

Setting the Mood: Happy Holla-Daze

While some of you were busy posing both literally and figuratively at Art Basel in Miami, I was busy dealing with personal crises and preparing this week’s posts chocked full of gift guides that will make your holiday shopping less painful than some of those exhibitions at Basel. Now that we’ve actually made it past Thanksgiving, it’s time to start thinking December 25th- not post Halloween like some of you overanxious overachievers thought. It’s no secret that Christmas music is like nails on the chalkboard to me, but I will appease my holly loving, twinkle light enthusiast, overly festive friends. So, get ready to stuff your stockings, kids.
