Why Did You Wear That: Love + Grace… and Smitty

By |May 30th, 2014|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

kirsten smith love grace3Contrary to popular belief, my Instagram feed, and my checking account, one of my favorite things to do is stay home and be alone… with Smitty.  Every once in a while I need some “me” time to refocus and reflect, to do all the work and mundane tasks- like bill paying and closet reorganizing that I’ve neglected and all but forgotten while out on the town with my fabulous friends.  Now and again I need a detox— from myself.  Even when I’m alone, I take pride in my appearance.  I mean, there are more than several mirrors strewn about my humble abode.  Even my antique dresser is reflective.  The only person I’m hurting by looking like a hot homeless mess when home alone is myself.  You see, I’m the type of gal who dabs on her favorite perfume before bed and let’s be clear, the only man sharing my bed is very hairy.  I like to feel good for myself, so when Love+Grace was kind enough to send over some PJ’s in the prettiest shade of pale pink, I could hardly wait to schedule a date with myself.  And that I did.  Made from the softest cotton that drapes and clings in all the right places, these pajamas are both comfortable and cute.  As I passed my full length mirror, prosecco in hand, I thought to myself, “Damn, it’s too bad I’m home all alone.”

Friday Frocks: Queen of the Night

By |May 30th, 2014|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

queen of the nightIt’s ironic that someone who spent the majority of her life obsessed with apparel and who threw her very first temper tantrum at the tender age of two over a pair of shoes would rather spend most of her time as an adult wearing as little as possible without catching a charge for indecent exposure.  But the moment the door clicks closed behind me, all bets are off and so are my clothes.  It should come as no surprise then, that when the summer heat kicks into full swing causing me to question whether or not I’m suffering from early menopausal hotflashes, that I will find any means possible to wear what might equate to a tissue’s amount of fabric as a frock.  I’ve been known to wear a nightie to a cocktail party and I don’t see why I should deprive the streets or the city from the same royal treatment… day or night

Beauty Buzz: Overnight Celebrity

By |May 29th, 2014|Beauty Buzz|

kirsten smith smittyAs women of the twenty first century, our responsibilities span far beyond those of merely managing a manor or being ladies in waiting sausaged in organ crushing corsets and starched petticoats on our front porches, sweet tea in delicate gloved hands.  We hold down high powered jobs, raise families, nurture romantic and platonic friendships, lead fruitful social lives and are expected to do so all while keeping up with societal (and sometimes completely unrealistic) beauty standards.  We barely have enough time to squeeze in a workout before fighting our way through our monotonous morning commutes, let alone pamper ourselves the way we definitely deserve having survived a 55 hour work week, complete with tyrant boss and tuna fish eating cube mate.  Since we are so great at multitasking all day long, why wouldn’t we craft up clever ways to put our beauty products to work while we cash in on those six holy hours of sleep before that dreaded alarm sounds and we do it all over again?  Along with slathering my eyelashes and lips with Aquaphor before bed every night (except when I’ve slipped into a wine induced coma), I also have discovered a slew of products designed specifically for all of us sleeping beauties.  And wouldn’t you know?  Sleep happens to be the perfect time to refresh, rehydrate, and recharge both inside and out.

Why Did You Wear That: Pajama Jam

By |May 28th, 2014|Why Did You Wear That?|

pajamas kirsten smithThough I rarely sleep with much on once the weather breaks from freezing, I have an overabundance of sleepwear.  As a matter of fact, for someone who would rather sleep with her window open for fresh air and sweat than turn on her air conditioner, it seems a bit excessive for the lack of closet and drawer space of New York studio apartments. Well Many times I used bridal pajamas for sleeping comfortably. Despite living in what is essentially a large hotel room, my apartment has become a bit of a hangout, probably due to its convenient location to trouble.  Upon entry everyone always comments on the number of rompers and nighties that hang from the doorknobs of my closet… which aren’t there merely for show, but because I’ve got a bit of a textile overpopulation problem. It just so happens that they look nice and add a little bit of color and femininity to my black and white abode.  My pajamas are mostly seen by my girlfriends who catch me between showering and dressing for the day, delivery men, and my neighbors across the street who have seen more than their fair share of me.  But alas, with summer weekend getaways and shared spaces, it’s probably best to have something to sleep in more modest than your birthday suit and slightly sweeter than your old ratty college t-shirt and pair of boxers that came from who knows where.

Setting the Mood: Beauty Sleep

By |May 27th, 2014|Setting the Mood|

fashion-sleeping-beautyFun fact: I’m narcoleptic.  Okay, maybe not clinically speaking, but show me a pillow and I’ll show you a coma.  I’m probably one of four people who has ever fallen asleep in Las Vegas… at a nightclub… with a giant costumed Elmo dancing right above her head.  If I were to be a fairytale princess, I would undoubtedly be Sleeping Beauty.  As a matter of fact, I should be much more beautiful due to the amount of beauty sleep I’ve amassed over the years.  I once had a boyfriend who told me that he was comforted by how restfully I slept.  He thought it meant I had a clear conscience.  Ha.  And while I’ve fallen asleep on dates forcing them to leave their phone numbers on tabloid covers and scraps of  napkin, my narcolepsy has saved me from many a late night pizza delivery.  So, my unpredictable sleep patterns aren’t all bad as long as you don’t mind my snoring.
