Friday Frocks: Pretty in Pastel

By |March 29th, 2013|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

pastel tea partyPastels and spring just seem to go together (kind of like champagne and orange juice) and seeing as this weekend we are breaking fifty degrees in Manhattan, it finally feels like spring has arrived.  Whether you’re putting on your Easter bonnet or celebrating Passover, a pastel frock is right on trend for this season.  Muted mint, dusty pink, or light lavender are flattering shades for even the most sun deprived skin.  So, grab your mimosa and settle down for Sunday brunch in something pretty and pastel.

Setting the Mood: Pastel Me Again

By |March 25th, 2013|Setting the Mood|

pastel inpsiration boardPunxsutawney Phil may be getting sued, but technically speaking, spring is upon us.  And speaking of groundhogs, one trend for spring that is making a repeat appearance is pastel.  Everything from shoes to shades to even hair is taking on the hues of your favorite summer sunset or bag of Sweet Tarts… whichever you prefer (but really, why choose?).  So get your girly girl on by stepping into spring’s sweetest trend, but remember, just like downing that entire bag of Sweet Tarts, there is such a thing as too much of a good thing.  Except for sunsets.  There can never be enough sunsets.

Beauty Buzz: Fifty Shades of… Tan

By |March 21st, 2013|Beauty Buzz|

self tanner before afterA couple of weekends ago as I sat across from my male companion, he commented how he missed the freckles that occupy my nose and cheeks during the summer months.  They are one of his favorite things about me, though I’m sure it was hard to choosel.  Funny enough, I miss them too.  As a little girl I tried my darndest to get rid of them.  I slathered on buttermilk, lemon juice, basically anything the women of classic literature did to keep their bosoms milky.  That’s when it occurred to me- I was starting to look like an extra from Twilight.  Should I even be out in daylight?

Rather than actually expose my skin to harmful UV rays, especially since recent studies have found that tanning beds are even more harmful than initially thought and a trip somewhere south isn’t currently in the cards (I only fly private) I needed to fake the flavor.  But man oh man, the stench of self tanner.  The streaky sometimes creamsicle results.  Maybe being Casper’s cousin isn’t so bad?  That’s when I was halfway through a spoon full of peanut butter and an episode of Nashville a commercial for Jergens new formula of gradual tanning lotion came on.  Now, not only did Jergens claim to give you a “natural glow” but it promised to do so without the telltale self tanner scent.  I was intrigued.

So, as soon as I mustered up enough energy to trot on over to Duane Reade, I picked up a tube to give it a go.  So, let’s just get right down to what I’m sure is the only part you actually care to know.  To call this “odorless” might be a bit of a stretch, HOWEVER, the the smell was far less offensive to the olfactories than previous formulas and other brands I’ve tried.  I actually would say it’s safe to wear in public and around other humans with senses of smell so long as you don’t take part in a heated dance off as that is sure to crank up the fragrance.  Just guessing, not speaking from personal experience…

As far as color goes, it’s what’s to be expected from a self tanner… though I only use this lotion every other day and am sure to follow up on ankles, knees, and elbows with a standard moisturizer so as to prevent creepy overly orange areas.  Bottom line?  This is a fantastic way to get you through the last few chilly weeks sans sun, unless, of course, you’ve got a private plane– in which case, can I come? Why Did or Why Don’t: Let It Burn

By |March 20th, 2013|Why Did or Why Don't?|

break up skywritingStop me if you’ve heard this one before: Boy meets girl.  Boy and girl fall in love.  Boy and girl break up.  Girl proceeds to ruin boy’s life.  They say hell hath no fury like a woman scorned… and I happen to know there’s a bit of truth to that.  Not that I’ve ever gone all Carrie Underwood on anyone… well, except that one time, but in this day and age, breakups and their pretty personal details have become quite public.

For instance, the adorable Selena Gomez stopped by David Letterman this week where she was promoting Spring Breakers and dropping bombs on Justin Bieber.  During the interview, Gomez  points out something she and Letterman happen to have in common and it’s a real zinger.  She delivers the line so subtly and sweetly that it’s hard not to want to give her daps, but is dissing your ex publicly awesome or just kind of immature?

Now, I’m no Wizard of Waverly Place, but clearly, I have a very public vehicle for the purpose of spot blowing.  Fortunately for the past loves of my life, I have an almost incomprehensible amount of restraint when it comes to dishing out the deets of what exactly went down during our time together.  (You’re all very welcome).  However, there are certainly times I have most definitely wanted to lay the story perfectly straight for my love life spectators and perhaps help a sister out in the process.  As a matter of fact, my ex’s ex (we following that?) is the producer for a very popular morning radio show.  While she and her cohorts did make some commentary regarding her breakup (at which point I received some pretty unpleasant Tweets from their fans), the references were somewhat vague.  Looking back, I wish she’d just been blunt about the level of douchedom that went down or that I had just gone ahead and called into the show myself.  Sure would have saved me some time.

So what do we think?  Acceptable to ruin someone’s day publicly?  Or totally tacky?

It’s not me, it’s you.

Why Did You Wear That: Work It, Girl.

By |March 19th, 2013|Why Did You Wear That?|

whydid workoutDespite the clumps of half melted snow on the sidewalk and being pelted by sleety raindrops the moment you step foot outside your door, “spring” is only a day away.  Typically, this would signal oncoming warm weather and the switch from snow boots to skimmers.  However, by the looks of things, we’ve got a little while longer to spend in the gym sweating to the oldies before shedding the layers and revealing our soft summer skin. (Punksatony, we’re reviewing your contract right now).  So instead of drowning our sorrows in baked mac n’ cheese, let’s take advantage of the opportunity to shed a couple of those extra LB’s we packed on during winter hibernation because those are not the “lumps” they were talking about when they said lovely lady lumps.

While I do have a very difficult time spending ninety dollars on a pair of pants I’m simply going to sweat in, you also don’t have to look like a tool on the treadmill, you should get the best SoleHeaven trainers to have style when working out.  Fortunately, workout wear has taken a turn towards stylish and now we can find great options by just visiting websites like https://www.ryderwear.com/collections/womens-sports-bras.  Take a cue from these on trend gym approved styles and feel the burn.  Just remember, your workout clothes are not street clothes.  Lulu leggings are still leggings, so please don’t sit down at brunch post downward dog next to me.  I don’t want cameltoe with my croissant.
