Beauty Buzz: Blushing Beauty
Written by: WhyDid | Beauty Buzz

peach cheeks spring 2012The runways were taken over with peachy perfect complexions for Spring 2012.  Everyone from Michael Kors to Preen sent their lovely ladies down the catwalk with cheeks juicier than Georgia peaches.  That means that peachy cheeks are certain to be on trend this spring.  Does that mean I have to ditch my beloved Benetint?  (Um, never).  But in the off chance that I wanted to trade in my typical flushed cheeks for something a bit softer, I went out and purchased Tarte’s Amazonian Clay 12 Hour Blush in Blissful.

Peach Blush

Tarte Amazonian Clay 12 Hour Blush in Blissful, $25

The color is true to the packaging and is also totally buildable,  So, does it last twelve hours?  Meh… not so much.  You  may need a 3 o’clock touch up (kinda like that 3 o’clock coffee break) to revive the color, but I would absolutely recommend this nutrient rich, perfect shade of peach to capitalize on one of this spring’s prettiest makeup trends.

Beauty Buzz: Brow Down
Written by: WhyDid | Beauty Buzz

famous eyebrowsLong gone are the days of over tweezed and drawn on eyebrows.  The full brow is back and better than ever as seen on the Spring 2012 runways.  Everyone from Naeem Khan to Derek Lam channeled their Brooke Shields a la The Blue Lagoon. In seasons past, the bleached brow had made an appearance, but this spring, it’s all about the statement making power brow.

filled in brows I suffer from having fairly light and fairly thin eyebrows naturally, so I have to fill them in just to make ‘em look normal using  Tarte’s EmphasEYES brow pencil in Taupe on a day to day basis.   Rosie Huntington Whitely swears by Laura Mercier’s Brow Powder.  It’s time to find your power tool for banging brows.  The look is full, groomed, and face framing.  It is also important to find the right shape for your face as well.  I have found that just having a groomed brow makes me immediately appear more polished and adds an extra impact to my eyes.

brow enhancers1. Anastasia Beverly Hill Beauty Express for Brows and Eyes, $39.50, 2. Laura Mercier Brow Powder Duo, $24, 3. Amazing Cosmetics Brow Gel, $14, 4. Tarte EmphasEYES For Brows, $19.50, 5. Too Faced Cosmetics Brow Envy Kit, $35, 6. Revlon Colorstay Brow Enhancer, $7.74

Why Did You Wear That: Oh Lola!

Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins.  My sin, my soul.

“Lolita” is a term that is often thrown around without much thought.  It’s used in songs, slang, and even runway collections.  I hesitated on this post due to the sensitivity of the literal interpretation.  In case you haven’t read the book (didn’t I tell you to read the book?), it would be prudent to tread lightly seeing as the original usage would lean towards what some would consider pedophilia.  But let’s not go down that road…  Who needs to be that literal anyway?

Instead let’s go with the more watered down, more Hollywood, more commonly accepted and completely legal understanding of Lolita… the girlish flirt.  Le petite coquette.  That undeniable, unintentional, irresistible charm.  We all have a little Lolita in us, afterall.

lolita playgroundI’m many years past my prime as a nymphet, but I still embrace the feminine wile.  This modern day translation of little Lola is flirtatious and feminine, but far from a schoolgirl. It should evoke a feeling of simultaneous innocence and omnipotence.  If all else fails, throw on a pair of heart shaped sunglasses.

 1. Cathy Daniels Floral Sweater, $20, 2. Halston Heritage Accordion Pleated Chiffon Mini Skirt, $265, 3. Sam Edelman Scarlett T-Strap Sandal, $199.95, 4. Urban Outfitters Sweetheart Sunglasses, $14, 5. Tarte emphasEYES Inner Rim Eyeliner, $18, 6. Free People Mesh Dot Ankle Socks, $14, 7. Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick in Are You Red-dy, $7.49

Oh my, Lolita, I have only words to play with!

Gift Guide: Glamour Girl
Written by: WhyDid | Gifts

Oh yes, it’s that time of year again.  Not only is it time to crank up the heat and hibernate, it’s also time to spend money we may or may not have on gifts for people who may or may not appreciate them.  I’m kidding, I’m kidding.  Everyone with a soul appreciates a thoughtful and gracious gift.  So, in the off chance that you do have any money left after Brown Thursday, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday, it’s time to start WhyDid’s Holiday Gift Guides.  I don’t mean to toot my own horn (beep beep) but I’m pretty great at gift giving.  Is that something I can add to my resume?

Let’s start with the toughest on the list, shall we?  There’s always that one person who has (or at least wants) everything.  We all know someone like her.  Hell, she may even be you.  Why not please your fickle friend with something shiny?  Something sparkly.  Something so glamourous she couldn’t possibly turn up her perfect little nose at your offerings.

1. Bond No. 9 New York The Swarovski All Stars Quartet, $700, 2. Diane Kordas Black Diamond Embellished 18K Rose Gold Bracelet, $810, 3. Kiki de Montparnasse Fucking Beautiful Ring, $950, 4. Kiki de Montparnasse Je T’aime Ring, $895, 5. D.L. & Co. Black Dahlia Candle, $75, 6. Kara Ross Prunella Glitter Envelope Clutch, $650, 7. NARS Arabian Nights Trio Eyeshadow, $45, 8. Miu Miu Jewel Heel Glitter Platform Sandal, $990, 9. Tarte The Starlet Limited Edition Makeup Vanity, $52

Phew!  Check her off the list.

Beauty Buzz: Give Some Lip
Written by: WhyDid | Beauty Buzz

kerstin-lipsSo, as girly as I am, there are two things that I just can’t seem to keep a handle on. Lipstick and nail polish. I’ve mentioned before that my nails are chipped more often than not. To go along with that, I really just CAN’T be bothered with applying and reapplying lipstick. I once tried one of those “long wearing” red lipsticks and was horrified that halfway through the night I looked like I’d sucked the blood from a baby pig (or just a reject from the next Twilight installment). This is why you’ll probably only catch me with some lipgloss, chapstick, or nothing on my lips.

For a while I was happy using Benetint for double duty on both lips and cheeks, but despite the berry stained color, it did nothing to moisturize my lips. So while perusing Sephora (that place is dangerous) waiting to meet up with friends for an afternoon cocktail, I stumbled upon something brilliant from Tarte:

6a00e5504d1b2f88330128778c9f34970c-800wiTarte Natural Lip Stain with LipSurgence, $24

This little gem combines both a stain with a moisturizing technology called Lipsurgence (6000% increase in lip moisture!) and is completely free of parabens and sulfates.  I picked “Charmed” which appeared to be a very light pink. (I tested it on the back of my hand). It has a minty scent/taste (not sure which?), and glides on smooth. I must warn you, the color is much more saturated on the lips, so I was more bubblegum pink than sheer pink. I suggest testing on your lips before purchasing. My lips stayed smooth and moisturized for a lot longer than lipgloss and even chapstick, not to mention that the color certainly does last (so make sure you like the color!). I use it all the time despite the Barbie pink shade. My girlfriend laughed at me while wearing it during our run on the Hudson the other day. Whatevs, you never know who you’ll meet!
