Friday Frocks: Sweater Dressing

By |October 25th, 2013|Friday Frocks|

To me, there is no better thing than being able to look pulled together while feeling as if you are lounging in your oldest holiest sweats.  The perfect way to achieve this style nirvana is by acquiring a sweater dress… or many of them.  Be it cashmere, merino wool, or cotton blend, sweater dresses come in all shapes, colors, and patterns making it quite possible to wear one each and every day of the week.  Perfectly suited for a day at the office or a weekend brunch with friends, this knit number is as versatile as it is comfortable.  With tights, over the knee boots, and a leather jacket, no one will ever accuse you of being frumpy.

Setting the Mood: Don’t Sweater The Technique

By |October 21st, 2013|Setting the Mood|

sweatersIt’s easy to get melancholy over the falling leaves and temperatures when autumn rolls around.  It’s stayed strangely warm this year, but it’s merely a matter of time before you are going to be swaddled in cashmere and merino.  I may be biased having spent a portion of my professional life in knitwear, but there is not much I love more than a giant cozy sweater.  With destroyed denim, sleek leather, or simple legwear, knitwear is nothing less than versatile.  Embrace the chill and find yourself a cozy sweater to snuggle up in.

Friday Frocks: I Can Love You Sweater.

By |October 5th, 2012|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

oversize sweaterBy now, it should be clear how I feel about knitwear.  Cardigans, pullovers, hats, and gloves.  My favorite piece of knitwear, however, is the sweater dress.  By far one of the most versatile pieces of the autumnal season, it can be worn alone with a great pair of boots, with tights when the brisk breeze turns to a crisp chill, and over leggings when the snow plows start to rumble through the streets.  A slouchy, soft sweaterdress is the equivalent of an oversized boyfriend shirt.  It’s comfortable, easy, and altogether chic.  It also has the overwhelming effect of making you look completely cuddly and I cannot be held responsible if handsome strangers have the overwhelming urge to hug you when wearing one.

Setting the Mood: Sweater Weather

By |October 1st, 2012|Setting the Mood|

sweater inspiration board

I may have spent my childhood growing up in Florida, but I always had an attraction to too all things knitwear.  I remember wishing the thermometer would dip below sixty so I could find good reason for wearing sweaters so carefully selected by my doting grandma (Mee Maw), who lived up north and must’ve thought that even her granddaughter in the Sunshine State might catch cold without the proper attire.  I recall one sweater specifically.  It was a kelly green number embellished with some type of gold coin like discs that I wore as a tunic over a pair of black and white houndstooth stirrup (yes, stirrup) leggings.  See, even as an adolescent I knew the difference between leggings and pants.

As an adult, I had the privilege of taking my sweater obsession even further when I worked in knitwear product development for Henri Bendel’s famously fabulous cashmere.  I now know more about weaves, wefts, and fibers than I’d like to admit.  So, while there is a small window where we, northerners, will enjoy all that is fall before we trade in our cardigans for sleeping bag coats, I can’t deny my delight in draping myself in cozy cashmere and lofty knits.

Why Did You Wear That: Fair Well, My Friend.

By |September 29th, 2010|Why Did You Wear That?|

So, here’s your mini history lesson for the day, fair isle is a knitting technique used to create patterns using different colors. The technique is named after a small island off the coast of Scotland and became popular after the Prince of Wales sported the knitted vests all the way back in 1921. See? So much smarter and you’re only two sentences in!

I remember sitting in a design meeting two years ago discussing fairisle… so I’m happy to see that it eventually caught on to the masses. While this style probably used to remind you of your grandmother, it is so far from frumpy.
