Why Did You Wear That: Patent Pending

By |October 24th, 2016|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

gempicket-patent-leather-pantsNever did I ever think I’d see the day I’d be sliding myself into a pair of patent leather pants, let alone the matching patent leather bralette.  But the moment I did, I felt like a whole new woman.  Gone was the mild mannered, happy little wallflower, and here emerged someone looking to stir up a little controversy.

Gempicket‘s Audrey Sleepless Bra and Pants somehow make wearing manmade material seem elegant and even sophisticated.  Sure, these pieces have the potential to take a totally wrong turn and should be handled with caution– much like a semi automatic weapon.  The contrast of delicate lace against patent leather and the high neckline countering the near nudity create a perfect paradox.

On my way to the shoot location, I wore a pair of Adidas Stan Smith sneakers to avoid injury and eliminate extra time spent teetering along the cobblestones of the far West Village and realized how cool these pants would also look in a very laid back setting- dare I say Saturday brunch with a vintage t-shirt and denim jacket?  Upside?  Spilled mimosas wipe right off.

Patent leather is having a moment this season, which is ironic as my first tantrum was thrown over the very same material and the only shoes (I had from shoe hero) Smitty ever chewed were also patent leather.  Fits of rage and oral fixations aside, find a way to incorporate it into your closet whether full pants, mini skirt, or even a Julia Roberts boot, you can wear a special jewelry piece, from this large selection of antique jewellery.

Friday Frocks: Hot Under the Collar

By |December 27th, 2013|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

collared dresses peter pan saint laurentOne of the most noteworthy numbers sent down this Fall ’13’s runways was the plaid Peter Pan collared frock from Saint Laurent.  Encapsulating just enough of the 90’s grunge while maintaining the sweetness of a babydoll silhouette, this dress becomes a classic contradiction.  Valentino and Louis Vuitton also sent very similar styles down the catwalk.  A perfect day to night dress that will transition effortlessly from cubicle to club by trading in flat boots for spiky Mary-Janes or strappy pumps, letting your hair loose and cranking up the smokey eye.  A perfect perfect mixture of sugar and spice- ain’t that nice?

Friday Frocks: Lil Bit of This, Lil Bit of That

By |November 8th, 2013|Friday Frocks|

Every woman, no matter her age, lifestyle, or body type must own the perfect LBD.  At times, a simple black frock can seem a bit dull, but there are some easy ways to add interest to an otherwise standard staple.  To avoid falling flat, texture can be a crucial part of keeping your LBD from being run of the mill.  Leather, lace, or a combination of the two will take you from standard to standout.  In a classic shape or something more au courant, the basic little black dress has never looked better.

Setting the Mood: Goth Goes Glam

By |September 30th, 2013|Setting the Mood|

You know what’s spooky?  Tomorrow is the first day of October.  I’m not quite sure where the time goes.  Hell, I hardly know what day of the week it is more often than not.  And not only is summer absolutely over, we’re fully in the midst of fall.  While the weather has been nothing short of heavenly for the past month, it’s only a matter of time before I lock myself away like a hermit to avoid the bitter chill of winter.  But before I make off like Winslow Homer, I may as well enjoy the last few brisk days of autumn.  Sure, my summer tan has all but faded, but now is no better time to bask in my alabaster skintone and take on the look of glamorous goth.  The word “goth” probably evokes memories of that one kid in your gifted class who never spoke much and spent a lot of time doodling pentagrams on his Trapper Keeper.  However, the modern goth is a bit more polished and much more high fashion than Halloween.  I believe I outgrew Halloween when they started making costumes like “sexy bacon” and “naughty neurosurgeon.”  Think textures of leather, lace, and velvet and smokey eyes with a deep plum lip.  Just remember: the look should be sultry, not scary.
