Ever have one of those mornings where you wake up with a smile on your face only to have the gut crashing realization that the day before (and your current reality) was a complete and utter disaster?  Oh yeah.  I’m having one of those.  While I certainly don’t know the answer to everything, I do know two things quite intimately: 1. There is such a thing as too many mimosas, and 2. You have no one but yourself to blame for making the same mistakes time and again.

To perk up my less than perfect disposition, I’ve gathered together a few of my favorite things to remind myself, “Hey, life’s not so bad.”  Some of those best things are free (it’s true what they say), while others may break the bank (a girl can dream, right?).  So, this is a semi-self-centered post, but I suspect you may be smitten with some of my obsessions as well.

And while you may not be able to wake up from this terrible dream, at least you’ll have other things to smile about.

Setting the Mood: Turn it Down

By |June 4th, 2012|Setting the Mood|

muted color paletteWell, in case you were wondering, neon is a HUGE trend for summer.  So huge, in fact, that I’m already over it.  Having arrived back in New York, I could not believe how much neon I saw on the gorgeous girls of Manhattan.  It wasn’t just a matter of a bright sighting here and there… It was more like packs of girls who looked like a pack of highlighters.  Each lovely lady clad in a dayglow shade.  Well, I knew I’d had enough when I, myself, was sporting a tank top as bright as the highlighted passages in my summer reading.  Everywhere I looked, someone else was wearing a similar style.  I wanted to hide, but it’s awfully difficult to be inconspicuous when sunglasses are needed just to take a gander in my direction.

So what better antidote to neon than the muted shades of a summer sky?  For once, being subdued will be what makes you stand out.

Setting the Mood: Beach Blanket Bingo

iconic bikinis Next to being naked, there’s nothing I’d rather be wearing than a bikini.  Quite strange coming from someone who writes about clothes on a daily basis- the irony is not lost on me.  I don’t know what started it.  Perhaps that “Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini” dance recital number?  I have more bathing suits than one probably should (and could) ever possibly wear.  I can’t stop my retail impulses when I spot a perfect two piece. And my love affair with swimwear doesn’t stop with string bikinis.

These ladies wearing some of the most iconic bathing suits prove that a bikini doesn’t necessarily have to be teeny and a bathing suit doesn’t have to be all T & A to be sexy.

Seeting the Mood: Flower Power

By |May 7th, 2012|Setting the Mood|

flower mood boardAre we done?  Are we done with those April showers?  Cause you’ve been awfully temperamental this year, Ms. Nature.  I don’t really know what your problem is, but it’s May and you promised flowers.  And I’m going to hold you to that.

What girl doesn’t like receiving or at least admiring fresh flowers?  The answer is a cold hearted one.  Remember when Lady Malks, taught us what our favorite flowers said about us?  I think there’s a lot to be said about your taste in flora and fauna.  Granted, I’ve rarely met a flower I didn’t like.  Although there are a few flowers that I just can not (will not) tolerate.  Carnations and gerber daisies – the cantaloupe of flowers.  Why don’t you just send me an Edible Arrangement?

Well, anyway, flowers aren’t just for sniffing anymore.  This year, there’s a plethora of ways to wear your florals, having you looking fresh as a flower (not a daisy).

Setting the Mood: On a Roll

By |April 30th, 2012|Setting the Mood|

disco roller skating(You may want to go ahead and turn up this past weekend’s playlist to feel the full effect of this installment of Setting the Mood).

Planning a party for a friend is a lot of work, but also a lot of fun.  While there are lots of intricate details like finding the perfect venue, picking a theme, cupcakes or cake?, and making sure there are plenty of party props, one of the most difficult tasks may be figuring out what to wear.  While doing some research on what exactly made the 70’s and disco era tick, I found that perhaps I showed up during the wrong decade.  With an excess of sparkle and shimmer and an overall sense of carefree ease, these groovy gals really had it figured out.  Throw in some rollerskates and feathered hair a la Farrah Fawcett and you’re all set.
