Beauty Buzz: Overnight Celebrity

kirsten smith smittyAs women of the twenty first century, our responsibilities span far beyond those of merely managing a manor or being ladies in waiting sausaged in organ crushing corsets and starched petticoats on our front porches, sweet tea in delicate gloved hands.  We hold down high powered jobs, raise families, nurture romantic and platonic friendships, lead fruitful social lives and are expected to do so all while keeping up with societal (and sometimes completely unrealistic) beauty standards.  We barely have enough time to squeeze in a workout before fighting our way through our monotonous morning commutes, let alone pamper ourselves the way we definitely deserve having survived a 55 hour work week, complete with tyrant boss and tuna fish eating cube mate.  Since we are so great at multitasking all day long, why wouldn’t we craft up clever ways to put our beauty products to work while we cash in on those six holy hours of sleep before that dreaded alarm sounds and we do it all over again?  Along with slathering my eyelashes and lips with Aquaphor before bed every night (except when I’ve slipped into a wine induced coma), I also have discovered a slew of products designed specifically for all of us sleeping beauties.  And wouldn’t you know?  Sleep happens to be the perfect time to refresh, rehydrate, and recharge both inside and out.

Beauty Buzz: Find the Light

By |December 18th, 2013|Beauty Buzz|

metallic eye makeupDuring the holidays and especially with New Year’s Eve quickly creeping ’round the corner, some of us look for ways to amp up our standard makeup routines for swanky evenings out on the town and special seasonal celebrations.  Some may opt for the classic statement making bold lip (good choice) and others go for the more “Golden Girl” approach (also a great choice).  But beauty beware: there is a big difference between glowing like the lights of Paris (the city, not the socialite) and glaring like the neon signs of Las Vegas.  Let’s keep glitter where it belongs: on art projects, Halloween costumes and strippers.  Strippers can wear glitter.

Come to think of it, a guy I was dating once showed up late one night after work, which should have been reason enough to dump him, but he was covered in glitter.  Seeing as he doesn’t work at a Michael’s craft store, he must have procured his shimmering accents somewhere.  Hanging out with another lady is bad enough but, hanging out with another lady who dons glitter is grounds for permanent exile.  But I digress…

To achieve a glowing holiday look, invest in a few beauty products with flecks not flakes of shimmer in them.  You could go for a dramatic foil for your lids, a metallic manicure or something as simple as adding some extra shine to your tresses.  Be sure not to go overboard with your gilded look though.  A gorgeous glow is one thing, but looking like a greased up walrus won’t get your dance card filled up any faster… if at all.

Setting the Mood: Like a Fine Wine

By |December 5th, 2011|Setting the Mood|

Here’s something that may come as a shock to you.  Brace yourselves.  I enjoy wine.  I enjoy it so very much that I’ve decided to dedicate this entire post to it.  What?  That post(s) about Napa didn’t tip you off?  There’s nothing quite like unwinding with your favorite glass of wine after a long day (as long as you’re of legal age, of course).  Beyond that giddy delight you feel after a glass (or two) of vino, this nectar of the gods also has some health benefits that may interest you (and justify that last glass).  Red wine is high in antioxidants and a lil’ somethin’ somethin’ called resveratrol, which helps reduce “bad cholesterol.”  I’m not the only one privy to this knowledge though.  Beauty brands have harnessed the super powers of grapes to create products that will make you look as good as you feel… and they won’t leave you with a pesky hangover.  If you really want to douse yourself in wine, try wearing the hue of a beautiful bordeaux or classic cabernet- perfect for the holiday season.  (Bonus: you won’t see any unsightly spills- not that you would ever spill).

And yes, as a matter of fact, I am drinking a glass of pinot noir as I type this.

In vino veritas!
