Why Did You Wear That: Thankful for Crop Tops

By |November 27th, 2013|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

kirsten smithIf I could wear this outfit or an iteration of it every single day, I probably would.  Basically, if I was a superhero, this would be my costume.  I’d have a closet full of the exact same thing just like Doug Funny.  I’m not exactly sure what kind of superhero or cartoon character I would be, but I think one of my superpowers would be being able to see private Instagram accounts.  To me this feels a little bit like a mixture between Pretty Woman and Cat Woman.

Yes, I’ve found another way to incorporate a crop top into my wardrobe, this being more of a “girls’ night out” version and probably not something that I’d be wearing post Thanksgiving dinner with my compressed socks you can buy at this website link.  So I’ll just try and remember that when Thursday rolls around and there’s a plate full of food in front of my fat face.  But perhaps another one of my superpowers might be a super metabolism.

Why Did You Wear That: Back to Basics

By |October 23rd, 2013|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

kirsten smithI like to keep things simple.  (K.I.S.S.).  I find that many women spend  (or waste) a lot of time overcomplicating their outfits.  The fact of the matter is, most women dress for other women.  We think we’re dressing for ourselves, but let’s be honest- we’re really just trying to look badder than the babe next to us.  The thing is, all the hours spent fussing over the latest and greatest trends can’t be taken back.  Sometimes, it’s best to just stick to the basics.

When a friend of mine, who I never get to see– especially when he snags a girlfriend– told me he was nearby and inquired if I was around to grab a drink (when am I not?), I plucked myself from my seat on the couch and promptly closed my computer.  I had to get ready quickly and rather than stand in front of my closet scratching my head and cursing my entire wardrobe, I picked out two items that go together better than Snooki and JWow.  Jeans and a white tank.  There really is no way to go wrong with a perfectly fitting pair of jeans and a basic white top.  Spice up a seemingly boring outfit with a detailed denim and add interest with your shoes and handbag.  There’s a reason some things are called classics.

Why Did You Wear That: For the Birds

By |March 6th, 2012|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

striped dress bird bathEveryday around the same time, a flock of birds shows up at this little bird bath.  I’m not talking like one or two.  I am talking about ten to twenty at a time.  It’s like birds gone wild at spring beak (too many fowl puns?).  Something about this little bird bath seemed very French to me.  I’m not sure why.  Do they even have birds (les oiseaux) in France?  Doesn’t matter.  It seemed like a perfect place to put on one of my favorite knit dresses with wedge booties and beret and channel my inner French girl.  While it’s been abnormally warm, the air does start to chill when the sun goes down.  That’s why it’s imperative to always have a jacket and scarf on hand.  Cherry nails and lips are the perfect accents for an all black and white ensemble.

Look for Less: Leather and Legs

By |December 11th, 2011|Look for Less, Why Did You Wear That?|

A way to bring a little edge to any outfit is by adding a bit of leather.  If a leather jacket feels too predictable and leather pants just really aren’t going to happen, a leather skirt may be a great way to incorporate this trend.  Whether you winterize your look with a cozy sweater and opaque tights or sport a bare leg and sky high heels, be sure to mix in a more modest top.  You don’t want to look like a lady who belongs on a corner of Hollywood Boulevard.  Check out these three leather looks worn by some fresh faced celebrities:

1. Juicy Couture Candy Pink Cotton Lace Top, $110, 2. Andrew Marc Tristina Leather Skirt, $350, 3. Emitations Flora’s Sterling Silver Heart Charm Bracelet, $75, 4. Report Stamos Patent Pumps, $56.99

1.  By Malene Birger Luvina Lace Blouse, $224, 2. Naven Biker Skirt, $154, 3. Urban Outfitters Sheer Tights, $12, 4. White House Black Market Rosette Clutch, $34, 5. TopShop Galleria Patent Mary Janes, $92

1. Qi Cashmere Long Time Ruched Turtleneck, $147, 2. Schumacher Faux Leather Skirt, $319, 3. Tarte LipSurgence in Charmed, $24, 4. Mod Cloth Tights for Every Occasion, $14.99, 5. Frye Harlow Oxford Bootie, $197.95
