Beauty Buzz: Hide… Don’t Seek.

By |May 30th, 2013|Beauty Buzz|

For years, I’d basically given up on finding a good concealer.  When a not so friendly facial visitor would set up shop on my face, I just tried to blend it as best I could then play a little game of smoke and mirrors by piling on the Benetint and upping the eyeliner.  I found that most concealers ended up making blemishes look that much more noticeable– like, literally making a mountain out of a molehill.   Then one fateful evening before a first date, I peered into the mirror in horror.  I was either growing a pimple directly between my brows or I was finally turning into a unicorn.  Turns out it was the former.  I didn’t really have time to perform “surgery” on it, so I checked to see what samples I had lying around.  Well, as luck would have it, I had a teeny tube of Miracle Skin Transformer Treat & Conceal.  A tiny dab on my pesky pimple and au revoir!  No one would be the wiser.  So, next time another blemish decides to make an appearance, I’m fully armed and it won’t set me back a month’s rent like the cult favorite from Cle de Peau.

And for the record, the only one who got lucky that evening was me… for finding my new favorite concealer.

Beauty Buzz: Poolside Packing

By |May 23rd, 2013|Beauty Buzz, Why Did You Wear That?|

You’ve packed your weekender, polished your fingers and toes and gotten that dreaded Brazilian (you have, haven’t you?) Get thyself to a waxer, woman.  The next hurdle you’ll face over the holiday weekend is preparing the perfectly equipped beach bag.  There’s nothing worse than trotting all the way down to the beach, finding the perfect spot and then realizing you forgot your sunscreen.  That’s a valuable fifteen minutes of Vitamin D and boyscouting that you’ll be missing while fetching your forgotten goods.  Below I’ve created the First Aid Kit of beach bags so you can spend more time playing beach blanket bingo with that babe on the chaise next to you and less time retrieving your lip balm.

1. Mar Y Sol Caracas Basket Tote, 2. Yves Saint Laurent Oversized Round Sunglasses, 3. Henri Bendel Wet Bikini Bag, 4. Jonathan Adler Stepped Diamonds Earbuds, 5. Beauty Buzz: Alternative Beauty

By |May 16th, 2013|Beauty Buzz|

There comes a time in everyone’s life where we may need to tighten the the ol’ metaphorial belt. It becomes a tough judgement call between a bottle of Whispering Angel on the rooftop of Soho House or that fancy facial serum. Decisions, decisions… When it comes to my beauty routine, I’m not one who likes to skimp on the essentials, however, when push comes to shove, there are a few luxury items that I’ve been able to swap out for their drugstore counterparts without sacrificing my standards. Below are a few products that I literally use on a daily basis and their pricier companions that I’ve had to trade in for the time being… and truth be told, I may not even switch back when my ship comes in.

Beauty Buzz: Five Product (and Minute) Face

By |May 9th, 2013|Beauty Buzz|

five minute makeupI mentioned before that less is more when it comes to cosmetics, but sadly the winter has a way of making you fall prey to caked on bronzer and and extra swipe of liner to make you feel like you look human.  And fall I did.  However, as the sun has started to shine again and my skin has begun to glow, I’m back to the bare bone basics.  I can not express to you enough how many (male) compliments I receive when I wear barely there makeup.  Groomed brows, berry stained lips and cheeks, and a healthy skin tone are the look that garners all the glances.  Five products and literally five minutes is all it takes to have you looking perfectly polished and oh so pretty.

1. Laura Geller Spackle Tinted Under Makeup Primer in Bronze, 2. Benefit Benetint, 3. Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in Ash Blonde, 4. Benefit They’re Real Mascara, 5. Josie Maran Argan Infinity Cream Intensive Creamy Oil

You’re welcome.

Beauty Buzz: Fifty Shades of… Tan

By |March 21st, 2013|Beauty Buzz|

self tanner before afterA couple of weekends ago as I sat across from my male companion, he commented how he missed the freckles that occupy my nose and cheeks during the summer months.  They are one of his favorite things about me, though I’m sure it was hard to choosel.  Funny enough, I miss them too.  As a little girl I tried my darndest to get rid of them.  I slathered on buttermilk, lemon juice, basically anything the women of classic literature did to keep their bosoms milky.  That’s when it occurred to me- I was starting to look like an extra from Twilight.  Should I even be out in daylight?

Rather than actually expose my skin to harmful UV rays, especially since recent studies have found that tanning beds are even more harmful than initially thought and a trip somewhere south isn’t currently in the cards (I only fly private) I needed to fake the flavor.  But man oh man, the stench of self tanner.  The streaky sometimes creamsicle results.  Maybe being Casper’s cousin isn’t so bad?  That’s when I was halfway through a spoon full of peanut butter and an episode of Nashville a commercial for Jergens new formula of gradual tanning lotion came on.  Now, not only did Jergens claim to give you a “natural glow” but it promised to do so without the telltale self tanner scent.  I was intrigued.

So, as soon as I mustered up enough energy to trot on over to Duane Reade, I picked up a tube to give it a go.  So, let’s just get right down to what I’m sure is the only part you actually care to know.  To call this “odorless” might be a bit of a stretch, HOWEVER, the the smell was far less offensive to the olfactories than previous formulas and other brands I’ve tried.  I actually would say it’s safe to wear in public and around other humans with senses of smell so long as you don’t take part in a heated dance off as that is sure to crank up the fragrance.  Just guessing, not speaking from personal experience…

As far as color goes, it’s what’s to be expected from a self tanner… though I only use this lotion every other day and am sure to follow up on ankles, knees, and elbows with a standard moisturizer so as to prevent creepy overly orange areas.  Bottom line?  This is a fantastic way to get you through the last few chilly weeks sans sun, unless, of course, you’ve got a private plane– in which case, can I come? Also, When you have a bad hair day due to greasy hair, read to know why it’s not hard to remove it from your hair.
