Why Did You Wear That: Cinco de Style

By |May 4th, 2011|Why Did You Wear That?|

Cinco de Mayo is another one of those holidays that Americans celebrate with no idea why.  They simply celebrate because it is yet another reason to drink heavily and eat delicious Mexican food.  I see nothing wrong with either of these two things, but I do think that we should probably figure out what it is that we’re actually celebrating.  Let’s see what Wikipedia has to say;

Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for “fifth of May”) is a holiday held on May 5. It is celebrated nationwide in the United States and regionally in Mexico, primarily in the state of Puebla. The date is observed in the United States as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride, and to commemorate the cause of freedom and democracy during the first years of the American Civil War. In the state of Puebla, the date is observed to commemorate the Mexican army’s unlikely victory overFrench forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín. Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day, the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico.

Alright, now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s get this party started.  For a holiday such a Cinco de Mayo, you have to go all in.  From the food to the drinks to the dress, it’s easy to get into the spirit.  Below are some awesome ways to bring a little bit of south of the border style to your celebration:

uno. Jen’s Pirate Booty Senorita Dress, $148, dos. Wendy Nichol Handknit Shawl, $350, tres. Nightcap Clothing Crochet Beach Pant, $190, quatro. Arden B. Crochet Trim Tube Romper, $49, cinco. All-American Swing Skirt, $14.80, seis. Love Sam Guaze Smock Top with Lace, $174, siete. Top Shop Red Flower Crochet Insert Dress, $70, ocho. Free People Mexican Embroidered Shift Dress, $168

Once you’ve got your outfit picked out, don’t forget to make up a big pitcher of sangria (my famous recipe here) and cook up some crowd pleasing enchiladas (recipe and last year’s fiesta video here).

Friday Frocks: Yeah Baby!

By |March 11th, 2011|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

It’s no secret that the runways have been channeling the swinging seventies and we’ve seen that flares are making a re-emergence.  With spring just around the corner, what better way to get into the spirit than with a flowy patterned frock?  I’m not talking about fembots and shooting bullets out of your brassiere.  I’m talking about flowing fabrics in psychedelic prints.

Top (L to R): Topshop Dandelion Print One Bell Sleeve Dress, $100, Betsey Johnson Winter Bouquet Burnout Chiffon Tunic, $278, Parker Double Flared Sleeve Dress, $220, Halston Heritage Tunic Mini Dress, $219 Bottom (L to R): Halston Heritage Metallic Pleated Deep V Dress, $395, Nightcap Clothing Priscilla Dress, $264, Winter Kate Devi Dress, $215, Voom by Joy Han Faire Bell Sleeve Off the Shoulder Dress, $195

These breezy dresses would look great paired with flat over the knee boots and a leather jacket until it’s warm enough to lose the boots and strap on some platform sandals.

Why Did You Wear That: Laced Up

Lace doesn’t always need to be associated with lingerie or your grandmother’s curtains. Lace is a super sexy element that can be brought into your wardrobe to give a little bit of girly sexy appeal. This particular trend looks great with leather to give that “sugar and spice” feel. Don’t deck yourself out head to toe. Instead, try mixing in a piece at a time.

Friday Frocks: Gold Diggers

By |September 17th, 2010|Friday Frocks|

I ain’t saying she’s a gold digger… Well, you know the rest. Something that caught my eye for Fall 2010 was the heavy use of gold and gold embellishment. One of my favorite shows of the season was Balmain. It was very gold heavy… I felt like I’d hit the jackpot. Speaking of jackpots, gold doesn’t necessarily have to be tacky (talking to you Atlantic City), it can be totally chic when done right. Here’s a glimpse at Balmain’s take on gold frocks and some ways to wear it yourself:
