Gift Guide: An R Rated Valentine’s Day

By |February 8th, 2012|Gift Guide|

no strings attached

There comes a time in a young lady’s life when she meets the man of her dreams (or at least so she thinks…).  When this glorious day finally dawns, it’s time to up the ante in the love department.  Whether he showers you with suggestive gifts or you purchase a little something sultry for yourself, it’s a win-win.  Because let’s be serious, any sort of sexy accoutrement is really a gift for him, right?  You don’t have to be a harlot to be a heartbreaker.  To be clear, sexy doesn’t have to be tacky.  So put back the feathered boa and the Reddi-Whip… there’s a better way.

Would You Wednesday: We Be Baldin’

By |January 25th, 2012|Why Did or Why Don't?|

bald cynthia nixonRecently, Cynthia Nixon (uh… Miranda on Sex and the City) revealed her newly shorn head.  She’s always sported a pretty short red ‘do (did you know she’s really a natural blonde?), but this new cut is not just short, it’s GONE.  Luckily, it’s not cause she went all Britney Spears on us.  She lost her locks for her current role in the Broadway play, Wit, where she plays a professor undergoing experimental cancer treatment.  Luckily, Cynthia happens to have a perfectly shaped head and the peachy smooth skin that can pull off this look.

She is not, however, the first leading lady to take it all off up top for a role.  No, not like the casting couch… Demi Moore, Natalie Portman, and Cate Blanchett are just a few of Hollywood’s beauties who have also gone bald (voluntarily).  Again, these women all happen to have the ideal domes to go without their hair.  I don’t know that I would be willing to give up my tresses just to play a part, but that probably has to do with my fear of an odd shaped head lying beneath my fine follicles.  Let’s just say not everyone has the ideal “bone structure” to go without.  So would you lose your locks for a big role?

Monday Mashup: Give Me Some Lip

By |January 16th, 2012|Monday Mashup, Red Carpet Recap|

Natalie Portman in custom Lanvin, Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace

Okay, let me just start off by saying that both Natalie and Angelina are two of the most beautiful women on the planet (let alone the red carpet), so this is, by no means, a personal attack or me “being a hater.” That said, I really disliked both of their gowns at last night’s Golden Globe Awards. While they both wore different colors, and slightly different necklines, they both had a little lip of red on their gowns. To me, these both look like bad Valentine’s Day cards, or perhaps boxes of cheap drugstore chocolates. Natalie is beyond petite and this dress is just too much for her tiny frame. I also love the mixing of pink and red (as shown here), but in this instance, it just does not work.

Speaking of tiny, Angelina has never looked more thin (not a compliment). I do not care for the matchy matchy or her “lip,” lips, bag, (and I assume shoes). To me, this dress does not look modern at all. It reminds me of something Aunt Gertrude once wore to a country club social. I applaud her for stepping out of her comfort zone, but hope that she does not get too comfortable in this zone either.

While my opinion is probably not popular with some of you (weird)… I hope at least a few of you are in agreement. So, I’m wondering, whose “lip” do you love?

Kiss off.

Why Can’t We Be Friends?

By |July 27th, 2011|Why Did or Why Don't?, Why Did You Date Him?|

Miss No Strings Attached in theaters back in January? No worries, you can catch it in theaters now… except this time it’s called Friends with Benefits – oh and they replaced Ashton and Natalie with Justin and Mila. No biggie. Not sure how exactly this slipped through the cracks with movie producers and studio heads, especially when all involved have worked so closely (Black Swan, That 70’s Show). You’d think at some point in between takes of the lesbian scene in Black Swan, Natalie might’ve mentioned something like, “You’re way better at this than Ashton. We’re doing a new movie together about these friends who have sex…”

And Mila would say, “No way!! JT and I are doing the same thing!”

Then they’d smack five and get back to business. Anyway, seeing that there are two major movies and four mega stars covering the sultry subject, I figured it must be something on the forefront of people’s minds. Just like the premise of the movies, having a “friend with benefits” (also known as a f*ck buddy), seems like a great idea in theory when in between relationships, but as everyone could guess (without having to sit through the movies or spend $15 a ticket) it never turns out quite the way you’d planned.

See it all gets a bit messy when one (if not both) catches stronger than “just friends” feelings. It’s nearly impossible for neither party to get attached when so much time is spent naked and in between the sheets. Sex is a very intimate thing and no matter how modern the woman (or man), sex is always more than just sex. I mean, let’s be serious, would you really sleep with someone you didn’t like… just a little? My verdict? Friends with benefits is always a bad idea.

Now, here’s the part where I bring it full circle by completely contradicting myself. I actually think the best relationships are built between people who have strong friendships. The trick is seamlessly transitioning from best buds to bed buds. The sexy part of relationships always fade (at least a little bit), but the sturdy foundation of friendship can keep a couple afloat.

So what do you think? Would you do the deed with a friend in need?

Whatever you decide, always be safe with your body and mind.

Why Did You Wear That: Red Hot Red Carpet

By |February 28th, 2011|Red Carpet Recap|

Without a doubt the color of the 2011 Academy Awards was fierce, fiery, red.  From the beautifully structured Vera Wang gown donned by the always stunning Sandra Bullock, to the incredibly minimal Calvin Klein sheath that Jennifer Lawrence slipped into, red was the color that stole the show.  These ladies prove that anyone can look stellar in red.  Whether you are a deep brunette or a sunny blonde, all you need to do is choose the right shade of crimson for you.

If you didn’t go for bold fire engine red, you might have picked something shimmery.  Metallics were still very strong on the red carpet for the Oscars.  One of my very favorites was the ethereal Monique Lhuillier gown worn by Mandy Moore. Also wearing a gauzy gown, was Halle Berry in Marchesa.  My only qualm with her is that same old hairdo.  Time for an update, girl.  Hailee Steinfeld also wore Marchesa (designed for her!) and looked absolutely adorable and age appropriate.  I think we have a future fashionista on our hands.

Two other lovely ladies who wore the metallic trend were Gwyneth Paltrow in Calvin Klein and Celine Dion in Armani Prive.  I must admit, my initial reaction to Gwyneth was “Ick!”  The more I looked at her and saw detail shots, the more I loved how simple and chic her sequin sheath was.  Celine picked a perfect Armani Prive option.  It’s hard to believe this woman just gave birth to twins!

One of the first dresses that I saw when tuning into the red carpet arrivals was Mila Kunis’s Elie Saab gown.  Although I was really nervous about her having a nip slip at any given moment, I already knew she was my best dressed for the evening.  I absolutely loved that shade of lavender on her (or really on anyone for that matter).  The dress was detailed and romantic without being fussy.  Another dress in this same hue, was Cate Blanchett’s Givenchy creation.  This was another dress that I despised upon first glance, but I have to say, the detailing on it was amazing and the color was perfect with her hair and makeup.  I also love the pop of citrusy yellow/green beading that carries over to the back. I think it’s the weird square sleeve’lettes that are throwing me off.

The next two dresses were quite controversial as I watched my Twitter feed this evening.  At first glance, I really like the way Amy Adams looks in her L’wren Scott sequined column dress.  There’s nothing prettier than a red head wearing navy blue.  However, her accessories were totally unnecessary.  She didn’t need them at all.  A lot of people were calling this “Jessica Rabbit gone wrong” but I think it was a really pretty look for her.  Marisa Tomei sported a vintage Charles James navy gown.  I really don’t like this dress.  Mostly because it just does not fit her.  It is totally ill fitted and it actually looks uncomfortable under her armpits.

I’m fairly certain everyone was waiting with bated breath to see what Natalie Portman would wear tonight.  She was a late arrival and some even thought she might not do the red carpet at all due to her impending pregnancy.  But alas, she arrived in Rodarte and looked absolutely flawless.  She appeared to be completely miserable during her interviews on the red carpet, but let’s just blame that on pregnancy hormones.  Another man’s fantasy woman who wore a similar shade was Scarlett Johansson.  As beautiful as she is, her Dolce and Gabbana reminded me of something you could have purchased from bebe circa 2002.  I also, am not digging her new ‘do whatsoever.  All I wanted to do was spritz her with some dry shampoo and run a brush through it not to mention the FUPA illusion it is giving her.

I can’t say that I was truly appalled by anyone’s outfit this evening, which is totally disappointing… well, except Mark Ruffalo’s wife’s bizarre extra arm appendage dress thingy. So who were you favorites on the red carpet?
