Setting the Mood: Working Girl

By |September 3rd, 2013|Setting the Mood|

Yesterday was Labor Day, which everyone seems to think means summer is over, but I have some news that may make your return to the cubicle slightly less depressing. The last day of summer actually isn’t until September 21st, so everyone, chill. You still have about three more weeks of summer to revel in even if your summer rental has expired. For some reason, September has a way of feeling like going back to school. Even though you’ve probably not had much more than a few Fridays off, returning to work today probably feels reminiscent of the first day of school. In that sense, it’s a good time to update your workday essentials with a tailored tote, classic pumps, chic spectacles, and the ultimate outfit topping blazer. Who’s the boss?

Why Did You Wear That: A Walk in the Park

By |July 30th, 2013|Personal Style, Why Did You Wear That?|

It’s a rare occasion that I make it above 14th Street.  Leaving downtown at times feels like leaving the country.  Well, my country.  I’m not actually a neighborhood snob (okay, maybe), but for me, there’s not much reason for me to head uptown.  I used to go for the sole purpose of re-blonding, but then my hairstylist left the country… and I stopped coloring my hair.  Some even say your ears may pop when you cross 42nd Street. Whatever the case may be, I don’t make it up to the Upper West Side or the park very often.

I can’t decide if I gave up on Central Park after I realized there were about 3cm of park where Smitty was actually allowed to be or that time we got pelted by a football courtesy of a group of guys trying to catch our attention.  Speaking of which, a guy once asked me on a date to Central Park.  I never called him back.  Even my best friends have a tough time coercing me to the Upper West Side.  Given enough wine, I’ve found myself sleeping on their couch in the morning, pleased with myself for having passed out before the pizza arrived.  So, when my newly Americanized pal, suggested we head uptown and check out the park, I felt I had to oblige.  I suffered through a steamy subway ride and was soon reminded what a wonderful oasis we have in our otherwise concrete desert.kirsten smith nyc

Girl Crush: Go-Go-Gomez

By |May 15th, 2013|Celebrity Style|

selena gomez fashionOnce a wizard of Waverly Place, Selena Gomez has ditched her Disney darling act as most recently showcased in the raunchy film, Spring Breakers.  Sure she caught a temporary case of Bieber fever, but it seems Ms. Gomez is growing up and moving on.  It’s alright, girl.  We’ve all made mistakes.  If we looked back at at my boyfriend at twenty, I’d be a little red faced too.  Along with her dating and career choices, her style is also evolving and with her glossy locks, long legs, and girl next door (in your dreams) looks, she’s setting herself up to be a real red carpet darling.  Not one to shy away from a bikini or midriff baring top (clearly, she spent two hours on the big screen in not much else), Gomez has captured the perfect mix between young woman and youthful age appropriateness- unlike some of her tween trainwreck graduates.  To get Gomez’s enviable style, grab some key pieces below and start doing some sit ups, like right now.

1. Vince Leather Hi Lo Tee, 2. Jimmy Choo Anouk Patent Leather Shoes, 3. bumble and bumble Shine On Finishing Spray, 4. Smith’s Rosebud Salve, 5. Olay Complete Defense Daily UV Moisturizer SPF 30, 6. Why Did You Wear That: Short Stop

By |May 14th, 2013|Why Did You Wear That?|

women wearing shortsEven though summer has been playing hard to get this year, it’s just about time to retire the jeans and trade them in for short shorts.  Hey, you haven’t been sweating to the oldies for nothing.  Might as well cash in on that gym membership.  Those toned stems aren’t any kind of coincidence and it would be totally selfish not to share them with the world.  Enter Cult of Individuality who has made it their business to make a statement out of your bottoms…

Sometimes to bring a bit flare to your wardrobe, it’s best to start from the bottom.  Printed and destroyed denim is a great way to bring interest to your look.  You may think that shorts are simply meant for a casual daytime look, but check out how to style shorts for any kind of occasion- from day to night.
