Friday Frocks: Jump At the Chance

By |July 18th, 2014|Friday Frocks, Why Did You Wear That?|

jumping jumpsuit whydidTechnically not a frocks… because, well, they’re not dresses, jumpsuits are panted versions of the maxi dress.  A jumpsuit can be both casual and comfortable as well as silky and sleek.  Whether you opt for uptown or down, just fair warning: it’s going to be a struggle in the bathroom.  Allow for extra time and be prepared for angry, full bladdered women to anxiously sigh while repeatedly interrupting your bathroom break with angry knocks as you try to free yourself from straps, belts, and other accoutrements.  That aside, jumpsuits are kind of like wearing very stylish onesie pajamas out in public without attracting public scrutiny, plus you don’t need to bother shaving.  Jump at the chance to wear one this weekend.

Why Did You Wear That: Let’s Keep This Private

By |December 24th, 2013|Why Did You Wear That?|

plaid fashion girlAs mad for plaid as I am?  So are Hedi Slimane of Saint Laurent, Rossella Jardini of Moschino, and Mr. Lagerfeld himself. But if you tossed that old school uniform or it doesn’t quite fit the way it did as a teen, do not fret.  Perhaps it’s time to be the teacher rather than the pupil and there are some very grown up ways to add plaid that are more collegiate than kindergarten.  Let me school you for a moment.  Pop a varsity jacket on with distressed denim and pumps, add a plaid jumper over a turtleneck, or polish off those penny loafers- but never forget your over the knee socks.  (Pro-tip: for cooler climates, layer over the knee socks atop sheer stockings in the same shade or patterned color family).  Pick a piece or two to achieve the look, but don’t go for extra credit by overdoing it.  You should look subtly nostalgic, not like you just stepped out of a time machine.

Gift Guide: Oh, Man. Another Gift Guide.

By |December 13th, 2013|Gift Guide|

christmas male modelsIt is with great relief that the only men in my life that I have to worry about this holiday season are my brothers, my father, Smitty, and a handful of guy friends (by handful, I mean like three).  Luckily for me, most of them will be perfectly content with a simple well wish and maybe a bottle of Fireball (talking to you, Andy Smith).  And it’s a good thing I am single this year, because not only would I not be able to afford a thing after Smitty’s most recent trip to the vet (more on that later), but it would appear by my selections below that I’d be dating a cross between Don Draper and Al Borland… which actually would be an upgrade from some of my exes who probably would have been happy with hand mirrors, toy helicopters, and a vat of Scotch large enough to drown in. gifts for men

Gift Guide: My Kinda Girl

By |December 11th, 2013|Gift Guide|

paper dollTraditionally, I’ve divided up my gift guides by price point, but I decided to shake things up this year by organizing by personality.  Now, there is no way on Earth anyone could possibly classify all women into five categories- unless that person was looking to face several million pissed off estrogen fueled females.  However, I’ve chosen five pretty broad categories that should be fairly helpful when shopping for your friends, sisters, mothers, and significant others.  Whether she loves all things shiny or her fingers can’t be pried from her smartphone, there’s something here for just about any woman.  And since I’ve taken all of the grunt work out of your holiday shopping (you’re welcome), all you’ve got to do is figure out what kind of gal you’re shopping for.  (If you can’t do that, I can’t be held accountable- but a helpful hint?  We’ve all probably got a little bit of each one inside of us).

Setting the Mood: Playing the Field

By |July 22nd, 2013|Setting the Mood|

athletic editorialI’m not even going to pretend I like sports.  I am not the girl you’re going to see at a bar cringing her way through a beer wearing her “team’s” jersey shouting profanities at the referee’s calls.  I’m just not.  The only “sport” I played in highschool was tennis and I was terrible at that.  Oh, and there was that one time I thought running track would be fun.  It wasn’t.  However, I can get down with the athletic look.  Way chicer than Umbros and far more pulled together than sweats, designers have put their own spin on sports.  The varsity jacket has been reinvented and you don’t even have to date the quarterback to score your own.  Track pants and shorts that are acceptable to wear well past practice.  Sneakers and a Slimane jersey will have you rooting for the home team.

J. Crew Leather Sleeved Denim Varsity Jacket, Le Plus Dores Team Slimane Jersey, Tibi Spectator Silk Crepe de Chine Track Pants, Supra Skytop Triangle Plus Sneakers

Get in the game.
